  • As a fellow practioner i just don't think these are the greatest sweeping techniques though quite effective.

  • if you have good control of that left wrist you could just swing your right foot over for a triangle

  • Just had my first lesson today (No gi). It was awsome. I do muay thai and bjj and will be doing cage wrestling in a week....

  • you can finish with an armbar instead of going to mount hook your leg around his head and other over sit on his chest and straight up armbar

  • Sick vid

  • Almost every video I go to has someone insulting the other. But why?

Let people say what they want,

you wouldn't know if it's true,

and you wouldn't know if it's false either.

You don't just assume if it sounds too good to be true, it's gonna be BS.

  • that is so sick. i got into a fight with a jackass from my school last night (it was self defense on my part. he started all of it and threw the first punch) and he thought he was tough shit. well, he's not so tough when he picks a fight with a kid who is a 3 times silver glove boxer and has been taking BJJ for 6 years. i ducked under his punch and came up on his side and threw him to the ground with a hip toss, then putting him into an arm bar until he gave up because of the pain. pussy.

  • @bearsfan213 That is the most retarded story I ever heard, go back to playing world of warcraft.

  • @nezzard Since this is youtube, I'm not going to even bother argueing. By the way, world of warcraft = gay as shit

  • @bearsfan213 wow's not gay? what in wow references it is gay :P

  • @nezzard lmao, im sure he's a 3 times silver glove level 37 dwarf wizard on WOW aswell.

  • @bearsfan213 DUDE OMG you are sooooo cool

  • @bearsfan213 i dont see why people are posting anything bad about y6ur story since the same thing happens to me at school, i make sure people who act like jerks get what they deserve all the while doing it with self defense, since they hit first, like i said people who are hating on you dont know how good it feels to teach someone a lesson

  • @bearsfan213

    lol sure buddy :)

  • @bearsfan213 youre a faggot

  • @bearsfan213 Nice movie.

  • @bearsfan213 cool story bro

  • @bearsfan213 true story

  • ive started BJJ a month ago. this sweep is beautiful!! i cant wait to try it

  • sick sweep. :>

  • Cool, a scissor sweep from spider guard. Thank youl.

  • The best sweep ever is the. . .FAN SWEEP! So explosive, so fun, and of course, who doesn't like going from guard to mount like THAT!

  • takes too long to do

  • @blink180heights then your not doing it right........ go to "louie pac sub" and watch the first video...... perfect example of this sweep in effect

  • i'm 5'4 and about 125 lbs. my gi is a 3. is that too big for me? it feels too big, but the guy at the store said it's good because the length of the sleeves are not too short, but the gi was made for 156 lbs. should i machine wash it?

  • what does gi mean

  • @kylelax2 judogi, karategi, keikogi, gi is the word in japanese for clothes. So makes clothes for judo, clothes for karate, etc..

  • This a beautiful sweep, I use this all the time, De La Riva showed it as an option when they flare the knee to avoid the DLR hook.

"a good guard passing grappler knows not to stand up to pass"

I have to STRONGLY disagree with this. In high level jiu-jitsu competition almost everyone stands up to open the guard, Roger Gracie, Marcelo Garcia, Jacare, etc. They may go low and pass after the guard is open, but to open a closed guard, they almost always stand up to put gravity on their side.

  • Couldn't this be used even if the guy trying to pass the guard didn't drop back to the mat?

  • my only problem is a good guard passing grappeler knows not to stand up to pass. but still nice sweep

  • you are right

  • But he is standing to open the guard isn't he?

  • everyone stands up to pass, its actually the best way to pass, i play a pressure game. so stand up , if put have to put my weight on anything , it will be my opponent. not on my knees.

  • RIP RONNY!!!!

  • i have remarked here there´s a perfect momentum to do also a bicep slicer!!!! great-basic-perfectly-done sweep!!

  • thanks god i found a video in wich i read intelligent comments on u2be.....

  • I used to think that Fabio Gurgel was a genius but then I noticed how fundamental all of his movements are its ABC jiu jitsu perfect base proper technique great strategy you know what I still think he's a genius

  • I guess thats the secret of the best of the best. Basic technique brought close to perfection.

  • yup his fundamentals provide the technically solid jiu jitsu that students such as demian maia posess. all of his teaching is very useful.

  • do you know what the deal is between him and Marcelino

  • he is marcelinhos trainer, his master.

  • woow youve got a whole range of stuff there, if he bases out on the sweep then you can triangle, if he sprawls on your leg you can scissor sweep, if that doesnt work, you can grab his belt and throw him the other way!

  • this move does work pretty damn good for me with no gi...u just have to be a step quicker than the other guy...they fear the triangle more than the sweep...so it makes it a lot easier...

  • the first sweep is extremely usefull if fighting another trained opponent in a cage, or practicing jiu jitsue, etc. however, i would not attempt it at all in any kind of street fight. another trained BJJ fighter will drop down to pass guard. a kid beating ur ass will not sit down unless hes on ur chest, hell prolly ust walk around u. i would just upkick like a bitch until u can get up lol.

  • You"re right but one great sweep for the street is a Spider Guard sweep with both feet in the biceps when he put weights on you ( not at advanced grappler of course) then you lift him and throw him to the side. Great video, Fabio is the man.

  • You dont understand,In the early stages of BJJ,These were all used in Street fights, the Gracies would fight,in the street or dirt, bloody fights, they were wild kids ,but they didnt live in the best place in brazil. Look up Gracie storys,2 of the gracies talk about these street fights. Dont try to suggest anything, you arent anyone in the fighting world,BJJ is street effective, just shut up with your over used arguement about How BJJ isnt street effective. BJJ For Ever!

  • but the gracie's will tell you bjj and gracie jiujitsu are not the same thing. the sport version had become so far removed from self defense it's not funny.

  • Second technique is impressive. As far as the first one is concerned there is no guarantee that opponent will act according to your wish. In Robert Drysdale Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Academy, I am getting bjj training under Robert Drysdale, bjj world champion. Visit his official website, RobertDrysdale. Net to watch bjj videos.

  • there is a sweet triangle set up there too.

    nice sweep!

  • is this possible or still effective in no-gi? im guessing you can hold his wrists or something?

  • I was wondering that myself, cause in nogi I would imagine it'd be much harder against bigger guys because they could easily break your wrist control

  • i also was about to ask the same question until i decided to read some of the comments first. After a month no one has responded with an opinion? Guess that means i'll just have to try it out for myself...

  • This could work in no-gi quite easily. You're right, grab the wrists, you're placement alongside his hip and knee is the important part of this. If you have the foot in his knee, you can use any joint on the other side of his body to rotate him.

  • Thank you

  • wow all that took like 3 seconds looks very useful!

  • Great sweep, very useful.

  • Most people would say shit to you, but I am just going to ask if you know what BJJ is..??

  • It just depends on what you want to do. If you are just trying rubber guard stuff then of course you dont need a gi, but in general it will help your game a lot to train with the gi and it's more realistic for street fighting too. Most people wear shirts or sweaters in reality. If you are doing just m.m.a then it just depends on what you want to do. Essentially though stick with the gi.

  • you can also easily put your opponent into a triangle when he drops to his knees to try to pass

  • nicely done

  • because if you stay standing your in total control of his spider guard

  • why should he be dropped on hes knee after passing the guard?

  • If you throw that leg up to his bicep, he cant go over it, he's going to drop and try to shoot under. If you're leg comes off of his arm in that process, he'll at least pull half-guard, or duck under and catch a side mount. If he's got a ground game, that is.

  • helpful one

  • looks cool

  • I am two months in, and this video is excellent. Thank you.

  • correct me if i'm wrong but i believe you can also put the top knee in the stomach then do your scissor

  • are you kidding?

  • A Gi is similar to clothing and trains you how to use and defend the grips clothing affords, and you can Gi choke someone wearing a light jacket (for instance the U.S. army ACU uniform top) . It also has the other purposes GHRepresent listed.

  • Jesus! A gi is like clothing, you can chocked out by using the opponets collar which happens to be pretty well stiched together by the way.

  • BJJ is sweeping America. and the world. I suggest us who began better keep with it and train hard, befor it gets corrupted lol like,Karate(ESPECIALY KARATE),TKD,Kungfu.

  • if it gets corrupted go do Judo, Kosen rules ....

  • I know it is not the goal in this video...taht you just want to sweep the guy...but why not go for a Sankuku(triangle choke for mma people)instead of sweeping? still a good technique

  • shut the fuck up, what do u know, go for triangle. we want to like u are some grappling genious. this is fabio gurgel, u can't tell him nothing. wanna be smart ass

  • GH u have to stop beeing on the defensive buddy (and learn what you talk about). This is not fucking grapling so don't mix your stuf wanabe smart. second, I haven't said that he cannot do sankuku or that he doesn't know the technique. It's just another technique and he knows it. Like I said it's just that Sankuku wasn't the goal of the video. It'S good to have many techniques to do in diffrent situation since some people resis more on some type of technique. Go on and ask him if am wrong dumass

  • its Sangaku, not sankuku lol i think sankuku might be some kind of bird...

  • Sangaku are Japanese geometrical puzzles in Euclidean geometry on wooden tablets created during the Edo period (1603-1867)

    Definition from wikipedia

a lot of people write it Sankaku it is a fact, but on my Jiujitsu program, it is written Sankuku I am 100% positive on that.

also, At the time, there was no reference material with which to verify the correct spelling of any Japanese words translated into English

  • ah ok. Im just going off of jigoro kanos kodokan and another judo book, I forget the name of it though. I think its similar to the spelling of ju jitsu, which is ju jutsu, ju jitsu, or jiu jitsu. people think its either because of just translation differences or different pronunciation abilities. Nice to have learned :)

  • it was a pleasure to help :)

  • It is pronounced sankaku. (さんかくー三角)

  • i saw two methods in this video, one where the opponent stands, the second which can be done if he doesnt stand. i noticed in the second sweep, it is necessary to create clearance between yourself and the opponent. Is that always necessary in a sweep which is performed on the ground?

  • Gi or no gi, I can do the same thing with a gi as I can a shirt collar. Gi sleeves aren't needed either. Infact, if you have a good instructor, they teach for gi and no gi.

I can take a wife beater, and do the same thing as i would with a gi.

  • Very nice sweep. Like it.

  • gi helps u understand leverage better, and u explode without the gi

  • @phaze88 So true

  • i agree, in any type of competition or street fight other that jiu jitsu what are the odds your opponent will be wearing a gi...not to metion it could be used against you just as well, why take the fuckin' chance?

  • Do you Know why BJJ guys use a GI ? Its a tool. People use clothing in public

GI = Clothing. Open your mind .

  • I know why they use a gi! I see how you can compare clothing with a gi, however i don't see it as effective in my opinion!

  • gi does give u better grip and more options but if u work on ur grip and practice submissions u can use with or without a gi u should be fine, and usually clothing is a poor substitute for a gi cuz it folds and bends easier cuz its softer

  • GI does not= clothing. trainig with the gi help you develop those smooth and easy transition flow from position to position. u probabaly know that traiing with the gi restricts your movement a lot. so once it is taking off, u move a hell lot better. and that is what the gi does to u. and that is why i love it.

  • actually when japs started, a gi was actually their clothes. like they would train in their every day clothing. then they started using uniforms it was based on their own clothing, but it just meant that they didnt rip their good clothes. Its like us training in jeans and a t-shirt. The gi is just a tradition that is based on actual clothing lol, it may help but it is just supposed to be clothing... because thats what it is

  • it might be just clothing but is sure helps improve your all around game. tell me why all the abu dhabi champions are top gi competitors. I haven't seen any pure wresler do well in abu dhabi. the GI is the real jiujitsu. so ppl should start respecting it. even eddie bravo who claims all the no-gi stuff trained came up on the gi.

  • No no dont get me wrong i know the importance and benefits of using the gi and i totally agree with what u think, but the gi is only supposed to be durable old fashioned japanese clothing, all the benefits are secondary to that fact. Like u dont wear the gi because u know it benefits you, the gi is worn because its tradition within ju jitsu. the benefits just happen to come with it. I love the gi for pulling ur opponent around while striking them, it adds a bit or realism i think

  • So.....you're a cock and have no understanding of martial arts yeah?

  • I like how they threw in the Cypress Hill beat at the end lol

    Nice move!

  • good basic!!! thanx
