@karlothesexy5 You have to press volume up and power simultaneously (I just updated the description). If that's not the problem, try watching that part of the video again. I didn't cut anything out of the video, so it should all be there.
If you don't have the T-mobile version of the Nexus S, then it's possible that your phone has a different update method. Sprint, Telus and Koodo won't update with my video.
If other viewers have seen this problem, please help.
@overcat2001 Thanks a lot for replying, I actually had to hold volume up and press power to get to the menu.. I actually start installing but in the middle of the instalation it stops and I get an error message: "assert failed: file_getprop("/system/build.prop" , "ro.build.fingerprint) == "google/soju/crespo:4.0.3/IML74K/239410:user/release-keys"
E:Error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip (Status 7) Installation aborted
@dp3009 You have to be on 2.3.6 for this update to work. "ceskapavlo" wrote a comment that it failed when he tried updating from 2.3.4, but that it worked after he first updated to 2.3.6.
I don't know if there's an update directly from 2.3.3 to 2.3.6. I think I did 2.3.3 to 2.3.4, then 2.3.4 to 2.3.6, then 2.3.6 to 4.0.3.
I think 2.3.5 was only for the Nexus S 4G phone. If you have a Nexus S 4G phone, this update video won't work for you.
@rulingmedal2 There are different versions of the Nexus S phone. I have the T-mobile version. The Sprint Nexus S 4G has a different network chip, and it requires a different firmware. The message you have means that the firmware isn't compatible with your version of the Nexus S.
The good news is that all (???) of the Nexus S phones will be getting Ice Cream Sandwich; the bad news is that my video won't work for your specific model.
It works for Wind and Mobilicity, fails for Telus and Koodo
@shahwali11 Make sure you are on 2.3.6 firmware before trying. I only have the T-mobile version, but people have written comments to say that it works for: US T-mobile, Canadian Wind, Canadian Mobilicity.
It fails for US Sprint, Canadian Telus, Canadian Koodo.
Many have written comments to say that it worked in certain countries, but I don't know whether there are multiple versions of the Nexus S where they live.
@FunnyFanatic1 This won't work on the Sprint 4G phone. You have a different network chip. The firmware is for a T-mobile Nexus S and a few other Nexus S models, but not for the 4G ones. I mentioned this in the description and in some comments.
The Sprint 4G firmware should be out soon, if it's not out already. Good luck.
I tried to update my Canadian Koodo Nexus S. Every thing looks okay but when it starts to update from the SD card, I got this error msg... E:failed to verify whole file signature... Any tips. The video was very helpful, Thanx
@agya05 Sorry, this firmware won't work for the Canadian Koodo Nexus S. The error message is Android's way of saying that the firmware is not compatible. The procedure in the video should be the same for your phone, but you'll have to find the right firmware. I only have the T-mobile Nexus S, so I won't be able to help you with your search. Good luck.
@HTCXLAndroid This firmware definitely won't work on your HTC XL phone. It's specific to only certain hardware versions of the Google Nexus S. It won't even work on the Sprint version of the Nexus S, because it uses a different network chip.
I don't know anything about your phone, and I don't use YM. You need to find someone with your phone. Keep googling....
@Daarkknees Thanks for letting me know about the Telus. I'll update the description. Also, I'm glad you liked the video. It's too bad it didn't work for you.
@MegaMiravi I don't know how to downgrade. Did you get your phone updated to ICS? If so, what problems are you having? Eventually all of the Nexus S phones will be getting the ICS update through Over-The-Air, so it would be good to know what the problems are.
If anyone has information on downgrading the Nexus S firmware, please post a comment for MegaMiravi.
@overcat2001 yes, i have ICS there are not too many problems but ICS is for galaxy nexus (2 cores and processor 1.5Ghz) so there are lags, and battery live is worse too and i cant launch some of games
@MegaMiravi I haven't noticed the lags, but I don't play anything that really pushes the performance limits (mostly backgammon). My battery life does seem worse now. I thought this was because I was using it much more, but it's probably also due to ICS.
Unfortunately, I don't have the information for you to downgrade, but I'll update the description so that others consider the possible performance and battery-life issues.
As for the games that don't launch, leave a note for the developers.
@overcat2001 ok,thanks but in ICS are lags, and some games cant be launched, but it's the newest system and it just amaizing!! so i dont know if i want to downgrade or not, but i want root. and i dont want manully root. i want a program. but i dont know root program for ICS. you know?
@MegaMiravi I haven't rooted my phone, but someone on xda-developers has a program that might work. Search the web for "guide root access and cmw recovery in stock ics rom". They use the same ICS firmware, so it should work. Of course, use at your own risk, and let us know your results if you try it. Be sure to backup everything just in case.
If the list is short, it would be nice to know which games don't currently launch under ICS.
im from canada, and im using Nexus S ( V- 2.3.4 ), Baseband version - I9020XXKD1
and my carrier name is Mobilicity.
my question is that, if im upgrade 2.3.4 to 4.0.3 is that have any problem after upgrade. my carrier , my data, my 3G , my wifi , my camera works well after upgrade...?
@Nitun89 When I updated my T-mobile from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6, I had random reboots every few days. I ended up doing a hard reset. It fixed the problems, but I had to reinstall my apps. I'm not comfortable linking to that update.
There seems to be a site "mobilesyrup" that has a lot of information for Canadian users. They may have the update, or at least you can leave a comment and get better info from someone who knows the Mobilicity Nexus S.
@Devilhunter110 The safest update is to wait for the Over-The-Air update to be pushed to your phone. Ice Cream Sandwich has some nice new features, but Gingerbread worked fine too. Once you update, it will be hard to go back (I don't know how).
This update is just a manual version of the OTA update for the T-mobile Nexus S running 2.3.6. If you have a different phone or a different version of Android, then this update probably won't work. Based on comments, it does work on some others.
I have the Nexus S with Sprint, I currently use Android version 2.3.7, If I update to version 4.0 will I loose everything on my phone? And I mean text messages, pictures, music, downloaded apps etc? Is the 4.0 version even available for the Nexus S Sprint?
@z0iiNkS The firmware in this video won't work for you.
I didn't lose files or apps when I went from 2.3.6 to 4.0.3. However, you should definitely backup everything before updating (when firmware becomes available). I had a problem when updating from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6 (phone had random problems). When I did a hard reset, it deleted my apps, and only the paid apps were restored. Fortunately, I had backed up all apps with Astro File Manager. I don't remember whether music and other files
@z0iiNkS (continued) were deleted, but I would copy them to a PC before updating.
I believe there was a leaked version of Android 4 for the Sprint 4G, so an official version should be coming soon. It may have already been released, but I only have the T-mobile Nexus S. (Two ears, but just one phone...)
By the way, the hard reset fixed the random problems I was having in 2.3.6 (for those who found this comment by googling).
@BOMBAY32d I don't know. For the U.S. phones, I think 2.3.7 was only available for the Sprint 4G version. If you have a 4G phone, this update won't work.
Please look for confirmation that it works before updating; I would hate to have you mess up your phone (and you'd hate it too).
If, in spite of these warnings, you try the update, let us know whether it works and which model of Nexus S you have.
@sparclesing It won't work on the Gravity Smart, and I don't know when or if you'll get ICS. It looks like a nice phone with the sliding keyboard. I sometimes wish the Nexus S had a physical keyboard.
It doesnt work for Samsung Google Nexus S 2.3.4, but I manualy update it to 2.3.6, then I followed this GREAT video and guess what. My phone is on 4.0.3 now THANK YOU
@ceskapavlo You're welcome. You should try Chrome Beta browser from the Android Market. It doesn't do Adobe Flash, but it is much faster than the standard browser. The more I use it, the more I like it. Chrome Beta still has some bugs, but it's great!
Please, can this work for Samsung Google Nexus S, with 2.3.4 Android version? I tried to update it in settings, but it sais my sys. is up to date. Thanks
@SY1WEK If you have a T-mobile Nexus S running Android 2.3.6, you'll see that this is a magic trick that you can do at home - no mirrors, rabbits or trick cards required.
The only magic was the use of iMovie to speed up the slow parts of the video. ;-)
@JeanyBravo No. It won't work for the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE. You'll get the ICS update eventually, but it won't be from me. I just have the "old" T-mobile Nexus S.
The French carrier SFR announced that ICS would be coming to the Galaxy S2 in March, so you may not have to wait long.
thanks much! do you know if North American and UK or EU release dates for software are the same or probably need to search for a torrent upload directly to my phone and manually update it?
@JeanyBravo From what I have seen for my phone (Nexus S), the release dates for the phone and for software updates have been different in the U.S. and France. Even the Nexus S models in the U.S. (AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile) have different updates, because the Sprint has a different network chip and officially supports Google Wallet.
Be careful to get the right update for your exact model of phone. The Nexus S seems to check that the firmware is correct before updating, but maybe not others.
@overcat2001 NOTE: I can't guarantee that all Nexus S models verify the update before installing. Also, if you have root access, you can probably override these checks (which would be bad).
@ashstikler This is a much more complicated procedure. Search for "downgrade android firmware" if you really need to do this. I have never downgraded, so I wouldn't be much help to you.
Older apps are being optimized for Ice Cream Sandwich. Also, Google just released Chrome Beta only for phones running ICS. Chrome is faster and better then the "Browser" in every other version. You can find Chrome Beta on the Android Market. To me, it's worth getting ICS just for Chrome.
@overcat2001 It would be helpful for others to know what is wrong with ICS. Could you tell us what doesn't work under ICS? I don't have many paid apps (SlingPlayer, Documents To Go, Endomondo, Hungry Shark 3, Backgammon, Cut the Rope, Apparatus, Jenga, The Sims 3, Doodle Jump, X Construction, Flight Control), but they all work. My free apps all work too.
*** Be sure to back up your apps (I use Astro File Manager) and any data before trying to install old firmware.***
@adrian5223 It will definitely NOT work on the Galaxy Y. This update only works on some versions of the Samsung Google Nexus S.
I don't know what's planned in terms of updates for the Galaxy Y, so you'll have to keep searching. There may be a custom port of ICS available, but I don't have any information, and I personally stick to official firmware.
@aGhettoTwinky "cmcolumbianSh" said that for Canadian phones, it will only work for the Wind and Mobilicity AWS versions of the Nexus S. I won't have any other firmware here, because I just have the U.S. T-mobile version. Good luck in your search.
@TheThrillero There have been nearly 700 views from the U.K. Which version (carrier) of the Nexus S do you have? Maybe someone has already tried it and can say whether it works.
If you do use the update, make sure you are at Android version 2.3.6 before updating. Also, don't bother rooting your phone; this is official firmware. It's for the T-mobile U.S. phone, but it has worked on some other versions.
Did this update last week and my phone (GT-I9020XX) has been a lot more fun to play with, much quicker/smoother, the wifi signal seems better, connection to the actual cellular network has improved a lot compared to that of the 2.3.6 version (for me anyways), oh and the battery life is just awesome! if i just check the time, do a few texts and light web browsing, my bat will just drain at about 2.5%/hr as apposed to ~4%/hr before.
I highly recommended if you are running 2.3.6 stock Google ROM!
For those of you with the Sprint 4G or other Nexus S versions not supported by this update: If you do find an official update for your phone, it would be great to make your own video and post a link in the comments. You'll make a lot of people happy.
@ISAVEGAMES3 No. Keep googling, or wait for the over-the-air update. I don't think the AT&T update is available yet. When it does arrive, it won't be on my YouTube channel. I have the T-mobile version.
it does not work for me. When I go to recovery mode it freezes on the google logo, and beneath it is an open padlock. Also when I boot my nexus with the volume up and the power button it says lock state : unlocked. What should I do?
@jellevdvliet I think that "lock state : unlocked" means you have a "rooted" phone. Someone left a comment to say that this update worked for them, but it really depends on your specific Nexus S model. There are actually a few different models (see Wikipedia).
I have the T-mobile version. Leave a comment with your model, and maybe someone else has done the update and can help you. Otherwise, wait for the over-the-air update.
There are some hacking websites that deal with rooted phones.
If you have a rooted phone, you can also install custom firmware, but I don't do this, and I don't have any information about it. The update in this video is an official T-mobile/Google firmware update.
@overcat2001 Actually, as it turned out, the ICS I installed with the help of your video was extremely slow, and I went through many hours of turmoil searching up websites that might help me downgrade it back to Gingerbread. I ended up carrying out a solution where I would root my phone and then unroot it back to Gingerbread, but once I finished the rooting step, I ended up with a very smooth ICS so I figure I will leave it rooted as is, and now I'm happy. :)
@plattawabbe Thanks for the feedback. Yours is the first comment that mentions this problem of speed. So if I understand, you're using the ICS firmware from the video, but you rooted your phone after the update.
I'm guessing that you don't have the T-mobile version of the phone? It would be helpful for others if you could leave a comment with your phone version / country.
I didn't see a noticeable change in speed, other than the web browser being little faster in ICS.
@Thorpod I'm glad it worked for you. I'll update the description.
You don't have the Sprint version. Sprint is one of the American telephone companies. Sprint uses a different network, so their version of the Nexus S has a different network chip. Google (or Sprint) decided to make a separate firmware for this phone.
@ZoCarolinaBread The androidauthority website claims that Android 4.0.4 firmware for the Sprint Nexus S 4G has been leaked and that an over-the-air update should be coming very soon.
@Mzkaymae99 It won't work on the Sprint version of the Nexus S. I noted this in the description. Unfortunately, you'll have to wait for the Sprint 4G firmware update, which should be coming soon (I won't have this).
@cabooseiscrazy I think this means that this update isn't compatible with your version of the Nexus S. I googled your error message and found a posting on androidpolice that mentioned problems with Canadian phones. Be patient, and your provider will push an ICS (hopefully) soon.
Could you leave a comment with the name of your service provider so others don't waste their time? I have comments asking about the Koodo and Fido versions.
@SanitariumZone I don't know. So far, there have been only nine views (including yours) from Finland, so you may want to search the Internet again before trying this. Has anyone from Finland tried this update? (keywords: suomi, matkapuhelin)
@bluearmy4life Look at my reply to MegaMiravi. It could be that your phone model isn't supported, or it could be that you are not currently on Android version 2.3.6. If it still doesn't work, you'll have to wait for the Over the Air update. I believe Google has said that all Nexus S models will eventually get the update.
@overcat2001 It's a Nexus S running on 2.3.4 instead of 2.3.6 Could this be the problem? Do I have to download 2.3.6 before doing this ?And if it still doesn't work: When Will Google send me the update? Thx :D
@bluearmy4life If your error message mentions 2.3.6, then I would try to update to that version first. I only have one phone, and it was at 2.3.6 before I updated. I had udated to 2.3.6 a couple of months before, so I don't know whether that's your problem.
As to the date of the OTA update, I don't know. I'm surprised that Google didn't force the carriers to update at the same time. There's no custom junk ("improvements") on the Nexus S, so we shouldn't have to wait.
@MrNikolaKovacevic You're welcome. If you didn't have the T-mobile version, please note your version so that others will know it will work on theirs. Thanks.
@overcat2001 I have network free phone, I bought it while i was in Austria, and I'm using it in Serbia. It works normal, so i guess it would on all the phones that are not bought on contract. And I also heard that it can't be upgraded from 2.3.2.
Only thing wrong that I noticed is that sometimes it shows a message like yours but it says "Unfortinately Google+ has stopped" but the app is working normally... Have you figured out what is that?
I had another small problem, whenever i got a call from a phone number that hasn't been entered with area code (+381) he wouldn't recognize it, and would show only the number, not the name from phonebook, but he showed them corectly once I added it ;)
@MrNikolaKovacevic I haven't had that problem with Google+. I did have that message a couple of times with "My Way" (Paris airports app). My Way was running all of the time in the background, so I uninstalled it.
@legamania It will only work on the Samsung Google Nexus S, and only on certain versions. It is the official release for the U.S. T-mobile version of the Nexus S. You should be at Android version 2.3.6 before applying the update (Other people have videos or web pages to do this). You don't have to "root" your phone to apply this update.
Based on comments, it seems to work on some versions of the Nexus S, but NOT the Sprint 4G version.
If you wait, they will push an update to your phone.
@LuciY1000 No. The video camera shoots in 4:3 format, 720x480 pixels, 3 Mbps in .MP4 file format. New stuff: Time lapse mode of 1-10 sec/image, Effects (Squeeze, Big eyes, Big mouth, Small mouth, Big nose, Small eyes).
Now there's an app called "Movie Studio" for editing, but I haven't tried it.
The still camera now has a panorama mode for taking very wide photos
Well, it has been about a month since I updated to ICS. I still hate that they limit folders to 16 apps, because I can no longer stick all of my games in one folder. However, I really like some of the new stuff. The new font really looks professional. The “Data usage” tracking means I don’t have to worry about getting into bandwidth limiting. I use the “recent apps” (long press home) all of the time. The camera and Gmail apps are much better now. It is very stable (as was Gingerbread).
@party5225 I only have the T-mobile Nexus S, so I don't know about the other Nexus S models. I do know that it won't work on the Sprint 4G version. I have been encouraging people to write in with their results, but so far I haven't had much feedback. MrDaggerthuggert from Denmark wrote that it worked for him. zzzzz7525 from the U.K. wrote that it didn't work for him (or her). I have a lot of views of the video, but I don't know how many actually applied the update.
@kapustaization It's the Over-The-Air Android 4.0.3 update for T-mobile phones as a manual install. It's meant for phones that are currently running Android 2.3.6. It's not meant for "rooted" phones, so I don't know whether they will accept this update. If you have this phone, and you're in the U.S.A., you will probably get this update automatically without having to use this manual method. Please read through the description and comments to be sure you have the right phone. Enjoy!
@habitatkilla I have never encountered this problem. Maybe check that you don't have some utility on your PC or Mac that automatically expands (opens) zip files. You want the file in the "/" directory of your phone, still zipped (one zip file). If you figure out your problem, let us know. Good luck!
@hattingh23 You don't have to root your phone for this update. Please leave a comment for others to say whether it worked. I just have my one phone, so I can't go through the different test cases. Thanks.
@Chanskos5 I made the video, and my phone still works fine running ICS. Some key points from the comments: I have a T-mobile phone (i9020T) that is SIM unlocked, but was not rooted, and I was running Android 2.3.6. If you want to apply this update, first update your phone to 2.3.6. The update definitely won't work on the Sprint 4G model. There a comments that says it worked in Denmark, but failed in Greece. You can always wait for the Over the Air update (no risk, but patience).
@overcat2001 i bought my phone in Azerbaijan, so i am waiting the Update over the air but now is already 30 january 2012 but still the update is didnt came to my phone((( but my friend got to his phone update in novermber even.. why then we gotta wait.. i am waiting so much bro..( ehhh
@Sweetybboy At least you know that it will eventually update. There aren't many other phones that will get the update.
You can try to ask for the update from your phone, but this has never worked for me:
System settings -> About phone -> System updates -> Check now (or similar menu items, as this is from the ICS version). I guess you probably tried this already.
@overcat2001 but so much times is passed from release the ICS and i am so without passion wanna update it to my phone too.. but the update is still doesnt came to my phone.. damn(
yes i am always check it out but there writing that - NO UPDATE for now.. so but what you suppose to me? if i`ll get update from this video description as manual?? is it gonna worked by me correctly if i`ll do this.. can u albeit tell me this man please,.
@MegaMiravi Mine wasn't rooted; it was just a T-mobile no contract phone (i9020T). Do you have the same model? At what point did the update fail? What was the message? Did the phone revert to Gingerbread, or did it get into a bad state? I didn't edit out anything in my video, so it should show all of the steps. If it doesn't work for you, then there must be something different about our phones. Let me know your model, and I'll update my description to say it doesn't work.Sorry
@overcat2001 when i went to bootloader menu i clicked on recovery, than it showed me android with box and then android with triangle. I pressed power+vol+and than apply update from /sdcard (same as you). Then i clicked on update.zip it says:
@MegaMiravi Well, the i9020 and i9023 have a different screen, but I don't think that would be it. I googled "google/soju/crespo" and found people were having the same type of messages when trying to go from 2.3.2 to 2.3.4. Someone wrote in that the update (in their case) was only valid for going from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4. After going from 2.3.2 to 2.3.3, they were able to go to 2.3.4. Google "Blake Stimac update 2.3.4" for the article. Maybe the ICS update requires 2.3.6 to work.
Your error message does mention 2.3.6, so maybe this is the problem. It's good to hear that Android checks the new firmware before applying it; however, you might have trouble getting your rooted firmware to match the stock 2.3.6 firmware.
This might not be your problem, but it's my best guess. I don't work for Google, so I don't have anyone I can call to verify. Let me know when you get your phone updated. If you make a video, I'll link to it. Good luck
@MegaMiravi Sorry, but this is beyond what I know about the phone. I hope you can get some help on one of the hacking forums. Try putting a comment on the site where you learned to root your phone. If you can get to someone in the Android group at Google, they could certainly help you out. You can also try posting on the Android developers forums, because they are all updating their phones to ICS now. Let me know how you make out with this problem.
@MegaMiravi If you look at the beginning of the video, it shows that I was at Android 2.3.6 before the update and ended with 4.0.3. You can use Google to find the earlier update firmwares. I didn't save the older firmware files, but I think I updated to 2.3.4, then updated to 2.3.6. I believe 2.3.5 was only available for the Sprint 4G version of the phone. Be sure to back up your apps. I use Astro file manager to backup.
@cheezo545 I bought mine "unlocked" for use in France, but T-Mobile still included one of their SIM cards (never used). I bought it at Best Buy for $529 without a contract. I use a SIM card from SFR, one of the French mobile phone service providers. It seemed confusing to me that I bought a phone without a contract, but they included a T-mobile SIM card. There were never any T-mobile apps on the phone. It's pure Google Android (but made by Samsung).
Google made a nice, concise table that explains the transition from Android 2.3 to 4.0. You can find it by searching for "Tips for Android 2.3 users".
@cheezo545 You definitely don't need root, because I didn't have root access when I did the update. I don't know the details of the warranty as to whether you are supposed to wait for Over-The-Air updates. You might want to wait. I don't think you can go back to the previous firmware if you're not happy with ICS. Gingerbread worked well for me.
When I come to the part with the litte exclamation mark, I press volume up and power but the window wont open... any advice?
karlothesexy5 1 day ago

E:Error in /tmp/sideload/package.zip (Status 7) Installation aborted
karlothesexy5 20 hours ago
@karlothesexy5 I could be wrong, but it looks like you are not currently running Android 2.3.6. You have to update to 2.3.6 before using this video.
If you are already at 2.3.6, then I don't know the problem. I'm not a firmware developer; I'm just a Nexus S owner.
overcat2001 11 hours ago
hey can i update my nexus s from 2.3 to 4.0.3 without any update to 2.3.6?????i hope u got my question?????reply.:)
dp3009 3 days ago
@dp3009 You have to be on 2.3.6 for this update to work. "ceskapavlo" wrote a comment that it failed when he tried updating from 2.3.4, but that it worked after he first updated to 2.3.6.
I don't know if there's an update directly from 2.3.3 to 2.3.6. I think I did 2.3.3 to 2.3.4, then 2.3.4 to 2.3.6, then 2.3.6 to 4.0.3.
I think 2.3.5 was only for the Nexus S 4G phone. If you have a Nexus S 4G phone, this update video won't work for you.
overcat2001 2 days ago
when i click 'apply update from sd card' it says E:failed to verify whole file signature and update aborted. why cant it be verified?

@rulingmedal2 There are different versions of the Nexus S phone. I have the T-mobile version. The Sprint Nexus S 4G has a different network chip, and it requires a different firmware. The message you have means that the firmware isn't compatible with your version of the Nexus S.

this works on NEXUS S not from T-MOBILE ?
shahwali11 3 days ago
@shahwali11 Make sure you are on 2.3.6 firmware before trying. I only have the T-mobile version, but people have written comments to say that it works for: US T-mobile, Canadian Wind, Canadian Mobilicity.
It fails for US Sprint, Canadian Telus, Canadian Koodo.
Many have written comments to say that it worked in certain countries, but I don't know whether there are multiple versions of the Nexus S where they live.
You can try searching through the comments.
Let us know your results.

Everytime i try to install the update, it keeps saying "Installation failed" Can anyone help? Im using Nexus S 4g on sprint
FunnyFanatic1 6 days ago
@FunnyFanatic1 This won't work on the Sprint 4G phone. You have a different network chip. The firmware is for a T-mobile Nexus S and a few other Nexus S models, but not for the 4G ones. I mentioned this in the description and in some comments.
The Sprint 4G firmware should be out soon, if it's not out already. Good luck.

agya05 1 week ago
@agya05 Sorry, this firmware won't work for the Canadian Koodo Nexus S. The error message is Android's way of saying that the firmware is not compatible. The procedure in the video should be the same for your phone, but you'll have to find the right firmware. I only have the T-mobile Nexus S, so I won't be able to help you with your search. Good luck.

HTCXLAndroid 1 week ago
@HTCXLAndroid This firmware definitely won't work on your HTC XL phone. It's specific to only certain hardware versions of the Google Nexus S. It won't even work on the Sprint version of the Nexus S, because it uses a different network chip.

And what about the downgrade?
MegaMiravi 1 week ago
@MegaMiravi I don't know how to downgrade. Did you get your phone updated to ICS? If so, what problems are you having? Eventually all of the Nexus S phones will be getting the ICS update through Over-The-Air, so it would be good to know what the problems are.
If anyone has information on downgrading the Nexus S firmware, please post a comment for MegaMiravi.
overcat2001 1 week ago
@overcat2001 yes, i have ICS there are not too many problems but ICS is for galaxy nexus (2 cores and processor 1.5Ghz) so there are lags, and battery live is worse too and i cant launch some of games
MegaMiravi 1 week ago
@MegaMiravi I haven't noticed the lags, but I don't play anything that really pushes the performance limits (mostly backgammon). My battery life does seem worse now. I thought this was because I was using it much more, but it's probably also due to ICS.
Unfortunately, I don't have the information for you to downgrade, but I'll update the description so that others consider the possible performance and battery-life issues.
As for the games that don't launch, leave a note for the developers.
overcat2001 1 week ago
@overcat2001 ok,thanks but in ICS are lags, and some games cant be launched, but it's the newest system and it just amaizing!! so i dont know if i want to downgrade or not, but i want root. and i dont want manully root. i want a program. but i dont know root program for ICS. you know?
MegaMiravi 1 week ago
@MegaMiravi I haven't rooted my phone, but someone on xda-developers has a program that might work. Search the web for "guide root access and cmw recovery in stock ics rom". They use the same ICS firmware, so it should work. Of course, use at your own risk, and let us know your results if you try it. Be sure to backup everything just in case.
If the list is short, it would be nice to know which games don't currently launch under ICS.

plz help me out, im little bit scary..

Nitun89 1 week ago
@Nitun89 I'm pretty sure that the update won't work unless you are currently on 2.3.6, so you would have to update to that first.
With my T-mobile phone, the update added panorama mode to the camera and time-lapse to the video camera.
A viewer left a comment to say that this update would work for Wind and Mobilicity, but I personally have a T-mobile phone.
Can any Mobilicity users write in to say that everything works with this update (or doesn't)?
Any Mobilicity users out there who can

@overcat2001 if you do not mind, do you have any link , how to update 2.3.4 to 2.3.6 .? then i'll update my phone 2.3.6 to 4.0.3
Nitun89 1 week ago
@Nitun89 When I updated my T-mobile from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6, I had random reboots every few days. I ended up doing a hard reset. It fixed the problems, but I had to reinstall my apps. I'm not comfortable linking to that update.
There seems to be a site "mobilesyrup" that has a lot of information for Canadian users. They may have the update, or at least you can leave a comment and get better info from someone who knows the Mobilicity Nexus S.
You could also try askiing Mobilicity...

Is this a safe upgrade??
Devilhunter110 1 week ago
@Devilhunter110 The safest update is to wait for the Over-The-Air update to be pushed to your phone. Ice Cream Sandwich has some nice new features, but Gingerbread worked fine too. Once you update, it will be hard to go back (I don't know how).
This update is just a manual version of the OTA update for the T-mobile Nexus S running 2.3.6. If you have a different phone or a different version of Android, then this update probably won't work. Based on comments, it does work on some others.
overcat2001 1 week ago
I have the Nexus S with Sprint, I currently use Android version 2.3.7, If I update to version 4.0 will I loose everything on my phone? And I mean text messages, pictures, music, downloaded apps etc? Is the 4.0 version even available for the Nexus S Sprint?
z0iiNkS 1 week ago
@z0iiNkS The firmware in this video won't work for you.
I didn't lose files or apps when I went from 2.3.6 to 4.0.3. However, you should definitely backup everything before updating (when firmware becomes available). I had a problem when updating from 2.3.4 to 2.3.6 (phone had random problems). When I did a hard reset, it deleted my apps, and only the paid apps were restored. Fortunately, I had backed up all apps with Astro File Manager. I don't remember whether music and other files
overcat2001 1 week ago
@z0iiNkS (continued) were deleted, but I would copy them to a PC before updating.
I believe there was a leaked version of Android 4 for the Sprint 4G, so an official version should be coming soon. It may have already been released, but I only have the T-mobile Nexus S. (Two ears, but just one phone...)
By the way, the hard reset fixed the random problems I was having in 2.3.6 (for those who found this comment by googling).

BOMBAY32d 1 week ago

JeanyBravo 2 weeks ago
@JeanyBravo No. It won't work for the Samsung Galaxy S II LTE. You'll get the ICS update eventually, but it won't be from me. I just have the "old" T-mobile Nexus S.
The French carrier SFR announced that ICS would be coming to the Galaxy S2 in March, so you may not have to wait long.
overcat2001 2 weeks ago
@overcat2001
thanks much! do you know if North American and UK or EU release dates for software are the same or probably need to search for a torrent upload directly to my phone and manually update it?
JeanyBravo 2 weeks ago
@JeanyBravo From what I have seen for my phone (Nexus S), the release dates for the phone and for software updates have been different in the U.S. and France. Even the Nexus S models in the U.S. (AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile) have different updates, because the Sprint has a different network chip and officially supports Google Wallet.
Be careful to get the right update for your exact model of phone. The Nexus S seems to check that the firmware is correct before updating, but maybe not others.
overcat2001 1 week ago
@overcat2001 NOTE: I can't guarantee that all Nexus S models verify the update before installing. Also, if you have root access, you can probably override these checks (which would be bad).
Good luck.

ashstikler 2 weeks ago
@ashstikler This is a much more complicated procedure. Search for "downgrade android firmware" if you really need to do this. I have never downgraded, so I wouldn't be much help to you.
Older apps are being optimized for Ice Cream Sandwich. Also, Google just released Chrome Beta only for phones running ICS. Chrome is faster and better then the "Browser" in every other version. You can find Chrome Beta on the Android Market. To me, it's worth getting ICS just for Chrome.
overcat2001 2 weeks ago
@overcat2001 It would be helpful for others to know what is wrong with ICS. Could you tell us what doesn't work under ICS? Did this update last week and my phone (GT-I9020XX) has been a lot more fun to play with, much quicker/smoother, the wifi signal seems better, connection to the actual cellular network has improved a lot compared to that of the 2.3.6 version (for me anyways), oh and the battery life is just awesome! if i just check the time, do a few texts and light web browsing, my bat will just drain at about 2.5%/hr as apposed to ~4%/hr before.
I highly recommended if you are running 2.3.6 stock Google ROM!

jellevdvliet 3 weeks ago
@jellevdvliet I think that "lock state : unlocked" means you have a "rooted" phone. Someone left a comment to say that this update worked for them, but it really depends on your specific Nexus S model. There are actually a few different models (see Wikipedia).
I have the T-mobile version. Leave a comment with your model, and maybe someone else has done the update and can help you. Otherwise, wait for the over-the-air update.
There are some hacking websites that deal with rooted phones.

overcat2001 3 weeks ago
@overcat2001 Actually, as it turned out, the ICS I installed with the help of your video was extremely slow, and I went through many hours of turmoil searching up websites that might help me downgrade it back to Gingerbread. I ended up carrying out a solution where I would root my phone and then unroot it back to Gingerbread, but once I finished the rooting step, I ended up with a very smooth ICS so I figure I will leave it rooted as is, and now I'm happy. :)
plattawabbe 3 weeks ago
@plattawabbe Thanks for the feedback. Yours is the first comment that mentions this problem of speed. So if I understand, you're using the ICS firmware from the video, but you rooted your phone after the update.

MrDaggerthuggert from Denmark wrote that it worked for him. zzzzz7525 from the U.K. wrote that it didn't work for him (or her). I have a lot of views of the video, but I don't know how many actually applied the update.

is it official version?
kapustaization 1 month ago
@kapustaization It's the Over-The-Air Android 4.0.3 update for T-mobile phones as a manual install. It's meant for phones that are currently running Android 2.3.6. It's not meant for "rooted" phones, so I don't know whether they will accept this update. If you have this phone, and you're in the U.S.A., you will probably get this update automatically without having to use this manual method. Please read through the description and comments to be sure you have the right phone. Enjoy!

the zip file wont go with my folders it keeps saying multi volume what shoud i do ?
habitatkilla 1 month ago
@habitatkilla I have never encountered this problem. Maybe check that you don't have some utility on your PC or Mac that automatically expands (opens) zip files. You want the file in the "/" directory of your phone, still zipped (one zip file). If you figure out your problem, let us know. Good luck!

thank's, i have just rooted my phone... hope it works!
hattingh23 1 month ago
@hattingh23 You don't have to root your phone for this update. Please leave a comment for others to say whether it worked. I just have my one phone, so I can't go through the different test cases. Thanks.

So can anyone tell me???what is status 7????
Chanskos5 1 month ago
@Chanskos5 I made the video, and my phone still works fine running ICS. Some key points from the comments: I have a T-mobile phone (i9020T) that is SIM unlocked, but was not rooted, and I was running Android 2.3.6. If you want to apply this update, first update your phone to 2.3.6. The update definitely won't work on the Sprint 4G model. There a comments that says it worked in Denmark, but failed in Greece. You can always wait for the Over the Air update (no risk, but patience).

Sweetybboy 4 weeks ago
@Sweetybboy At least you know that it will eventually update. There aren't many other phones that will get the update.
You can try to ask for the update from your phone, but this has never worked for me:
System settings -> About phone -> System updates -> Check now (or similar menu items, as this is from the ICS version). I guess you probably tried this already.
Good luck!

MegaMiravi 1 month ago
@MegaMiravi Mine wasn't rooted; it was just a T-mobile no contract phone (i9020T). Do you have the same model? At what point did the update fail? What was the message? Did the phone revert to Gingerbread, or did it get into a bad state? I didn't edit out anything in my video, so it should show all of the steps. If it doesn't work for you, then there must be something different about our phones. Let me know your model, and I'll update my description to say it doesn't work.Sorry

@overcat2001 and i have Nexus s i9023 (android 2.3.3)
MegaMiravi 1 month ago
@MegaMiravi Well, the i9020 and i9023 have a different screen, but I don't think that would be it. I googled "google/soju/crespo" and found people were having the same type of messages when trying to go from 2.3.2 to 2.3.4. Someone wrote in that the update (in their case) was only valid for going from 2.3.3 to 2.3.4. After going from 2.3.2 to 2.3.3, they were able to go to 2.3.4. Google "Blake Stimac update 2.3.4" for the article. Maybe the ICS update requires 2.3.6 to work.
overcat2001 1 month ago
@overcat2001 (continued)
Good luck

@overcat2001 thanks, but i have problem: when i want to go to bootloader and click on "recovery" it write i am in fastboot and i can't recovery :(
MegaMiravi 1 month ago
@MegaMiravi Sorry, but this is beyond what I know about the phone. I hope you can get some help on one of the hacking forums. Try putting a comment on the site where you learned to root your phone. If you can get to someone in the Android group at Google, they could certainly help you out. You can also try posting on the Android developers forums, because they are all updating their phones to ICS now. Let me know how you make out with this problem.

@overcat2001 ok thanks, but i rooted my phone without any advice..
and how it's possible you have android 2.3.4 and i have only 2.3.3?
MegaMiravi 1 month ago
@MegaMiravi If you look at the beginning of the video, it shows that I was at Android 2.3.6 before the update and ended with 4.0.3. You can use Google to find the earlier update firmwares. I didn't save the older firmware files, but I think I updated to 2.3.4, then updated to 2.3.6. I believe 2.3.5 was only available for the Sprint 4G version of the phone. Be sure to back up your apps. I use Astro file manager to backup.

i forgot to ask you...will this update work on unlocked nexus s phones? or only on T-Mobile?
cheezo545 1 month ago
@cheezo545 I bought mine "unlocked" for use in France, but T-Mobile still included one of their SIM cards (never used). I bought it at Best Buy for $529 without a contract. I use a SIM card from SFR, one of the French mobile phone service providers. It seemed confusing to me that I bought a phone without a contract, but they included a T-mobile SIM card. There were never any T-mobile apps on the phone. It's pure Google Android (but made by Samsung).

Google made a nice, concise table that explains the transition from Android 2.3 to 4.0. You can find it by searching for "Tips for Android 2.3 users".
overcat2001 1 month ago
this is legit right? (you dont need root and it wont void your warranty?)
cheezo545 1 month ago
@cheezo545 You definitely don't need root, because I didn't have root access when I did the update. I don't know the details of the warranty as to whether you are supposed to wait for Over-The-Air updates. You might want to wait. I don't think you can go back to the previous firmware if you're not happy with ICS. Gingerbread worked well for me.
