I think Kyokushin is more about taking hits, and Shotokan is more about realistic fighting not so much a sport because they alow full contact punches to the face and in most countries they wear zero protection besides hand wraps, which is mostly so no blood gets on people. kyokushin dosent even alow head punches which looks stupid cause they are like 10 inches from eachother not gaurding their faces... Shotokan you have to get in and out with a KO punch, its awesome!!!
kyokushin is more martial than arts, i like both styles. i practice shotokan, i'd like to say i shortened my gi when training in japan cos its bloody humid but its more of a trend in kyokushin to do that... at a guess, its to stop opponents grabbing their sleeves and less restricting doing chudan punches
Kata training can benefit training if you actually take the techniques from the kata and practice them the way they were originally intended. Shotokan schools vary as do many others. Over all Shotokan offers a lot of it is taught right.
I'm learning traditional Shotokan, not the watered down crap. If you're doing Shotokan, you should be doing the one-steps, the bunkai, and not messing with the kata. Train correctly, train hard, and you'll see results.
No, what I'm saying is that people too often and too casually change the kata instead of following the traditional sequence and training. I've looked at kata on youtube and elsewhere and seen some serious tinkering that disturbs me. My kata are traditional and as I go off to teach later in life, I plan to stay true to the tradition.
i trained shotokan and i am training kyokushinkai now. i would never say that shotokan is the weaker style. BUT in my opinion the organisations in europe, usa and even in japan really weakend it by ripping the realistic fight techniques apart and making it a fun sport! some "dojos" dont even teach bunkai techniques, the very essence of streetfighting. kyoshinkai is more "traditional" and understands itself a realistic fightingstyle, therefore the training more realistic.
People always fight over which style is better. Some say Kyokushin is stronger because of its endurance and realism. Shotokan can be very strong but it must be practiced properly. As seen here it really depends on the fighter. IMO Shotokan can at times be stale but I think people are too concerned with how good their kata look in place of actually leraning from them.
Personally I like them both but I study Shotokan because it just suits me better. I wouldn't mind training in Kyokushin though.
the kyokushin guy should have noticed and block ushiro mawashi geri (roundhouse kick) but the kick itself was very fast. I train kyokushin myself 4 couples of years now and i must say that that kind of technique and speed is a serious threat to any kyokushin fighter (whos biggest advantage is endurance).
Holy SHIT! thats what shotokan is all about
