  • tuts500 praying 4 u! :)

  • Just wow looking @5:59 and @6:20 is just this thing is a monster.

  • I started to doubt this as the Greensburg tornado, because it happened about 10 pm, and the first of the videos was during daylight, albeit dark. But this is good footage. Thank you all for placing your lives in danger so that the rest of us can receive warnings. From Wichita, Kansas.

  • Dang I've seen this vidio a hundred times and that amazing I love Storms sispificly Tornados I live in Olmitz Kansas wich is about 20 miles from Great Bend Kansas wich is like in the middle of Kansas and this was the most powerful tornado ever recorded E-F5 On the Fujida Scale

  • oh... bless those that lost there homes in that tornado

  • y did god make mother nature hav so harsh of weather?

  • The name "Protection" is misleading and should be banned.

  • You guys have cajones the size of Jupiter!

  • omg and these guys don't even have their seat belts on!

  • Woah...so scary, but so breath taking too.

  • oh my freaking god. this is seriously scary. it made my stomach hurt.

  • that is f'ing deadly, whole entire town immersed inside 205mph winds for 3 minutes. that's just crazy..

  • i lived ithto 2yrs pror tthe hit i just hopethe neighbor i had he used to ma beefjeky for me i lived rigt next to tha church was workiwit DAVE MOYER READY MX

  • that thing was so big even if was infront of you, you would have idae wut it was just b/c of it's sheer size.....thats terrifying...

  • how r u not scared?

  • @ZombieSlayer742 Because they were behind the tornado, and in no danger.

  • i will never forget the day this happend. there isnt a day that passes by with out me thinking of this

  • No wonder Reed from the show STROM CHASERS sounds so familiar because if seen him on youtube before

  • This was by far the worst strom I have ever been in. I worked the power lines from greensburg up to macksville that night clearing them off the road so the traffic could go through the country side since hwy 54 was closed down. The following 3 days we had tornados in nearly the same path. I remember all of the farms that were completely leveled and finding their equipment miles away from where they had it parked.

  • I'm going to be honest. I prefer the old Fujita scale than the new Enhanced Fujita scale.

  • @elr456 Really? Why? The Enhanced Fujita Scale is much more precise and specific.

  • @williepayt01 Tornadoes seem stronger when classified by the old Fujita scale. An EF5 can have wind speeds of an old F3. But that's just me and I must face facts. In reality the EF scale is more precise and specific like you said. It's more accurate in determining the strength of a tornado in comparison with the buildings it destroys and their constructions.

  • @elr456 actually, i did notice that. that does seem pretty weird. Tho you can see what an ef5 is capable of from this video, imagine an f5.

  • @williepayt01

EF5 is essentially the same as and F5. The wind estimates are lower because the original estimates for what is needed to do F5 damage were too high.

  • @williepayt01 They are the same exact thing. Look it up.

  • I can't imagine how horrible that must have been, I;m fortunate to live in an area with little to no threat of tornadoes. @tuts550 I am so sorry to hear about your friend, god bless you and the people of Greensburg.

  • All of us here in SW Kansas are a closely knit group of people. I was 18 at the time, still in high school. I had played basketball games, football & run track & field there that same school year.

Sure, I wasn't the biggest fan of the town, or the school, but we're district rivals and we knew we could beat them in anything but basketball. I put that aside. I felt it was my duty to stay and help as much as I could, for as long as I could.

  • west of Greensburg when the town was hit. Our friend at the NWS in Dodge City gave us the all clear sign when the tornado was no longer a threat to our saftey.

After that, I spend my entire weekend in Greensburg with teams going house to house in search of missing people and to clear the home if needed. 11 died in Greensburg, and one Deputy from if I remember correctly St. John was killed when the tornado rolled his patrol car into the ditch.

  • @lycandrew the Deputy was from Macksville

  • I'm sure none of you know this, or at least the vast majority of you don't.

The cell was seen on radar as 5 cells rotating around one large one. The recording by radar of it's size was apx 7 miles wide at the widest point but only around 1 3/4 miles wide when it hit Greensburg. That night I was with storm spotters who are friends of mine, out of Dodge City, KS. I am an volunteer EMT, and community first responder (volunteer b/c there is nothing but that for Fire/EMS). We were I'd say 4 miles

  • ***** Exceptional work guys! You served yourselves and Greensburg with honor and distinction. You did this while making a "vital" audio and video record of the crisis hours after the storm. What's more, unlike many storm chasers, all of you in the car were calm and kept your wits together — thinking of people first and your camera second.

  • go 2 6:49 4 the real tornado and pause

  • Quiet before the storm

  • no 009 fucking spirit b.s.?

  • wow cant believe you guys were so close to the tornado!!! plus you were storm chaseing at night thats scary!!!!

  • I'm from the Netherlands and I remember that night verry good!

We we're in Great Bend with our USA Family for a family reunion We stayed at a hotel. There was a tornado watch that evening and we went outside to listen to the sirenes. I will never forget the sound of the wind. It was like someone was playing a flute. We al had to stay in the hotel lobby until danger was gone.

I still have the newspaper with al the images of Greensburg al gone that was horrible.

I'm glad that we stayed oke.

  • whats the difference between an F5 and an EF5

  • @jackxtremexl The EF Scale is the new tornado-rating scale, based on more detailed surveying of damage and a more conservative estimate of the wind speeds needed to cause such damage. The Fujita Scale was pegged to the Beaufort Scale (measuring wind speed) and went all the way up to Mach 1 (F12) though nothing above F5 could be used in practice (because F5 damage is essentially complete). The EF Scale replace the original F Scale in 2007.

  • @jackxtremexl Its the Fujita Scale(old rating system) and Enhanced Fujita Scale(new) The Greensburg Tornado was the first Tornado to gain the rare EF5 rating.

The EF5 means that the wind speed of the monster was greater than 200 mph.

the tornado would have been a F5 if the old system were still implemented.

  • @jackxtremexl and the new scale takes into account how large of a base the tornado has to the wind speeds and how much the tornado destroys/eats.

  • Man, that MUST BE scary, it's like a horror-flik...a monster that destroys everything in its path that you can't see. I used to live in Plano, TX (in tornado alley) and getting hit by a tornado at night was the only fear I ever had there. Fortunately, we never did (we had some that hit close by, though) but whenever we'd get those big night-time storms, that Weather Channel would be on...lol

  • saw the aftermath. completely devastating. all that was left was shreds of plywood. makes your everyday tornado seem like a gentle breeze.

  • im getting annoyed by them guys saying "oh my god" alot.

  • I remember the president flying over my school to go t greensburg. It was awesome.

  • Make your buck you silly GREEDY CREEP...

  • for a tornado of it's power and the amount of damaged it did. I am surprised that only 11 people were killed. I am not trying to sound rude, but that number could have been much higher. Imagine what it would have been like with no warning or a very short time to react to the warning. Let the people rest in peace, and let the survivors consider themselves lucky.

  • @Gergerberger As I understand it, most of the people killed were sheltering in their homes like everyone else and had the misfortune to be directly hit by the EF4/EF5 zone at the core of the tornado. You can probably survive an F3 in a frame house, but an F4 requires a basement for a good chance at survival and an F5's almost a death sentence. There have been several EF5s where the tornado collapsed the foundations and scoured the basement bare, blowing the occupants out to their death.

  • @Bullzeye95 you took the words right out of my mouth man!!..thankfully ef5 are rare..but most house wont stand a ef5 at all..unless you are basically underground went it hit that the only way to survive..problem is you gonna have to wait for some one to dig you out from debris unless you get lucky enought the the tornado blows it away..very dangerous stuff.my advice..see a ef5 run the other way fast.

  • @panthom309 thats if you can outrun it

  • You know God's angry when he takes out a whole town. Unbelievable.

  • 6:21 !!!!

  • You need nerves of steel to put yourself through this!

  • @MrAmericanAce shut up. people died in that tornado, people lost their lives, houses, all their belongings. dont joke about that shit.

  • I remember how terrified i was when a puny little tornado compared to this was down the street from me, i can only imagine the terror of which the people of Greensburg felt, and i could see my tornado :P

  • Q: I've viewed a few Greensburg 07 documentations of this storm. I noticed you mentioned a time frame around 20:30...not being familiar with 'what daylight' is appropriate for the time of day, did the sun go down as this played out or was the cell so thick it blotted out daylight to make it look 'like night'....or is it a combo? I don't really have a feel for 'how much real time' passed from the beginning to end of videography? Have a safe season guys, it's already upon you.

  • Chasing tornadoes at night seems completely insane to me.

  • i would stuck my head between my knees and kissed my ass goodbye this is just amazing this is the shit that makes me want to be a meterologist

  • i know lots about tornadoes i saw a storm stories show about the f5 tornado. if you think this is not funny, think about if you were there i wasnt but i know how it would feel

  • WOW!!a EF-5 tornado at night scary as hell.Oh no the cops are trying to save your life!.Sick wtf

  • Almost two miles wideO.O

It's bad enough when you can see one coming, but being blind(aside from lightning) to it's presence as well?

Added to the fact that it was going to obliterate anything in it's path from it's size and sheer power, and you're talking unimaginable horror.

The stuff nightmares are made of...

  • i hade i dream were i was taken in by 1 but didnt die till the house i was in rapided into rain drop sized pieces

  • @onehitta1 Any real storm chaser carries around a laptop with a dedicated USB modem internet connection for Doppler radar, sometimes combined with GPS.

  • @onehitta1 Yeah, I've never been in a tornado, but stuff like this scares the shit out of me!

  • my friend was killed in that tornado

  • @tuts550 why do people like this?

  • @TheTroop730 I was wondering the same.

  • @tuts550 Im sorry. I have just learned of this this year. And i am truly sorry.

  • this is the 1 major risk 2 living in kansas, i lived in wichita/haysville during the 99' twisters

  • yes i do last time i checked debree from houses trees and cars can be used like missles when theres a tornado so shut up i had a baby cousin who died in there!

  • I am a native Kansan and I just found out that two good friends of mine -whom I unintentionally lost touch with- did not survive the Greensburg EF5

    Rest In Peace, Ron

    Rest In Peace, Marty.

see you when I get there

  • Not to be a dick, but that's kind of a dumb question.

  • grdgtd

  • ??????

  • i dont really know about tornados

  • you seriously dont know enough about tornados to see how people or animals might get killed by one? wow.

  • my friend was near one in canada

  • I live in Cisco, TX and we only had one tornado here and it was in 1893 so I wasn't even born, and we haven't had a tornado here since then so I have never experienced a tornado the tornado alarm has gone off one time but a tornado never touched the ground.

  • alright one thing. Living in Kansas and having gone through countless tornado's i know some things that some people are really far from the truth.

First thing. There is no such thing as a warning issued a day before. These storms can develop very very fast into something that is very destructive.

Warning or not you want to be underground before a tornado hits. The one that hit my addition about 10 years ago ripped a roof off the foundation and half the house.

  • Yeah, people are idiotic. the only time you would get a warning would be the the storm had been traveling over to your location and extreme winds and funnel clouds had been reported.

  • I'm in the UK & don't know much about this, did the people in Greensberg have warning ? So they could get away before it hit ?

  • When a Tornado is on it's way, you have anywhere from 5-10 minutes to get to safety. The Oklahoma city tornado was also an F5. It produced winds of up to 318 mph. The fastest recorded on earth.

  • thank you!

  • There is a difference between the EF ("enhanced fujita") and the F ("fujita") scales, the EF system is dumbed down from the F, with the wind speeds required not being as large. Example: An F5 requires wind speeds of at least 261 mph, while an EF5 requires only 200 mph. This means that an F4 or even an F3 can become an EF5 with the new system. Pretty bad, since people then try to draw parallels with the 1999 tornado, which was the most powerful in the recorded history.

  • That is incorrect. The Scale is based on damage, not windspeed. The windspeeds are estimates as to what would cause each category's damage. Scientists have found that they overestimated the windspeeds for the higher categories (i.e. it takes a 200 mph wind to do F5 damage rather than 261) F5 and EF5 damage are basically the same. If either the Greensburg or Parkersburg tornadoes had happened before 2007 they would still have been rated F5.

  • sometimes you only have a few seconds.

  • There are no warnings the day before a tornado hits! they get a probabillity of tornadiac activity!

  • They probably did but It usually is not a good idea to evacuate from a tornado. The best plan is to take shelter in a basement. You'd be safe from all but the strongest of tornadoes there. Unfortunately this tornado was that strong. But things like this are rare.

  • yes but the warning could not tell them how powerful it was the entire town was destroyed only 2 thing standing a Grain Elevator and the town court house. I drove by about 2 weeks after and could not believe what I saw.

  • Yes they did have warning. Many of them were in shelter and still were injured from what I understand. If they had not had warning there would have been alot more deaths. I have a few friends that were from Greensburg. Luckily none of them where at home or in Greensburg that night.

  • hi everyone

  • i remember seeing the tornado is was fuckin huge i have lived in kansas for twelve years that was the biggest one i have ever seen

  • i remember watching this on the new. my town was hit so hard will rain, hail, and lightning and thunder. its tragic. bt greensburg will b beautiful when its rebuilt.

  • you know, its very weird. i live very very close to greensburg and all that hit us was rain! that was a very good miricle for my town!

  • Hmm, I didn't know N.Y was sooooo close. i love it when people come into nado vids and say they were there, lolololol

  • hahah. i only say i live in n.y. cuz i dont lyk strangers too kno where i live. bt i live lyk 15 min away from greensburg. so yeahhhh

  • Don't believe you

  • it would suck if a tornado actually touched down on top of a person

  • Man that guy would be one unlucky bastard because the odds of that happening is 1/1000000

  • It's happened before.

  • i wish i waqs there

    it looked cool

  • how fucked up the add at the bottom of the video that popped up for me was for Wichita Realty lol greensburg still isnt even close to being rebuilt which is sad, i drive through there every now and then

  • nice. The people were unlucky becouse the twister was in the night.

  • 5:58.

  • Also it must have turned from 2:00 to 12:00 from those dark clouds

  • I remember visiting one of my relatives in Kansas (Cousin) at the time period and well i heard it all on the news. It was sad i never saw a tornado before

  • Comment removed

  • Yeah fatal, And its the ENHANCED fujita scale! which is pretty big.

  • Oh my god, they were seriously filming the face of death haha. And the fact that it was at night time makes it even scarier.

  • @2:43.. its a spin off tornado.. it usually happens with big tornadoes..

  • @ 2:43 Look at the left side of the screen what is that thing?

  • It is a satellite tornado, which is a term given to a weaker tornado which forms very near a large, strong tornado contained within the same mesocyclone.

These weaker tornadoes appear to 'orbit' the larger one, hence the term satellite.

  • Dang that thing was weird looking though.

  • and you just copied that from wikipedia

  • Your point being?

  • w/e

  • me and my dad were chasing that storm too, and when we saw that tornado we were screaming " holy shit!!" i will never forget that day!

  • scary at 7:00 holy shit

  • now thats an EF5

  • Slow shot at 5:58 ....whoa

  • OMFG!!!

  • At the beggining of the day, it looked to be like a normal, good for stormchasing. Then, BAM. A tornado hits a populated area and destroys everything.

Damn. I feel sorry for the people of Greensburg. I hope they fully rebuild eventually.

  • they did rebuild it.. :) i still am very sorry that 10 people died in that tornado

  • i like storms

  • Its such a weird feeling when I watch this...its so massive and so dangerous.

  • This has got to be one of the most terrifying storms ever. Giant night tornados are nothing but real bad news. I heard the tornado that touched down just after the Greensburg one was some 2.5 miles wide!

  • Massive...

  • Comment removed

  • you got that off the movie twister.

  • ROfl

  • Though i got -5

  • Why would you laugh you bastard

  • i love tornadoes but this is the biggest one i've ever seen! WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Almost 2 miles wide. I've never heard of such a thing.

  • Hallam, Nebraska, was supposedly the largest tornado on record (about 2 miles wide). Not sure if I spelled the name of the town right. I was watching one special that said *theoretically*, the widest a tornado could get would be about 4 miles across.

  • 5:58

Mother of God! That thing is a beast!

  • Great footage.

  • i was born on may 5 and when i found out abow this on my b'day, i was just praying that no one was hurt

  • Now at about 5:25 to about 5:50. I noticed that the video went from shooting a smaller stove pipe tornado to finally shooting the wedge. Did they just sneak up on that tornado and were surprised by it, or was the video fast forwarded to them coming up to the wedge?

  • Not only is this occuring on the day of my birthday, it just goes to show that a tornado can strike at day or at night, it doesn't make a difference, and the ones at night are really devastating cause u cant see them

  • Oh yeah and it's not like your looking through a dark cave that hasn't seen light in over 1,000 years. The lightning flashes give the early stages and the tornadoes strengthening a good touch. It's not that hard to see.

  • The lightning flashes give some meaning to the video. Seeing the old meso occlude also was key to the development of the tornado

  • Poor town. It's amazing that deaths were so low. Still 11 people died, it has a real sobering effect. I will say that Greensburg has to be one of the most resilient towns i've ever seen. I've heard about towns being abandoned after stuff like this. They've started to rebuild in the wake of a monster of a tornado.

  • I was chasing right behind TVN

  • I would be terrified if I saw something like that comming at me. Im glad they didnt get hit by one this year too.

  • does ppl mean people?

  • yes

  • yes

  • SWEEEEEET! But still sad that those ppl died in greensburg

  • lmao!!!!!!!!!!

  • lol

  • The Scary thing was that I live in Emporia Ks, and that Tornado was supossed to tuch down here were i am now i went there help affter and it is somthing that will tariffi me for the rest of my life

  • emporia is over 200 miles away from greensburg... talk about close, i was chasing this storm less than 3 miles away, and i live in pratt, which is 30 miles away

  • ok well first off you dont have to be a bitch about it i did say it was scary cuz that tornado waz suposed to hit in Emporia god read my message frist

  • im sorry i didnt mean to come across as an asshole

  • Yeah man 200 miles is close enough for me with that monster,

  • You moron, I was agreeing with you, but now that you dug yourself a hole....EMPORIA is NO WHERE NEAR Greensburg....That tornado would have to defy weather physics to hit Emporia first....and it didnt TUCH down it TOUCHED down

  • whoa sorry my stupid brother had posted that coment anyways yeah i know its veary scary

  • yo GTSinc100, you think thats close?

i was chasing the tornado 2 MINUTES ahead of it and i reached greensburg 5 minutes before it hit and i was running from it but i was still chasing it telling everyone to stop and my friend got the best footage probley

  • remember it like yesterday. we almost got hit by another one this year

  • yeah i was there this year too, 3 times in fact... do you happen to know a Janet Hubert?

  • yiuiopiouuyyhghfdfgjhdjkhhkjhjkjhhkhkhkkhhj jkhjkhghjghkkgkhggkggkgkkgkghjghhgkjghgkkhghjkkgkhggjkghjgjhghjgjhghjjhjkjhklhjfhkkjfkfjhkhfkhfkfkhfhfhfjhfkjfjhkfhjfhkfkhfkfkhfhkfkfkfkfkfkfkjfkfjfkhfjhhdd fkfkghfgh jkjhkjh

  • Pause @ 7:27. FREAKING WOW! 5/5
