wHILE YOU HAVE IT PLUGGED IN YOU CAN TRansfer the cartridge sounds back onto the keyboard but as soon as you turn it off they will return to what you have now.
If the battery hasn't been replaced since factory, it's likely to be at fault and can fail later - also it can leak all over the insides of your synth!
A battery backed RAM can fail partially. It needs a sound cart or midi sysex sound dump to replace those tones though.
Do you have an expression pedal plugged in? If so, unplug it and check the voltage again. It will give an incorrect reading if you have the pedal plugged in and pressed down all the way.
Also, always keep your DX7's power plugged in (you can switch it off when you'e not using it of course). Your internal battery will use itself more if your DX7 is unplugged.
The problem may be due to a low battery voltage. To check press " function and pad 14" System is corrupt so you will have to reload sounds from the ROM cartridges or if you do not have them, search for a DX7 editor and sounds on the internet and load up a new library trough midi. Its free. Hope it helps. I own one and I can tell they are made to last.
I'm having the same problem! but my bat. voltage says 2.8v?? anybody?? all the internal voices do not say the names anymore. they are like his and don't make any noise. help!
i had the same trouble with 1 of the patches on mine.... it was simply a corrupt patch an dafter repgramming new sound into the dead patch ( 16 in my case) its bene fine ever since
oh man, i just bought a dx7 and this is EXACTLY what's wrong with it. I was going to return it to who i bought it off because i thought the memory bank was permanently fucked. good video.
Looks like the battery is about to fail. The internal battery saves every sound everytime you turn off the DX7, so that when you turn it on again, all the sounds are still there. When the battery gets old, it runs out of energy, and will stop to function properly. In the end it will not function at all. Looks like you have to open up your synth and change it.
Try to program a reasonable sound. Even though the battery is shot you should still be able to modify patches (they just won't be saved after you turn it off). Do a search for 'how to program the DX7' and get the keyboard mag article on Dave Benson's DX page (first link in google). That should tell you how to make a simple square wave. If you can't get any sound out of it after experimenting then it's not just the battery.
poor dx7, but still a great instrument, mine is awfully dead... on the red screen it says 88. and in the bigger screen, higher half of it is filled with black pixels and the lower half have nothing.. i cant do anything with it, do you guys have any idea about what is happening? :'(
Most likely if the battery is dead the patches will be gone. However, it's not difficult to restore the patches assuming you have a MIDI interface of some-kind. If you have a mac, look for sysex librarian. You can get the sysex files of the factory patches (or other patches) and send them to the DX.
I had this problem too, Im an owner of Dx7 MKI, and I agree with you 100% Beautiful instrument, no other synth sounds like it if you program it right. Anyways the issue is the battery. Keep in mind that these were assembled from 1983-1986, the battery is most likely the original. And when the battery goes bad the memory banks go corrupt. I had this problem when i had to transport the DX7 over a long distance. Just read up on how to replace the battery. Good luck!
As said, It is needed to dump a sysex bank (probably the internal battery is dead, or that synth was too much time stored and there is some garbage on memory).
Replacing internal batt is not difficult if you have electronic knowledgment. Check thedx7(dot)co(dot)uk . Good DX7 resource center.
Just find the Sysex banks for the keyboard from the internet and if you have a empty cartridge buy a new battery. I think it takes a c2032 watch battery and using the Sysex dump the data using your computer. Dont forget to disable the protect and then using a Midi USB cable you connect your Keyboard and Computer and then you Run the Sysex program and Load the Patches on to the Machine.

He's probably figured out by now that the battery was beginning to die. But in case someone else is having the same problem...

What is the patch you start playing from 0.29? It's really nice. Is it available anywhere?

I hate to break it to you but your keyboard is most likely addicted to crystal meth. Dr. Phil should be able to help you...

My unit has the modulation wheel and buttons 25, 26, 28, 29, and 32 BROKEN (not because of battery; the display won't even change!) What do I do?

check battery. HIT FUNCTION 14(BATTERY CHECK)shouldn't be below 2.2V If it is, u need a new one. normal Voltage is 2.3V-3.0V

You have to replace the internal battery - common problem. I just got a DX-7 and have been reading up on it. I need to replace mine as well.

Replace NiCad with NiMH ones, or move the battery to a remote site.
