@hebneh It still means both in both places. Eastern North Carolina it is still a dance & looks nothing like this demo from some 70-something years ago. In fact it is a -hugely popular dance in Eastern NC. There are even Shag festivals (the dance sort, not the British meaning). ;0)

Oh & it's danced to "Beach Music" in North Carolina. A who different genre than "The Beach Boys".....
I suppose upon closer examination, it does look like a similar variation to what they are doing later in the video..... but still quite different!
