Hey, i took your advice and tryed stacking 5 by hand. ( just because i have no life nad thought it was alot more interesting than watching this video)

you know how long it took me to stack 5 cans by hand? almost a full 4 seconds. i wasnt even trying, you made it sound like it would be difficult.

Nicely done. Legos have come a long way since I was little! I'd like to hear from the creator of this machine: what is used to key the gripper to a height that won't interfere with the already stacked cans, and given the amount of wobble in the upright that the gripper rides on, how does it know when to descend with the can, where the wobbling won't causing a problem with stacking the other cans?

I don't know how Lego Mindstorm programming works, but I do know a lot of C++. If this kind of programming is similar, then he definitely has a variable that the robot increments every time it sets a can. The height that the robot needs to place the can at depends on this variable.

As for it "knowing when to descend with the can," that seems simply like a "wait" function. I'm supposing it's set to wait 3-5 seconds before it descends with its next can.

Yeah, I figgered the device was programmed for these kinds of things; therefore, it's not an autonomous, "learnable" device. I didn't know if there were some kind of sensors to tell the gripper how far to ascend/descend with the can, and if there was some other sensor to detect a minimum deflection in the upright post.

seriously guys, I've made a robot with these mindstorm legos before and programmed them, It didn't take me very long. And if you have a life then maybe you'd know that this vid isn't fake because there are real robots that can do this sort of thing.
