they don't sing about being german.
Germany as we know it in nowadays is not the same as in the 16th century. Wilhelmus only says that he has a german "pedigree", he obeys the king of spain and he serves for his fatherland (=the netherlands) until he dies. It's a beautiful anthem to me and the dutch people can be proud of it.
But the dutch language is pretty hard to learn, although it sounds familiar to german. Greetings from Hamburg ;)
