michael is good but if you are used to the really aggression rock style that billy dose so well you will be very disappointed. michael can play rock jazz stuff but its not the same as billy. to his credit he still has a nice composed and intricate style from what little iv head of him but i always felt that cobhem was the most essential part of the band, tied with john himself. thats not to say i disslike the later stuff, i love everything they did pretty much
@7Beyonder You're right, but I suspect part of it is a symptom of disco music in the mid 70s spoiling the original "Hendrix" fusion vibe. I'm sure back then it was seen as an exciting movement forward for fusion. I know if albums like this were coming out now from an artist who released Birds of Fire 3 years ago that I'd still cream my pants.
@7Beyonder Hmm... I mostly listen to the classics to be honest! Squarepusher: watch?v=9-dPI129bJw , Les Claypool's Flying Frog Brigade (if you like Zappa): watch?v=Lk-D4QYBRL4&feature=related , myspace.com/ungusungusungus, vocalist's a bit nasal but very unique ideas. fusion101radio dawt kom will occasionally play something I haven't heard before. There's some places to start anyway!
@FictionaryMusic Please listen to all fusion ,it was...not just JML erying .Please go to JML,Corea,Al,Santana, and a couple more....you have to agree that even if disco destroyed....Some musicians built upon the ruins.I know--"we built the city on rock and roll" was voted the worst ever song...some musicians have built a foundation.
Awesome!!!!!! Takes me back to the days of doing acid, sheets at a time, forgetting who I was as Infinity collapsed on itself over and over again revealing the Illusion of all that is. I'm still not the same since those days!!!! Flashbacks!!!!
The track 'Inner Worlds' part 1&2 on this album is; if you are a true follower, a remarkable piece of music. The ending oozes emotion, and takes you on another level. Almost trancendental, if you like!!!:-)
Keeps me coming back for another listening so it must be great. An absolute musical masterpiece in my opinion, but then again it's John McLaughlin, and that's no surprise there. Love the sound!
Love the Mahvishnu. This however, is not thier best affair. Emerald Beyond, imo, is Way better(funkier & faster) than any composition on this "dud". Yea, I said it, dud, sad but true?
I disagree. Apocalypse is certainly not any jamming. In fact, it is one of the most fantastic compositions I have ever heard. Yes, it takes time to find it, but it is there.
But, wouldn't you allow that the added dimension of vocals with Visions of the Emerald Beyond was a move in a direction that further set the band apart from their peers and also makes that album worthy of being considered one of their best as well? Criminally underrated LP, that.
Yes, I would agree to some extent, but the impact on the music world when their 1st two albums came out was astonishing. Most of their albums are light years ahead of what other people were doing including Visions of the Emerald Beyond. The only other group I can think of that came close to them is Return to Forever.
This is not Mahavishnu Orchestra or John McLaughlin. This is Narada Michael Walden with Corrado Rusticci.

THE worst Mahavishnu albums are any without Cobham, Hammer, Laird and Goodman.
Period.
(oh, and Michal Walden was just too weak to play this type of music.)

No the worst Mahavishnu CD is Apocalypse from 1974, endless jamming, no focus.

Well they were right on their time. The direction music was going in the 70's lead to this fusion of musical Extrapolation.
