OK, this proves I am NOT the stereotype you suggest here: I was sitting on the couch watching this video and my daughter was listening across the room. When you said 'When I'm having a bad day...I buy a whole bunch of maps!' Well, my daughter and I looked up at each other and cracked up laughing. Why? Because I DO THE SAME THING!!! I am a map-o-holic!!! Sometimes I spend hours just looking at maps, for no reason other than I find them interesting. I am an avid bikier/hiker/backpacker too.
search the Department of Transportation websites for each state you are going thru. They almost all have several options. You can request a free copy of the official transportation map (mailed to you) or download a .pdf copy. Many states (like Oregon, Arizona Minnesota etc) have excellent FREE bicycle maps, and they will mail it to you at no cost. When crossing a state-line, stop at the Welcome Center, they also provide free maps. BLM, National Forest Service also have maps online for some areas
Iwas a bit down today so I went out and bought a map! LOL.
