  • Isn't this in Fair Lawn?

  • The horn is pretty cool! I like the small level crossings too!

  • just south of ridgewood junction, where the main and bergen county lines meet.

  • ha! punny gate. :)

  • Somebody was killed there years ago

  • Miss those Comet I's!

  • the comets? what happend to them

  • They have been retired for a while now!

  • @trainriders1031 Good news. The Comet IB's, which are the former Arrow-I's, have been sold to CalTrans and will soon be refurbished before they enter service.

  • Love the horn!

  • Just before crossing, they have to sound three short and one long at the crossing.

  • Actually it's Three long and one short. Long-Long-Short-Long

  • why do trains constantly sound their horn in the states?

  • It is the law for the trains to sound their horns in Canada and the United States when they approach Level crossings.

  • No, you misunderstand. They sound their horns constantly whether there's a level crossing or not! Even in the old west.

  • Ok thank you

  • LOL! They don't sound them constantly, it just seems that way. They DO sound them quite a distance from the crossing warning of their approach, depending on their speed. Most of that "non-stop" whistleblowing is in the movies and in D.C.

  • I thought maybe it was because the driver could never ben certain of how many open or unprotected crossing there would be so sounded the horn constantly. And as some people have the attention span of an insect, it's possible they can forgot their brain acknowledged a train approaching 20 seconds ago

  • @MickeyLove01 only in movies, they only sound when approaching crossings

  • @MickeyLove01

    Because train horns are cool

  • @CuseRecorder Yep

  • @MickeyLove01 The FRA requires them to blow their horn at grade crossings, and it is recommended when approaching any sort of "distraction" such as animals, people, other trains, etc.

  • @iceman977th At last! A proper answer

  • @MickeyLove01 Because it's safe unlike your country!

  • @Megahammerheadshark I doubt you've ever been to England.

  • @MickeyLove01 I doubt you've ever been to America!

  • @Megahammerheadshark Many times.

  • @MickeyLove01 Then I think you should know what the horns are for.

  • @Megahammerheadshark I think you are misunderstanding something here. View all the comments and come to your own conclusions if you like, however, perhaps I'm trying to get an insight into strange american behaviour. For example, applauding themselves when they win something, etc..., interspersed with English sarcasm to boot...

  • @MickeyLove01 They don't "constantly sound their horn." It's just that where they're most likely to be seen and recorded, they are often near either a level crossing, a blind curve, or a tunnel, all of which may require a horn to be sounded.

  • That crossing is awesome.

  • why is it on a path?

  • Because the path links the main roads.

  • I really love this crossing!XD If you listen closely to the horn at around 0:10, the loud, distorted noise it makes really shows how lod it must be under that bridge.

  • I was looking at the Google map. Is there a high school nearby? It appears from the map there is. Do students walk to school along this path?

  • Yes there is a high school nearby and students use it to go to school and back home.

  • Fair Lawn High School. 1,500 students. The school is right in the middle of town. basically no busing. So 99% of the students have to get to school by themselves. Lots of them walk or ride their bikes to school through that crossing which is under NJ route 208. That is why there are gates.

  • "Lots of them walk or ride their bikes to school through that crossing which is under NJ route 208. That is why there are gates."

Have there been any accidents where students tried to get around the gates and across the tracks but failed?

  • No accidents.

  • That crossing is really awesome. However, the train's horn is insanely loud when it is blown under that bridge. I know because I was there, and it nearly blew my ears out.

  • I agree. Everytime I hear the train I cover my ears.

  • The crossing itself is really cool, though. It's just that being partially under a bridge means that every train coming from the east(or south, kind of hard to tell) will be even louder than normal.

  • What line is this on, the Main Line?

  • yup

  • NICE

  • "World's smallest crossing with gates."

  • Here's a list of practices:

    1. Silence the bell once the gates completely lower.

    2. Silence the bell when the gates begin to go up (following the passing of the train.)

    3. Cease ringing when the gates reach their horizontal position, and start ringing again when the gates go up, and cease ringing when the gates return to their vertical position.

    4. Ring the bell throughout and stop ringing when the gates are in their vertical position.

  • Thanks, George.

Train horn WAY too late - unless this is sound delay caused by YouTube.

If this is Pedestrian Crossing, pedestrian bell SHOULD keep ringing for blind people.

PRR seemed never to have bells with grade crossing signals.

  • I don't know why, but my favorite practices are the fourth one and the first one. Also, my favorite type of bell for crossings are the mechanical bells, and I HATE electronic bells.

  • A fortune needlessly wasted for signals and gates for a pedestrian walk?

    Train blows horn? Ridiculous.

Pedestrian bell is not working? Those bells are FOR pedestrians!!

Why is sound way behind video?

    Nice video. Thanks

  • The bell works only when the gate comes down.

  • However, some AWDs silence the bell once the gates fully lower, others keep ringing the bell throughout.

  • True. It seems that the majority of all crossings in New Jersey do that. By the way, that is an awesome crossing!!! I have never seen such a small railroad crossing that actually had lights, bells, and gates!:) Is that along a bike path or a walking path??

  • Using My Horn Senses that was PL42AC 4004

  • That seems kind of stupid and a waste of money. Anybody could have just walked around the gates.

  • I wonder why that train was set up as Comet I, Comet IB, I, and IB?

  • Great Video. I thought that was a pedestrian Crossing.

  • It is a Pedestrian crossing.

  • That is small....

  • dang inever seen gates that small

  • They are small because it is a pedestrian railway crossing.
