I know a popular band that is making a "monster" song that is influenced by Walt Whitman and this song. Actually they are using this exact name for the song.
Walt Whitman, the yankee supermen, always enjoying the great US outdoors, feeling everything, watching everybody at work, writing on them, the body as boosted by the US nature is more important than the soul, the beauty of the Americans' body (specially men) when transformed by the US nature, the cult to the vigour of the Americans, the belief in development as future, by the "practical invention" of the Americans as oppossed to the debased Europeans, an excessive poet with poems as "files".
Look up a song called This city is hell by a band named plaid and play these two videos at the same time. I think it brings a whole new depth to to this verse. Tell me what you think.
You should make this for the entire song of myself, really awesome foice, fits perfectly the way whitman would or should pronounce it, really good work :)
1,000 individuals can read this, every 1 in that 1,000 will give new meaning to that audiance. Who is to say that there is only one way. "You shall listen to all sides and filter them FROM your self."
There's this unnecessary menacing, determined quality to his voice that doesn't fit the text even obliquely. Yes, Whitman is truimphant, but not because he's trying to overcome adversity...his is a triumph of broad-minded acceptance and natural ease.
I've listened to this a couple of times and I don't think the reader gets the meaning of this poem. The text is joyous not the narration of Star wars!
That may be your opinion, but I strongly disagree with you. Poetry is more than words and syntax it is trying to convey an emotion or a thought with words and phrases.
And on the proper side of things, that is why we use punctuation--it allows you to read it properly and not in some unbroken stream of the mundane.
I agree with you. I read this poem at State competition in forensics and took 1st place. This orator sounds like he's bored to death. But it's all in the ear of the beholder.

when recited his poetry seems less embodiable.
I grit at such repugancy. leaving only exception to his
voice, which belongs to us.

Ah, Whitman, the quintessential and iconic American poet, and yet, a gift for all the world.

A bit too determined sounding is right...
sounds like Dwight Schrute from 'The Office' is narrating.

It's like he's an overdub for the Klingon warship.

I like it, it has strength and it is done in the style of the time.
The reader sounds strong and condifent.
its way ahead of all the other youtube versions.
A good educational work.
Poetry and verse are subjective and in the ear and heart of the listener.

I think it is just meant to sound powerful and triumphant. Use your imagination; work with the reader.
