Nice editing, lol. Wonder how many times he had to try before the 8 finally sank... I've seen people sink the 8 on the break from many different positions and they all hit the apex ball first. You're better off doing it that way because trying to hit the second ball as shown in this video is more likely to make you scratch on the break than anything else.
@oPod striking the cue ball low will stop the scratching. i feel it is better to break with the cue ball off the side rail about 1 and a half to 2 balls widths. again, less chance of scratching, adding a low hit on the cue ball, even lower chance
@oPod You're a baboon. The only thing different from what he is saying is one might try a 1/4 tip of inside english with the draw. That is the highest 8 on the break percentage shot available. If the breaker has a strong break the worst case is a wide open table. The only reason to break from another position is if the place has a rule about break position (similar to the D in snooker).
I know in English pool if you pot the 8-ball on the break it doesn't count as a win. You either re-break or spot the black. Was reading the rules the other day.
I think other people have pointed out similar rules below.
So really this is pointless unless the people you play don't know the rules?
In my experience I will break from the same position onto the 2nd ball only when the rack was loose and I have done very well in pocketing balls and making the 8 in. I was told to hit the 2nd ball when you get a loose rack ? Anyone have any thoughts about that? Thanks
@blindfoldsolving lmao dude,, listen to the very first part of this video.. where he says according to the APA league, if you make the 8 ball on the break you win.. geez
@wia729 4.8 From BCA rules: "8-BALL POCKETED ON THE BREAK
If the 8-ball is pocketed on the break, breaker may ask for a re-rack or have the 8-ball spotted and continue shooting. If the breaker scratches while pocketing the 8-ball on the break, the incoming player has the option of a re-rack or having the 8-ball spotted and begin shooting with ball in hand behind the head string."
Tom is a great guy! Weather he is in comp or just doing a show, he is nothing less then a perfect gentleman. Thank you Tom and the apa for all of your wonderful tips. "Keith O'Dell Sr"
I played in a tournament a few months back. There were wear marks in all of the 25 tables going from the second diamond to the second ball back in the rack. It was unbelievable how many people do that break.
A guy broke that way against my teammate and made the 8, I played the game after and hit the lead ball from just left of the head spot and made the 8.
I've witnessed a guy making the 8 three racks in a row. That's impressive.
I used to use this break, but hadn't used it in a while so before going out to play pool this weekend I watched this video for a refresher. First game of the night I made the eight on the break! The last game of the night I did it again! Twice in one night!
Tom Rossman is known as "Dr. Cue," and he is probably best known for his regular appearances on ESPN's "Trick Shot Magic" competitions. One common trick shot involves shooting a ball to the opposite rail, and catching it in a cup. So this is a much-practiced maneuver for him. I'm sure it's not easy, but he does make it look easy.
@hidemysocks When first heard that, I was like I have to comment on this. But of course, there's always another persons who notice these childish things.
In ireland we play UK Pool (or reds and yellows) and you can only break from within the D to eliminate this "trick". But if you do manage to pot the black and nothing else you do win cuz it's much more unlikely. Doessuck if you've paid a euro or two and you never get a shot.
Depends on what league and what rules they follow. Our league, 8 on the break gives the breaker the choice to re-spot the 8 and keep shooting, or re-rack and break again. Most leagues give you the win, and the old "drunken bar rules" say you loose. But why penalize the breaker with a loss when it was obviously a great break.
@connormd104 coz these rules were made for bar tables where u pay for one game.. so the longer the game - the better.. so a weak break makes the game longer.. dunno, just thinking about it, maybe that's the reason
That's actually exactly the reason. Why pay 50c or a buck to get one ball back? It's a win or it's a loss. Besides, you dont see much 8 ball on coin op tables anymore, unless people have money to burn. It's usually one-pocket or straight pool or some other lengthy game so you can get the most out of your money.
Just shut up, it's common knowledge even if you don't play billiards/pool, my 12 year old cousin know's that. I don't play/watch certain sports like bowling that I know special rules about.
man this is so incredible. and thanks for the near-enough HD Quality videos. this is a brilliant tip. the 8-ball break. i cant wait to try it next time i play!
i did this for the first time yesterday and i was sooooo happy!! everyone thought i lost and they were laughing and hi fiveing the other guy and i grabed the rule book and showed them they were wrong!
Yeah, thats a cool move.. I learned from watching Willie MOsconi how to shoot the cue ball all the way down the length of the table and make the cue ball go air born and come flying back torward me and catch it! lol... now thats a good one! ;)
Dr. Cue missed it on the first try... you can see that the 13 ball was behind the 1 ball when he was about to show us the trick... but when he actually took the shot, suddenly the 6 ball is behind the 1. So he had to do some camera shot splicing after re-racking for another try. For all we know he took 15 shots to do that... He should have memorized where the balls were in the rack so he could have made it look effortless, lol.
My bad, I should have read that... it's still pretty impressive in 3 tries. I still think though, he should have taken the time to make it look like he did it in one, lol.
I can see why you say that but it would have REALLY looked like we were trying to pull the wool over peoples eyes. Not our style. Nothing to hide here.
Note: Make sure the back of the rack is tight as well, the ball in the middle back row is the one that hits the back rail and then makes contact with the 8 ball pushing it toward the side or corner pocket.
This TOTALLY works! I have only been playing since January and just recently became a 3 in APA. I have been trying this break for the last few weeks and actually made the 8 on the break during my match last Monday! Very exciting. Thanks Dr. Cue!!!
no, Sargeld is wrong... yes, you do win if you put the 8 in on the break. You lose if you scratch on the break, whether the 8 goes in or not. After the break, of course, a scratch is just a scratch and the 8 has to go in last.
I don't think I said anything different than that... lol. Most people play by the same rules that the APA uses. So I'm not sure why you said anything, but I think what I said covers it pretty well. Thanks! lol.

damn you have some good eyes. you are right. when he's explaining the 13 ball is the second ball. when he actually shoots the 6 is the second ball. good catch.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
The biggest problem now with 8-ball is that it's not an official game. I've witnessed countless arguments over whether a person loses when they scratch or foul when shooting the 8, whether to put the ball behind the line or ball in hand after a scratch, whether there's an open table off the break or not. It's all annoying.
I like to play 9-ball because a) it's more challenging, and b) there's one set of rules, if you don't like them, don't play.
In APA 8-ball you don't lose if you scratch on the break. Your opponent just plays from the kitchen. -If you scratch on the break and sink a ball, the balls stay and open table- If you make the 8 in the wrong pocket or sink the cue ball and the 8, you lose. If you miss the 8 completely or miscue for a technical foul, then your opponent gets ball in hand. Every APA player is given a rulebook.
in 1820 a man named fredrick osloft one day he was working in his lab until a ghost came by and killed him the next morning fredrick was nowhere to be seen 100 years later two boys went in the lab as a dare the boys where never seen again where aparently murdered now that u have read this comment tonight when u go to sleep the two boys and fredrick will come and murder you but you can stop this by posting this comment on 5 other videos by? midnight im sorry i relly hate these things
thats wicked casue at the pool hall here if you do that you win the pot which is only like 6 doillars or so but still i would like to say i have won it!!
Back in the early 80's a friend and I went every Sunday to a bar and shot 8 ball. The owner showed us how to make the 8 ball on the break,
Put a quarter in the pot before every break. Every week for like nine weeks he or I would pocket the 8 ball on the break. A few times we sank it twice in a day.
me and my friends used these tips in january, ever since weve made the 8 ball in at least once every 10 games, probably a hundred times or so!!! great vid here
I'm half blind and I can make the 8 ball on the break. without a break cue. Putting the ball two ball lengths from the second diamond works. I prefer the right side though. I also drove the 8 ball through to the corner pocket once. Don't ask me how.
you have to bee one of the stupidest ppl in the world you just watched a video on it and you asked that question.... maybe practis or suck it up and play a full game
If you were listening in the video, Dr. Cue stated that in APA (American Pool Players) rules, pocketing the 8 ball on the break without scratching results in a win.
Can someone please tell me, I thought one can ensure an immediate win by pocketing the number 9 ball ONLY in nine ball. However in the game of 8 ball, wont pocketing the number 8 ball make one LOSE? why would anyone in their right mind would learn how to pocket the black ball first? can someone please let me know. was it because of different rules?
is not true, really are two videos, Look at the position of the balls before breaking when you focus and give pause when going to pull, this summer the 6 after 1 but before I was in last position of the right ..
We've mentioned this alrady in the comments for this video. Concerning the 13/6 switch. We edited the video so as to illustrate the point. It took Dr. cue only 3 trys to make the 8, which is pretty impressive.
The eight on the break is stupid and is not an actual game and should not be a win. Just stop it back up and play an actual game !

I potted the black a good few times on the break. it's exactly rare though is it?

I'm half blind and I can make the 8 ball on the break. without a break cue. Putting the ball two ball lengths from the second diamond works. I prefer the right side though. I also drove the 8 ball through to the corner pocket once. Don't ask me how.

Thanks for the tip, now I can make it off the break a lot.

you have to bee one of the stupidest ppl in the world you just watched a video on it and you asked that question.... maybe practis or suck it up and play a full game

However in the game of 8 ball, wont pocketing the number 8 ball make one LOSE? why would anyone in their right mind would learn how to pocket the black ball first? can someone please let me know. was it because of different rules?
naldchow 2 years ago
This is using APA rules. In BCA/Pro rules the 8-on-the-break rule does not apply

For all rules clarifications, please consult your APA Team Manual or your local APA League Operator.

A lot of people spot the 8-ball if it's sunk of the break, and allow the player who broke to shoot with an open table.
drewfla 2 years ago
yea ive heard of that. thats just different rules. this is an APA rule i guess.

is not true, really are two videos, Look at the position of the balls before breaking when you focus and give pause when going to pull, this summer the 6 after 1 but before I was in last position of the right ..
fremin001 2 years ago
They even say "two" in the video, making it obvious don't they?...

We've mentioned this alrady in the comments for this video. Concerning the 13/6 switch. We edited the video so as to illustrate the point. It took Dr. cue only 3 trys to make the 8, which is pretty impressive.

Another 8-ball break last night. That makes 6 on that table now I think. Used this technique every time. Good explanation here.

numbr1hater 3 years ago
It only took him 3 tries. Amazing!
