  • @tc2595...This is the correct driving style for a Detroit powered truck fitted with a RTO915 trans...this does not show "disrespect" at all this has a close ratio overdrive RoadRanger and this is how I did it 38 years ago and it worked for me and whoever I drove for agreed..drive it like you hate it..the 871 was designed to be driven in the torque band around 1750 rpm to 2150..

  • fuck that cab is tiny

  • farrrk! talk about some shit. you drove the old girl well mate, a credit to the men and women of days gone by. I grew up with dad driving a D5N Dodge, 6V53 and a 10speed R/R. Then he got a White Road Commander, 8V71N and 15 Direct. When i started i got into a T-Line Atkinson, 6V92T and a 10speed Spicer. For the wankers who think you're racing gears in the COE, that wasn't even close to how fast i used to pump through the Spicer.

  • That,s an awesome bit of shifting mate, fast, smooth, and accurate..... wish I could do as well. The old Detroit sounds great too. Thanks for the video..

  • Yes the 8v92 was what I drove! it had a blower and a turbo feeding into the blower, 475 hp and burned a gallon of oil a day but had power big time! and you had to make em sound like a truck!

  • real truck right there

  • it's a fuckin two stroke you dumb cunts!!!!

  • good ol donkey

this is one of the trucks that drivers drove

  • your probably a nice enough dude though.

  • piece of shit 318 2 stroke GM pulling 42 tonnes, fuck that. cowboys like you were the reason i got out of the game after 30 yrs inter/intra state dating back to comet and kwikasair days when 2 strokes, 892TTA, were the ducks guts, if you had no idea. get a cat or a cummins at least if ya gonna post something decent up, oh and yeah forget the KW badge. i also notice you were parked on the grass hey, them oil stains are unsightly on the road surface, especially out the front of your own residence.

  • Seems like a idiot dude

  • Wtf dude

  • this is not car to drive fast

  • Comment removed

  • Good pot stirin only way to drive the ole 71 or any 2 stoke detroit like to see some of these sooks drive the ole gal they be bouncin and sootin on the hill sayin this don't go hahahahha or the dude down the bottom sayin what a work all day thank god for the auto well go drive ur auto piss sounding shit hunk that u can't hear ya girl straight out of the academy for sooks.

  • Oh man, for a European it is really hard to get used to these seemingly high revs. In Germany for example I've never seen a 2-stroke diesel truck. Being used to 4-stroke diesels, the rp/m seem so high!

  • @BernhardRottweiler its isnt revving that much more than a four stroke it just sounds that way!

  • Hi Shaned8845. I think you are a very good driver of that rig. You clearly know what you're doing with a Roadranger. No gears missed, no brushed teeth. I just wish I could have come for a spin with you (you could have given me a pointer or two) Fuck the negative morons on youtube (you knew what you were getting yourself in for there) One question though, was this prime mover an old safeway's rig??

  • @Detroit8V92tta It could've been EX Safeways, but the general consensus seems to be that it was an EX Kiwkasair, when I bought it, there where TNT mudflaps on the front, that could mean anything I know, apart from that, I don't have a clue where it came from

  • @shaned8845 Ah Yep, an old Kwikasair. Then possibly a TNT running local. I was living in the Yarra valley in the 80's and there was a TNT the same as yours hauling apples for Bergi collstores. She'd hit the bottom of the hill at Wandin North grossing 38 tonnes of apples, flat knacker. She'd drop a stack of gears, lurch and twist the chassis, twin stacks blowing the coal. She'd waver on the governor all the way up the hill. Really spectacular stuff to watch. Lucky like you, never missed a gear.

  • Awesome driving there mate. As the saying goes with the old Detroits "drive it like you stole it". Again love it and great to see you getting the smack-down on these kids on here who've probably never so much as sat in a truck, let alone driven one on the highway.

    Drive safe - Arrive safe.

    Cheers

  • all I see is a guy who knows how to row a gearbox..most of you punks know nothing about the old 2 stroke detroits if you wanted any power out of them you had to keep em wound right up all the time. I would bet most of todays drivers couldn't get from one end of town to the other with one GOOD JOB shaned8845

  • gr8 vid nice truck mate

  • He's absolutely correct.

Got to keep that type of motor wound up into the governor to maximize hp, They don't tolerate lugging very well.

PS...I don't see a thing that he's doing wrong. I didn't learn in a classroom...I learned in the school of hard knocks and probably have more hard miles in reverse than you young critics have going forward. ~ An old timer,,,no AC, no big HP, no Max-brakes, piss poor roads, fingerprint every load and drive all day and all nite. You have it made today.

  • wat a pain in the ass

  • my uncle has a 77 kenworth with a 8v92 TTA and 9 speed direct drive, 3 spoe steering wheel and the big kw accelerator pedal and you can drive it like that.

  • Jeez stick came gadflies Brazilian

  • Ur drivin; is just fine cob, I wonder if any of these clowns have driven a 2 stroke GM or would even know they existed.... nothing wrong with being quick, especially in today's fucked traffic, would love to see the aforementioned wankers even try to go close, HAHAHAHA!!!!

  • Shane my friend let me tell you something mate. I use to drive an old White Road Boss. Very much with the same running gear as your old Kenny mate. And the way you Changed those gears mate. Bloody well reminded me of the way I use to drive the old Bossman. Smooth as BLOODY ICE my friend. From an old school Driver who goes back to the twin stickers hahaha your sweet in my books mate.

  • A great truck, and a great driver

  • @ms00013. as an interstate driver you an idiot. and you know nothing about trucking old school. the motor as to keep the rpms up to run right. its and 8v71 detroit rated at 318 hp. ask any OLD SCHOOL driver and they will tell you that you had to keep a 318 in high rpms. go back to school you rookie

  • fajny sprzęt

  • Sexy legs jajajajaja

  • Is that a Kangaroo rack up front?

  • Great video. 8-71 and 15 speed OD go together perfectly. You need to keep GM going to get best performance. Clearly some of the viewers have no idea about how these things work. Top stuff.

  • Yeah i agree with ms0013 there is no way in hell i would give you a truck driving job, not the way you just drove that kenny, you clearly have no respect for your gear.

  • @tc2595 Again, another one who doesn't have clue, i will ask you what am i doing so bad that makes you think I'm abusing MY truck, there is no grating of the gears, no shock loading of the drive line, gearstick is not being forced, you clearly have no idea, and the only good thing about Braidwood is it is a good spot to take a piss

  • @shaned8845 Dinna let these near-sighted wankers get your dander up mate...The only thing you did wrong was to not give that old Jimmy the had run she was begging you for :-)

  • @shaned8845 I never siad that you were hard on your truck, i was trying to imply that you were driving quick. I no the truck was tare weight but i think that you were still driving quick. And yes i do agree Braidwood is a shithole.

  • @shaned8845 Why are so many of the trucks over there in AU still running Dayton type hubs and wheel assemblies ? I know they're somewhat stronger than the Budd type...but, sheesh...they're a time waster to get the lug nuts torqued just right so that the rim will run, at least somewhat "True"

(straight) to keep the tire wear down. Can you shed some light on this for me ?? Do you still have this COE KW ??

  • @TurbinePower69 Alloy 10 stud "bud" type wheels are mostly used now, spider hubs and wheels where used on pretty much every make of truck and trailer so you could always find a spare that fits,

We don't have a truck stop network that have the level of service that you blokes have, so if your traveling out of town you will be EXPECTED to change you own flats, spiders only have 5 or 6 nuts and don't require a torque wrench and are much lighter rim to get into spare wheel holder

  • @shaned8845 Thanks Shane, Over here, "budds" were predominant in the western half of the country, even back in the 50's..where, the Dayton type ("spiders" as you call them) was found in the eastern half up until the late 60's / early 70's when the "Budds" gained rapid acceptance, especially in OTR use, though the "Daytons" continued to be favored, especially in construction (dump & lowbed use). I use to put a coke bottle or can right next to the tire & tighten it til it was "true" while turning.

  • @TurbinePower69 Drivers changing wheels is going the same way as 2 stoke diesels and gear sticks, some "drivers" have never done either. All I did when fitting Dayton (never heard of them referred as that) rims to hubs is count the amount of thread exposed on the stud and wind the nuts on evenly, This method was good 99% of the time, still quicker that torquing up a ten stud IF you have a torque wrench.

I sold the COE after I cooked 8v 71, didn't have the room to put the truck or $20000 to fix

  • @shaned8845 Hi again, I can relate to your situation over there...as far as modern day "clueless" so called "truck drivers" are concerned..we've "overrun" with them here, especially in the last 10 yrs or so...Scary !! What happened to your Detroit ? How did you "cook it" ?? Did the heads crack between the valve seats, or ?? Where abouts do you live over there ?...I'm moving over there before the end of August...IF, I can get out of here before they pull another 9-11, and stop traveling.

  • @shaned8845 Me again...was just reading some of the earlier comments on here...and found where you said that you sold your COE to " the bloke who owns the Bandag Bullet "....over there in AU. Are you referring to

Adam Guiffero ( I know...I spelled his last name wrong..forgot how he spells it.).....He & I were e-mailing back and forth for a bit....back about 6 yrs ago or so....does he Still have the "Bullet" ?? He told me (back then) that he was building an E-9 Mack (V8)..did he finish it?

  • @shaned8845

What a work all day long, thank god for the automatics.

  • @shaned8845 hahahahha up the poofs mate hahahahah & she's a drivers truck mate & ya done the old girl well you could drive for me any day mate BRAIDWOOD don't ya mean a big shit hahahaha

  • @shaned8845 gotta love rocklea hey!!!!

  • @tc2595 what would you know about driving trucks? I fix trucks for a living and there's no mistreatment of gear present in this video.

  • @tc2595 its an 871GM you idiot thats how they are meant to be driven. There is nothing wrong with shanes driving. Would be funny to see you drive one seems your a big expert

  • Hey Shane, your steeringwheels on the wrong side, lol. Hello from the USA.

  • Shaky camera, anyone?

  • As an interstate driver.... your a dick. Its not a race car ya fool. You are the reason we have a bad name in the public eye. How much work will you get after this little vid???

  • @ms00013 I've got plenty work, thanks for asking

  • @shaned8845 Brings back some memories mate, I used to drive one of these for TNT. Your driving style is the only way I did it, or saw anyone one else drive them. Hold it flat and keep changing gears. The old 2 stroke GM's are all revs and no torque, not like todays motors.

  • @O2bacaptainwombat Not entirely true my friend about the " no torque " & the 2 cycle GMs / DD's...is a myth, actually. Before Cat, Mack & Cummins started applying turbocharger technology to their big inch 4 cycles..the NA 2 cycles would walk ALL over the 4 strokes..including on the grades. Fact is, the 2 strokes produce as much torque over a BROADER power curve than the 4 strokes. What "appears" to be less torque, is really a MUCH shorter, USABLE Stroke length = less Piston spd = less inertia.

  • @ms00013 That's how you're supposed to drive a Jimmy, you dumb fuck!

  • @ms00013 its got a 2 stroke diesel engine you idiot. they're built to rev that hard. get an education before passing judgement.

  • as a interstater, you must of never drove a old jimmy,if u did you would know that ya gotta get up em

  • @ms00013 Are you kidding? What's he doing wrong??

  • esta usted muuy chaqueto piensa q es de jugete amigo cuando quiera le enseñamos amanejar bien aca en mexico wuey

  • ahh you can deffinately tell its a detroit for two reason the hump in the first 10 seconds or so of the motor runnin before it smothes out when the huffer picks up and the typical cant run through the bottom fast enough and gotta let er catch up in the top

  • What does the Overdrive? I have no idea, never drive it... good vid and a nice Truck..

  • @69catpower An overdrive usually refers to a type of gearbox, output speeds are greater than input speeds when selected, all are pretty much overdrive now, back when the truck was made not so common

  • @shaned8845 Ah OK I understand...Thanks for help.Hope you still fine.No Burning no float under or Hurricans...

  • Man, those narrow cabovers look claustrophobic...!

  • shaned8845 Liked the video! I thought you were doing a fine job shifting gears . Hope everyone is safe from the flood waters. God bless from North Carolina , U.S.A. !

  • @mtnfordman Thanks for your kind thoughts, the floods have caused some havoc and will continue for months as the water travells south thru inland Australia

  • OK, I am a total noob here, but..... right hand drive in an American truck?

  • @SakoTGrimes American sourced, Australian assembled, also modified to suit Australian conditions

  • @SakoTGrimes Australians Being a Former British Colony Drive on the left side of the road.

  • good stuff,go the jimmy!

  • @shaned8845 Greetings from the U.S. Love the way how you go through those gears; like a real pro! Good video my man! Love the Detroit!

  • Would I be right in assuming the old girl was on slant broomsticks? Gotta take your hat off to the men of the era when this would have been the duck's nuts to drive!! Fark that looks like a rough ride!!

Imagine being expected to hang onto this thru the Putty and up the old New England Hwy these days launched with a van full of fluff out of Comet, Kwikasair, AFE or Jetspress like the old days!!!!....... Funnily enough Id give anything to find a time machine and give it a go right now!!!!!!

  • @albie67 In what way??

There is no grating or crashing, how am I rough?

  • @shaned8845 i think hes confusing rough shifting with being quick. excellent job!

  • @shaned8845 why did you sell it? I would have kept it

  • @caleb79843 I had no room to park it anywhere, or enough money tor another motor which was preatty much stuffed after I cooked it

  • @albie67 Looks pretty fuckin slick to me dude!

  • @albie67 I think you're hearing things. Sounds to me like Shane knows what he's doing...

  • nice truck great vid never driven a 15 speed looks confusing I know the pattern, driven 18 speed 13, 10, 9 cool vid

  • @tritty84 if it wasnt an overdrive box, the shift pattern is the same as a 10 speed, even the 10 speed overdrives had 4th and 5th back to front, thats how you tell if its an overdrive box, now the overdrives and double overdrives(13's 18's) have the standard shift pattern

  • Nice shifting work but very confusing. I guess its something you need to have a feel for. I drive an ordinary 5-speed pickup truck which is quite easy in comparison. Nice throaty sound from the 8V71.

  • i still have no idea what the hell is going on lol

  • cool

  • I drive a 1973 freightliner daily. Love it.

  • caminhão filé xique demais parabens !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Ahh the memories, the 871 and 15 o/d on 5.29 Rockwells, good for 118 @ 2150.. the cabovers I drove for Clarks refrigerated in the mid 70,s ..the truck I drove was an 871 T, 350 HP and when you dumped that clutch fully loaded and booted it all you could see in your mirrors was black smoke., the 2 stroke noise and the very distinct howl in fifth low range, no other box made that howl, into high range and keep it stoked, this was a "real" truck

  • niceee.......luv de way yuh rippin de gears!!!!

  • nice job bangin thru the gears!!

  • nice hi vis shirt do you work for the council

  • 萌え☆

  • nice clip , i used to have an 892 natural in a sleeper cab years ago, listening to that gm almost brings a tear to the eye, also 15 od, and hendrickson walking beam suspension ( i dont miss that :) ), i learnt in a cummins powered co, it was a major shock jumping into a gm :).

  • 100 kph @ 2100 that must be something like SQHD 5:29 or 4:88 rears. Our freightliner does around 60 with one of those gears, a friend of ours 75 pete with a 12v71 has 5:29s and it did 55 before the governor was turned up to 2600, now it does around 65-70.

  • thanks for ya reply m8 youv made my day as my father has past now and we only have photos of these rigs . BIG Cheers m8

  • Had a fair idea it was ex AFE by the bullbar m8

  • G,day Shand8845. My Oldman used to drive these beasts back in the late 70s for ANSETT FREIGHT EXSPRESS when i was about 10 year old. Is this old girl an ex AFE if so id love to own her.. Cheers Marshy

  • Yep ex AFE,

    Sold it in '07

  • i'm confused.... is this pretty much the same as a 10 speed, except there's a third range of 5 gears?

  • YEP.

  • Shane.

Man, those American over - day cab is sure small.....or you too big.

  • Both!!!

  • It has three ranges? I thought a 15 speed was the same as a 10 except you had a splitter for the high side.

  • It has 3 ranges, deep ruduction and low range (commomnly called middle box) sort of overlap, and then there is high range.

typically, it's driven the same as a 10 speed, with thye ability to be able to have extra low gears, including reverse

  • i remember when i was a kid(im only 15 haha) my dad used to buy the the deals on wheels and i can remember saying to my self i have to get one of these kenworths not even having a clue about wat it was but i still love them! there so unique! swap for a kingswood? haha

  • nice slimline man, reminds me of the many Kenworths Safeway/Woolies had down in Vic. Pretty sure that they had em in other states aswell.

  • hey there shane ... all trucks in the tnt fleet were hired out to different departments "tnt equipment" owned the trucks and they hired the trucks to each department through the day ( kwikasair , comet, and many others ) i worked for tnt sea fast in melb years ago and we would get shuttle trucks for the day to cart containers to the wharf and had to return them by 6pm so they could go to sydney or adelaide that night .. just a bit of trivia for you

  • Yeah Thanks for that, it makes perfect sense

  • not a bad bit of vid .... is the truck an old tnt shuttle truck ?? looks by the bull bar that was next to useless .. nice memories tho

  • It could've been ex TNT, one old bloke told me he reckon's it was en ex Kwikasair( same mob).

  • Cool video mate.

I spesh like the walk around at the start, what a nice looking jigger!

hard to tell what the colour is tho, did u have her resprayed?

Lovely old things to drive but yeah my back was spasming thinking about the ride lol

I've spent some time in FMs with the I shift and no way in hell would I go back to the old days..it's just a same the newies don't have the same character huh

  • Thanks mate.

It was red, cant remember the exact name.

The newies are alot easier to drive, almost to the point of boring, and no . . they don't have any character!!

  • My uncle used to drive a cabover with an 8- 71 natural in it , he'd call it "the toboggan" cos the thing went like fuck off the hills , but going up was a diifferent story...nice old rig mate

  • That's preatty much is the perfect description for a 8V 71N

  • fuck me looks like you could do with some cab suspension.cool vid.

  • Industry standard in the 70's, no trailer didn't help, If you couldn't handle the rough ride, you weren't a truck driver

  • the old "grey ghost" hey?

  • no but my dad drove an SAR with an 8v92ta

  • Did you double-clutch anywhere? Nice work;)

  • Looks like Southside of Brisbane. Was that Ipswich Rd?

  • Yep!

  • She sure sounds the business. Looks like you had fun conducting business with it. For a moment, when you walk up to the truck from behind, I thought she might have been a Leader. I didn't read the description carefully enough at the start. Nice video.

  • Now that is HOW it is done, not like these BTO clown, again great vid mate.

  • That's a lot like my 1st KW except mine was a '75 with a sleeper.

Same engine, same bullbar, same torsion bar, even cooked the engine like you (did a water hose).

Repowered it with a 475 HP 8V92TA, boy did that make a difference!

I don't know about you, but I can't say I miss those early short wheelbase rough riding cabovers all that much, not as a daily driver anway.

  • I don't miss the ride either, and while the jimmy sounds good, it would also be good to hear the radio from time to time.

  • Looks like a fun truck to drive. Sorry to hear about the story... Bourbon sometimes helps in some bad situations. At least it did for me.

  • loved every second of that ride!

nice truck mate.. what did ya do with it?

    ex-safeways truck?

  • It's a long sad, sad story.

The GM decided to grab a coupla bearings after it got hot because stupid here didn't notice the horton hadn't kicked in, didn't have 25k to fix it properly (motor, radiator, t/bar suspension) so I sold it as parts to the bloke who owns the bandag bullet.

When you see he's transporter, your actually looking at THIS cab.

I took me a while (and lots of bourbon)before I could sit here and watch this.

  • . . . .and also A lot of EX interstaters seem to think it was an ex Kwikasair

  • ohhh ok... I remember them trucks.(like ya could miss em)

As a kid.. I never could work out that name..lol
