  • I grew up listening to Boby Womack but it took me until my adult years to understand the quality of music I was listening to all those years.

  • A piece of REAL music written for my little MICAFRO.

  • Dont make soul ballads like this anymore.

  • Perfect..!

  • Oh my, that was convincing...incredible forget commercial. Wish there were less commercial and more incredible artist like back in the day.

  • Classic...

  • genius is right

  • He will forever be a part of R&B history, cause the direction it is going now, it will all be history in a few years... Black ppl need to get back to making soul music, music from the soul.. not from the record execs...

  • I love Him!!!

  • thanks for uploading this beautiful music of Bobby....wow really blows me!

  • We all need someone or something special.

  • he's on my list of under-rated singers; along with Teena Marie, TC Carson, Phoebe Snow, Gloria Lynne just to name a few.

  • Man, Bobby Womack was feelin' it!

  • thumbs up if you think that music just died since 2000....

  • my generation is full of people who play music the old school generation was blessed with Musicians...not to say there are no musicians in the new school generation but if someone were tasked to raddle off the top 10 best musicians/artist from the old school you would have to debate the subject...you would be hard tasked to name 10 great artist from the new school...IM 22 YEARS OLD I WAS BORN JUNE 28th 1989 AND I THANK GOD EVERYDAY FOR OLD SCHOOL MUSIC

  • @musicEASEmyMind i hear ya on this one my brotha they do not make this kind of music anymore all i am into also is classic R&B Soul the best musicians of our time Mr Bobby Womack and he did play his own music instruments like the guitar oh my oh my how sweet it is on this song Bobby Womack Close To You! yes sah!

  • Got damn...i didn't want it to end

  • he ripped this song!!!!!

  • @C901HYDEPARK yesirrrr

  • beautiful version... much more passion inside his voice... magic... Bobby is pure Soul

  • ~~(*)~~

  • News flash, every culture has endured their share. Have the Jews not suffered? Or how about the Israelites? Or how about Islamic? Even the Irish have had their share. These are but a few. Each has its own influenced music with soul. The fact you say only black folks feel it shows how truly racist and ignorant you are...

  • @waytostoned News flash -- And the fact that no one EVER used the word "only" shows that you can't read. And I'm done with it. Everyone, please just enjoy this beautiful song. There is no reason to surround this beautiful gift from Bobby with a discussion about racism. Peace.

  • @vanessa4u4evr Thank you. Thats all I wanted. Color has nothing to do with feeling this song, he is just that good an artist. =)

  • It's True. No one can feel it like black folks. sorry..

But when we hear it I think we feel everything we overcame..It was tough for us

  • @musiclover77able Burt Bacharach worked with Dionne Warwick quite a bit during her earlier years of singing.

  • @blueBlackpurple I think that's an understatement.. Burt Bacharach and Hal David worked prolifically with Dionne Warwick...

  • @musiclover77able Thank you.

  • Certain segments of the guitar playing here reminds me of Curtis Mayfield's style.

  • @musiclover77able By chance do you know who wrote this song?

  • @musiclover77able Thanks for that info. I did not know the history of this song.

For some reason I thought Paul Williams may have done this song originally, but that

is probably because I thought he wrote some songs for the Carpenters. I could be wrong

    about that though. Thanks again.

  • Haha, I don't think anyone ever said the word "engineer" with so much soul.

  • ~ All I ever wanted was to be part of your heart, and for us to be together, to never be apart. No one in the world can even compare, You're perfect and so is this love that we share. We have so much more than I ever thought we would, I love you so much more than I ever thought I could. By the way you look at me I know that we will last. I hope that someday you'll come to realize, how perfect you are when seen through my eyes. ♥ you my beautiful spunky JD ~ xox ~

  • Bobby Womack is a great story teller what artist has that talent i feel his soulful emotional and experience in life back in that time! you go BOBBY !

  • A true original artist dressing up a classic[ putting gravy on it]

  • Classic,2nite in H Town,Bobby Womack live in concert,itz Goin Down

  • thank you gorillaz/fish tank for hookin me up ;P

  • Is anybody else mesmorized by the way that Bobby says "fall"?

  • This and Marvin Gaye's version of "Yesterday" are the best covers that I've ever heard.

  • @KrfNYC2 I would also include Al Greens cover of "how can you mend a broken heart".

  • music is music and that how it is .... this is just GREAT Music by a Very talented artist..Luv it Ij.Sr.

  • I gotta say this has gotta be one of the greatest male vocals I've ever heard (for those with no patience skip about 5 minutes in). Put on repeat it sounds better each time! Phrasing, note selection, time is mind blowing!

  • this is the shyt ya'll

  • Though the Carpenters were good; can't do it real justice without Black soul! Sing it Bobby! We make the best music on the planet, especially the Black American. Blues, Jazz, Soul, R&B, Rock n' Roll and Positive Hip Hop! Must be the melanin! Just saying though!

  • @Robmorgan144 What a racist comment. You do good music, but saying that is the best, just show your complex of inferiority. There's no best. There's music in it's wholeness. By the way, this song was composed by white people. I'm sure that Bobby Womack would find your comment ridiculous. Grow up.

  • @EnryMusica Racist?Ahh,maybe. But it's true.At least to us.Black soul is the best music.Old black singers of this era had more struggle than other people so they sung with more passion & emotion.

  • @thegreatcratesofsoul Yes. Black music from the 70's is the best! The only genre that I find to be truly timeless. That's probably because it inculded vocal abilities and styles that have never been found anywhere else.

  • I have listened to this song about 13 times on repeat and it's only getting better. Wow. Love your work Bobby. Legend.

  • I love this song.

  • you can not find songs like this anymore

  • Mr. Womack took that classic Carpenters song and put his own style on it.

    Great sound.

  • cant sing like this anymore but he still one of the best music artist out there.

  • Thanks for the memories Bobby I remember ,it was June 9TH ,my Birthday......my father went on a fishing trip, when he returned about 3 in the morning ,all the lights were off,and everybody was hugged up with somebody even my mother,we was scared as hell,he didn't say a word, he walked on by us,later he return after he went, and washed up...and said.... where did everybody go..... .....no one was left in the house, but me , my mom,and my cousin......the party was over

  • This is me! Bobby you are gifted! I Love You!!1

  • "Not commercial" back then meant "too black & raw". It is so Bobby that he would tell that story before doing what was called back then a "crossover", his OWN funky version of this classic Carpenter's song. "The Last Great Soul Man" is such an appropriate title for this true legend. From his days with Sam Cooke to "Across 110th Street", to "Harry Hippie" and beyond, the baddest left-handed guitarist in the business. Just listen to that guitar picking. Truly," The Last Great Soul Man"...

  • Bobby wil make you fall out the chair & slap the shit out of him WOW!!!!!!!!!

  • How can four people dislike this?!

  • I liked all Bobby's record!

  • @missjbb123 they do not know what good music is when they hear it i am 41 years old this is the best stuff too listen too

  • JUST ADORE THIS 9,27 MINUTES..magic and so moving me. gorgeous, sweet..beautiful

  • Dope!!!!

  • classic. : )

  • classic........... : )

  • man this song has taken me back to a day when it was all about living, loving and being apart of the beauties of life, instead of this comercial day where one has to do and think as what the media allows us to... well them... thanks bobbie

  • Your welcome! I heard Bobby do an interview some years ago and I told that story.

  • Finally I've found this song! I heard it sometime ago and forgot where I had heard it! Alright - I been in Love with this man for over thirty yrs plus years, and I will keep on Loving you - Bobby Womack.

  • @Boeing747fourhundred No, Bobby is right handed. Bobby said that he would sneak and play his dads guitar but he wasn't suppose to touch it.He taught himself to play left handed so he could look out the window and know when his dad came home so he wouldn't get a whippin. One day he broke a string and he thought he going to get a beating but his dad said "if you can play it, I won't whip you" so he didn't get a beat down.

  • @rlbanks6 Thanks so much for posting that Info! As a Fan you want to know what makes the person you enjoy Tick! Thanks again!

  • yo cnottagejr....if thats true thats the most beautiful thing ive heard in awhile

  • @Kevin198898 Don't blame today's musicians, blame the dollars that control music media.

  • I love this!!!

  • Badass. And dig those sunglasses and pants. Too cool.

  • he tears it up towards the end.

  • Womack is the FUCKIN MAN

  • I never heard this song but he is a Bad BOY!

  • Ich liebe Bobby Womacks Stimme! Erinnerungen an eine wunderschöne, unvergessliche Zeit........

  • Ben Emosivbe loves you.

  • I love it!! Reminds me of my dad. Thanks for adding.

  • ~Bobby...you'll always be a GIANT,and A LEGEND~ when it comes to just flat out Sannnnngin/Croonin!!! Be sure and tell your brother Cecil that I said "Hey"!!! Jesse Belvin Jr.

  • Dayum... that's all I can say...

  • Youtube David Ary for my cover of 110St. I can't wait to work with you Bobby. We are about to do something that has never been or ever will be done in music after us. May Jesus be with you in all and everything you do.

  • in 1972 i went to a bobby womack concert in miami. i got there 2 hours early and managed to catch the soundcheck. womack was crying for over half and hour before he had to go on, because he was desolate over his inadequacy compared to carl carlton. he was right to cry.

  • @sam1610 what inadequacy re you talking about? And who/where is Carl Carlton? I know who he is, but how many other people do? Did he have any more hits other than bad mama jama? Also, I know hits don't = talent, BUT

  • @oaklandonthecomeup yo i know most singers feel inadequate compared to carl carlton, so it's no insult to bobby. but still he cried for a LONG ASS time. and carl don't need no hits to cement his title, mang. check out his vid of him singin 'competition a'int nothin' from from the comfort of one swanky- STANKY ASS- basement. here's a heads up tho: competition AINT NOTHIN!...when it comes to ccarlton.

  • I met mr. Womack in the dallas Ft Worth airport once...very nice guy, super personality...great memory, great performer, song writer.

  • Thats right he's not comercial, he's the real deal!

  • Bobby was just as good a soul singer as his late mentor sam cook. You can easily hear a lot of sams influence in his singiing.

  • there are 4 thumbs down? How can anyone that have use of their 5 senses possibly not like Bobby Womack?.....SMDH

  • @jerrynuevo Someone who likes "Freida the Freak" who raps, "Baby I need 25 men a day!" Remember, some people don't know or like real music.

  • He should've sung this at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame especially the spoken monologue! He's come a long way since he recorded this too. :)

  • THE MASTER...

  • @swanson6666 Could not have said it any better! NOBODY can touch him!

  • great!!!!!!!!!!

  • Just a Jam!

  • 4:35

  • Bobby could read the phonebook and it would be soulful. One of a kind.

  • I swear to God, nobody can feel it like black folks can feel it. You making me CRY Bobby!!

  • @vanessa4u4evr That ain't true. The same God made black folks soulfull made a few white folks just as get down and do it righteous. Beauty, soul, musical genius--whatever--comes in all races and ethnicities. It's narrow minded to think nobody can get down unless they're one color or the other. Music and the arts proves your statement wrong. Soul is just soul no matter who's putting it down.

  • @vanessa4u4evr

    Yes, yes, lawd

  • @vanessa4u4evr I SO AGREE!

  • @vanessa4u4evr Black folks feeling it? I personally don't think color matters. its the soul baby its all soul...

  • @waytostoned It's not a matter of whether color matters or not, cause you're right, color doesn't matter. I'm black and my husband is white, so I'm not a racist. However, what does matter is the truth; and from my perspective, I stand by what I said. It's like acknowledging that white people are some swimming asses. They can out-swim black people on any given day. Doesn't mean that there are not black people or other races who aren't top dog in the field as well. It's just the truth?

  • The Source!

  • man my g-mama played this every sunday..

  • The moon and stars were all in line on this one. That song was waiting for Bobby to come along. Beautiful, Bobby.

  • Damn,I love this song, it so amazing!

  • execellent work, a real artist who has the

gift of music ... man keep up the good work B,Womack my mother turned me on to this music

  • This song bring back sweet sweet memorys

  • Perhaps my favorite monologue ever. So my truth...If I can get into it, it's commercial enough from me. Great record!!

  • Bleeding excellent!!

  • It's commercial enough for me.

  • This is a great song with an interesting message. And WHAT a version of the corny song Close to You. Great great job Bobby. I love this entire tune. I would love to perform this piece!

  • If songs could talk, they'd say, "pick it, Bobby".

  • So are you!!!

  • If a song could talk, they'd say, "pick me, Bobby".

  • I need more Bobby. This is too good.

  • mmm bobby can sang!

  • Thanx levabell for this video. I loved it back in the 70's/80's and somehow, I lost track of it. And I have never never forgot it. And now I found it posted. I tripped. I love Mr. Womack. He don't even have to sing, he can just talk. He's truly the "Poet".

  • Nobody today can sing that hard and sound that good.

  • well said

  • I believe you are right! Cause if you look at the other pictures of him- Album Cover of "Love has finally come", "Where do we go from here" and others- he's certainly holding it "lefty" style- Just like Paul McCartney

  • love him what a voice

  • 'and an engeneeeeeeeeee...eeeeeer'lol

  • bobby is the shit!.. he aint even gotta sing all he has to do is talk thru the song and it sounds jus as good!

  • sho you right. He got the kinda voice that whether he sing or talk, it's all good. I've seen him a few times in concert and he the man. He's one of my all time greats. Bobby, Frankie Beverly....can't be touched

  • i heard this song the other day and Bobby is 1 bad dude underated beyond belief.Listen how he says wine when it first come on.

  • This is very nice song. He gives us information about his life as an artist. He expresses his frustration with the industry. You keep doing what you do Bobby. I love your music. It speak truths. I guess that would not be commercial.

  • Simply one of the greatest vocalists ever!! 6:25-6:34 also 6:45 Come'on!! Who does this?!? :-)

  • @scootamem

I can't find a compliment for Bobby Womack. An awesome singer, a brillant guitrarist...His music is ethereal (can it be a compliment?). There are the best musos and all that egoistical bull but I put Bobby in the untouchables room.

  • @scootamem Others can't do it 'cause he's lived it. He's giving us his SOUL at that point in the song. The man is just a genius.

  • @scootamem I wouldn't have chosen those parts of the song but yeah...Bobby is SUCH An underrated singer. Top 10 to me, and maybe top 5.

  • nice song

  • One of the best songs of all time, long time listener first time poster.

  • Arguebly the best soul singer of all time!

  • my favorite singer.

  • WOMAGIC!!

  • The greatest storyteller of all time. No one can lay down vocals and play those stings like B. Womack

  • Bobby is still a dangerous man .....vocals as well as range off the charts and you can hear the Cooke influence......fire....just pure fire

  • one of the greatis singers ever lived

  • This is pure genius. Bobby absolutely owns this song.

  • Def. It sounds nothing like the Carpenters version.

  • CommerciaL, CommerciaL, CommerciaL, CommerciaLLLLL.....

    DO U BOBBY!!!

  • Bobby is a "Baaaaad Man".

  • One night after drinking with my best friends..we all ended up singing this on the ride home.. it was one of those moments in life..

  • When they say "you're not commercial" what they really mean is, "you make people stop, and THINK... and you KNOW we just can't have THAT!"

  • Comment removed

  • there is no male rnb singer today or yesterday that can sing like that! go bobby!

  • this shit is on FIRE!

  • fire is hot, and to me, this song is like great sex HOT!
