I can see where some atheists come from on this topic, because I used to have a problem understanding what exactly the Old Testament was saying. In my case, it was because I didn't read the passages carefully, and I didn't make any connection to the passages of any other books of the Bible. The fact is, there was no slavery condoned in the Bible, there was no rape or pedophilia or incest condoned in the Bible, and there was always a reason for execution, even if it's not apparent to the reader.

The exodus 21:7-11 gives a list of rights the slave woman has. She must be treated as a daughter if she is married to a masters son. She must not be diminished of her rights as a slave, that is food, clothing or marital rights. Granted, slavery of a kind was permitted by God, but just a cursorary reading of just this indicates that it is of a diffrent nature to what we typically imagine in the western 21st centrey.

I can see where some atheists come from on this topic, because I used to have a problem understanding what exactly the Old Testament was saying. In my case, it was because I didn't read the passages carefully, and I didn't make any connection to the passages of any other books of the Bible. The fact is, there was no slavery condoned in the Bible, there was no rape or pedophilia or incest condoned in the Bible, and there was always a reason for execution, even if it's not apparent to the reader.

Eventually, after there was enough genetic diversity, women were born, the same way men were. From the beginning, there was no need for incest. As you stated earlier, it wasn't the only recourse, it was a choice... a choice made by humans, before the flood. Humans created the situation, and transferring the blame only makes it worse.

Their study of the Torah, Talmud, and Jewish mysticism created an image of god that is radically different than the Christian or Muslim. It just means only one group is right (unless you are an atheist of course) which is what each group says about the others. @dazel10001 The passage mentions nothing about extreme distress and specifically says "And when a man selleth his daughter for a handmaid, she doth not go out according to the going out of the men-servants; " i.e. not just for a few years. Slavery is not "nearly the same as apprenticeships" for a start tradies don't own the children of their apprentices.

The exodus 21:7-11 gives a list of rights the slave woman has. She must be treated as a daughter if she is married to a masters son. She must not be diminished of her rights as a slave, that is food, clothing or marital rights. Granted, slavery of a kind was permitted by God, but just a cursorary reading of just this indicates that it is of a diffrent nature to what we typically imagine in the western 21st centrey.

@dazel10001 It's not very difficult to make the leap between being gay, and having gay sex. Whether they were caught or not homosexuality was a little bit more than frowned upon and it was another horror that any gay person would have to hide that fact for fear of death.
If you're having to be pedantic about the ambiguous phrasing of the passages, I think you've rather missed the point about the horrors of the Old Testament never being acceptable.
