I was under the impression that Compiz works under Gnome 3 Fallback mode. Some videos shows fedora users with Gnome 3 using compiz. The keybindings must be changed though since the superkey is used for launching the Gnome 3 shell. This is critical for me since I'm still using Mint 9 where everything works, but I'm tempted by Gnome 3.
The matte mode doesn't look like it is as good as the good ol Gnome 2 yet.
Another thing I'm wondering is if the Cairo Dock works withiut problems in Gnome 3?
@MrModulator Gnome 3 has not matured enough for me to start using it. I am still running gnome 2 on my desktop... I have only been running gnome 3 (Mint Lisa) in a virtual machine.
@LinuxSpatry I installed Mint 12. Compiz did work under Gnome 3 fallback. But when I then installed Cairo, the weird thing was that when I logged in with Cairo+Gnome+effects no panels at all were shown. It was like I was on a mac!
And nothing could be added.... As you said, it is not ready yet.
@MrModulator experimentation is key! I am happy that you tested it and reported your findings. I used Cairo Dock when I was new to linux... I happened to like AWN better, maybe if you were to uninstall Cairo and try AWN you may get a better result?
I'm a total Linux noob but I thought it might be worth mentioning that I was able to get Compiz working after I installed Cairo Dock. Once Cairo Dock is installed it allows you to boot to a new boot option called: Cairo-Dock (with Gnome and effects). When you boot to this option all the Compiz effects work along with Cairo Dock. However, you lose the Gnome taskbars at the top and bottom of the screen, or whatever they are called in Linux.
Currently only Firefox is working with the site. I've read a post about it somewhere. They are working on getting the site working with the other browsers.
I had to switch browsers. When I was in Chromium the extensions page did not recognize that I was using Gnome 3. Switched to Firefox and all was well..... Great video!
