I love this song... both the U2 and P.O.D. versions but the Charlton Heston clip at the start was pretty unnecessary and distracted from the music and over all message of the song.
this song is about the band playing the hardest, most edgy sound I have ever heard form them. Not one of the fails. The drumming: driving, relentless. The bass: varied, pacy, hard. The guitar: ah the guitar. does it sing or does Bono? who cares. this song is 24 years old, EL Salvador long forgotten, but every politial and musical element is a true today as it was then. and their passion to play it seems unabated. Gloria!!!

Best Version of Bullet the Blue Sky. The End of this song, Is just very different then the other Endings. This one Rocks. The Rattle and hum Version is cool too.
The lyrics were inspired by Bono's trip to Central America in 1985 as part of Amnesty International. He visited El Salvador, where he stayed with a group of guerillas in the middle of the mountains in the north of the country, which is where he got the idea for this song. "Mothers Of The Disappeared" also came out of that trip. (thanks, Alexis - San Salvador, El Salvador) GUAZAPA hills
Bring back the IRA and the 'troubles'.. U2 had better songs when they were pissed off about Northern Ireland... btw; this is the best version of their best song!
When I saw them on the PopMart Tour, they did a version of this song that laid over the noisy drums from Miami but it's not on the PopMart video. Anyone know where to find film or audio of that?
u2 at there best on this tour thats why the band released two dvds recording of the same tour, dont think they have ever done that.(slane castle-boston),
This is part of the effect for the song. On this tour it was about gun controls (or the lack thereof) in the United States and how any crazed loony can open a bank account and get a gun. That Mark 'he can rot in hell' Chapman robbed the world of one of it's finest people. It's about the notoriey someone like Mark Chapman beleved he could get by murdering John Lennon. It's hardly a f@#k up, it's rock & roll theatre at it's finest, imo.
does any1 know the artistic significance of using the n-word. I mean i understand why everything else is there and the message they're trying to get across, but what's the significance of that part?
@PatrickMc1nerney ..interesting, since both songs have a very similar timing and are both about guns, yet bullet moves down the minor pentatonic scale and stranglehold moves up, i wonder if it was deliberate in contrast to the attitude of nugget head being pro gun to U2 being anti - it adds more meaning to me that you bring up this similarity. but the minor pentatonic scale is even older than music as we know it as far as calling it a rip off .... don't mean to bug you, but it seems interesting
what a great solo by the Edge; what a powerful message too. i may look like an idiot for asking this, but who's the guy they show being interviewed in the beginning?
This multi-millionaire trashing America and the Second Amendment is as hypocritical as Goldman-Sachs trashing America... oh,wait, Gold-Filled-Sacks actually *DID* trash America... D'OH!

@leshager2009 the 3rd amendment has nothing to do with the 2nd. soldiers cant be quarterd in your house. doesnt mean the government cant take your guns away and terrify you by having soldiers guard the streets, threatning you while you dont have a gun. dont take away the amendment, try make it more difficult to get guns legally. besides, criminals will find ways of getting guns, maybe from mexico or canada. thats what stalin did. also, you cant force people to quarter soldiers even in wartime.
@rodjarB hope they pull it up on the rd and 4th leg of the 360 tour..saw them at the first leg and maaan i read before they didnt play this song i was a bit disapointed cause its one of my alltime favourites...but hey i saw ultraviolet :D
you take away our guns you take away our freedom... i am of course speaking of the 2nd amendment in the U.S. Constitution.... all men have the right to bear arms. besides, in illinois, you cant carry a concealed weapon.
@GQOfficial fascinating , do you know of the laws in other states .. concealed , not concealed etc , I would love to learn more of the american ways despite the fact that i have been there 17 times already.
well i know that in indiana you can carry a concealed weapon so i would move there if i was a gun enthusiast, but i like illinois because the area i live in has very nice weather and i also live by chicago... so yeah there's something i know about other states. i believe that illinois should get rid of the concealed weapon thing and that gun control is a terrible thing... because criminals dont listen to the law. but yeah thats cool your getting interested in america's state's laws
I love U2 and this song, but I think the anti-gun message they're trying to push here is the weakest of the issues they've tried to confront with this tune.
In the '80s and '90s it was really effective at addressing US military intervention and neo-fascist groups, and after 9/11 it was great at denouncing torture, but at this particular time period (early 2001) it just seems like gun control isn't as significant issue as the other ones this song has dealt with.
This is almost the only thing where U2's politic statements go wrong: If we deny people's permission to carry guns, we are making them an easy target for the tyrants.
Look back at history, people: What was the first thing Hitler did? He took people's fire arms away so they couldn't rise up against the government.
I'm not a war maniac and few years back I thought U2 was right about the gun issue. Now I think it's good thing to have a gun in case the government is going to make you a slave.
while the evil government idea is a little too far out, he's right about Hitler and everything. people have a right to have a firearm to defend themselves with.
"Guns are legal in this country because we are free. The US's most profitable export is grain you fool."
Yeah - free to buy arms at will - free to walk into shopping malls and colleges and shoot people dead. Free to declare illegal wars whenever you please. If that's freedom, you've got rocks in your head mate.
@cpa54 What kind of chills does he give you? Douche chills? Why doesn't "The Edge" also mention the shootings in Limerick and Dublin? Or the war the Irish are making against themselves in the North? He's a fake and a prick.
@mentalillnesstalking You never heard of a U2 song called Sunday Bloody Sunday, a song shouting out at the gunmen of the North to stop. You never saw footage of Bono singing that song in the Rattle and Hum movie - look it up, it's on YouTube. Especially wait for the speech in the middle.
You never heard of the song Please? (a song calling for an end to the fighting in the North) U2 never talked about Irish war, Irish peace? You need to study them more.
That's my Bono , getting all up in Your faces ! Never mind that this is the single best song U2 ever did. Never mind that U2 is thee best Rock Band there's ever been. Bono social statements also make a whole lotta sense and we all know it
I assume that Bono was raked over the coals and almost executed for his multiple use of the word "nigger"? Funny, I heard nothing about it in the media. hmmm.... I wonder why?
exactly masters. and theyre even using gospel music in the beginning, so it wouldnt make any sense to call the racist card
it was also a reference to patti smith's song - its about outsiders, people like lennon, joplin, hendrix, people who/or whose ideas werent fully accepted by society.
U2 have done more to raise awareness and support for good causes around the globe than ANY other musical act PERIOD! It's my hope, that one day we can all live in a world without poverty, disease, famine and above all violence. Keep it up Bono!!!
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
why does bono and this band always have to make stupid political statements. just play the music. the music isn't bad, probably better than avg. but his liberal demands and constant bothering of US gets old. go bother your own country for crap. come to the states and just play and shut up.
i love this!!! i think the elevation tour version of this song is so much better than any other tour past or present and i wish u2 would have came out with a live cd for the elevation tour.

That's my Bono , getting all up in Your faces ! Never mind that this is the single best song U2 ever did. Never mind that U2 is thee best Rock Band there's ever been. Bono social statements also make a whole lotta sense and we all know it
hewsonsgurl 2 years ago
It would have been cool if the audience had started into "Give Peace a Chance" at the end of the song.
jasonriggs 2 years ago
this is the best version of this song out there.

I assume that Bono was raked over the coals and almost executed for his multiple use of the word "nigger"? Funny, I heard nothing about it in the media. hmmm.... I wonder why?
Jitpring 2 years ago
Why? every Hip Hop Rapper says it all the time in there songs....
CFKMAN 2 years ago
because it's the lyrics of another classic song ;) i.e. see Patti Smith
dasgre0g 2 years ago
Because it's not racist you idiot.
Think of it like this...
John Lennon = black man
Mark Chapman = KKK
hence the phrase "rock and roll nigger"
MastersJunk 2 years ago
exactly masters. and theyre even using gospel music in the beginning, so it wouldnt make any sense to call the racist card
it was also a reference to patti smith's song - its about outsiders, people like lennon, joplin, hendrix, people who/or whose ideas werent fully accepted by society.

Charlton Heston's words there are precisely right.

U2 have done more to raise awareness and support for good causes around the globe than ANY other musical act PERIOD! It's my hope, that one day we can all live in a world without poverty, disease, famine and above all violence. Keep it up Bono!!!

This comment has received too many negative votes show
why does bono and this band always have to make stupid political statements. just play the music. the music isn't bad, probably better than avg. but his liberal demands and constant bothering of US gets old. go bother your own country for crap. come to the states and just play and shut up.

Bono wants to change the world, that's obvious. The best way to do that: music.
