  • Why didn't they make this song a single?

  • its a classic track, great lyrics

  • Urban Hymns is one of the best albums ever made in the history of music, easily stands up to anything in the 60's, 70's, 80's(?) for me.

  • I wish I could have this song tattooed to my ear drums so I never stopped hearing it.

  • Definition of VERVE

Insert picture of The Verve the band in dictionary.

1 archaic : special ability or talent

2a : the spirit and enthusiasm animating artistic composition or performance : vivacity

The dictionary definition barely keeps up with this band. Webster may need to amend the dictionary or add a third defintiion.

  • Is there anything we can do help make them more popular in the US? This is music of the highest order. The Verve is easily one of the greatest bands ever. Such a spiritual experience watching them perform. At least this video footage wasn't lost and have YouTube to help preserve these epic performances. British rock at it's finest. Long live King Richard!

  • @midkollen I too am embarrassed by what has become of our music scene while geniuses like Ashcroft and Neil Finn are appreciated around the globe except the western world. Maybe we need to put a headset on him, auto tune his voice, and flank him with 25 backup dancers! This performance is a thing of beauty!

  • @midkollen visit my channel, its solely devoted to pushing the verve and oasis's music to people on youtube. make your own channel, share the music yourself. glad to have you here viewing these songs

  • I totally love'em....

  • Bass player having a cigarette during the space and time of the music! ;)

  • too bad we'll never see 'em live again. They are absolutely amazing live.. I don't know where they channel that shit from, but it's awesome!

  • the thing is with this band they sound great live, unlike many "artists" today

  • One of the best gigs ive ever been to....they blew my mind...

  • The instrumental part is beyond description, wish the join again and play live songs like Gravity Grave, A man called sun, beautiful mind, etc...

  • What a live performance.

  • urban hymns!!!!

  • 100 percent american and proud to be. however, european rock, music in general, is superier to its american counterpart... but dont get me wrong... there is plenty of fantastic american music. just gotta sort through a bunch of shit to get to it.

  • The Doors!

  • nothing better than this

  • Magic.

  • keep on pushing cos i know its there, keep on pushing cos i know its there, keep on pushing cos i know its there

  • thanks richard for this song

  • Beautiful song, Urban Hymms is the best album ever made

  • love the verve!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! a storm in heaven and urban hymns are great albums..... richard is a genius and nick is amazing.....

  • legendary band.

  • I could careless where they're from I love em.

Even live his voice is amazing.

They have no "I'm a Rock Star" attitude they simply let their music doing the talking.

  • American and British music has their positives and negatives. It's true that we Americans have the Jonas Brothers, Nickelback, Taylor Swift and MCR but at least we don't have Take That or Culture Club or Westlife or the Spice Girls to deal with for God's sakes. And it's foolish to emphasize one country's music based on one or three bands where there is a lot more than meets the eye.

  • Nickelback's Canadian

  • And let's not discount the American bands of the 1970's-1990's that proved to have as much of an impact in Britain as they did in the US: Aerosmith, Alice Cooper, New York Dolls, Van Halen, KISS, Springsteen, Tom Petty, Allman Brothers, Ramones, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Creedence, Eagles, Blondie, Bob Seger, ZZ Top, Talking Heads, R.E.M, Sonic Youth, GNR, Motley Crue, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Faith No More, NIN, Jane's Addiction, the thrash four, Offspring, RHCP and more.

  • Most of the bands you mention have all admitted being influenced by the BRITISH INVASION....just sayin'.

  • Right. And what influenced the British Invasion? The six American artists I mentioned. And let's not forget Joan Baez, the Ronettes, Phil Spector and, of course, the artists from Motown, all Americans. Just saying.

  • Ill give you credit on the motown mention. They had influences.... Joan Baez? Are you crazy?Shes just a toned down Grace Slick. Robert Johnson was Zeppelins biggest inluence...that, combined with folklore and the history of "middle earth" made thier sound....Spector was brilliant, he was part of the "invasion", but he definitely didnt inspire it.I also like American music, but the sources/influences were much older than Barry Gordy & Motown.

  • I understand and I am glad you're not one of those ignorant trolls that deliver inflammatory remarks. I was just naming a few artists as examples since I am tired of the consensus that American music is inferior to British or vice versa.

  • Hey no sweat...I try to sit on the fence as much as possible in these debates. And I hear ya on the "idiot" remarks.Ive givin my opinion on this thing only to have a response that is insulting. Its like wtf? its just an opinion.LOL Take er ez...keep on listenin'

  • I respect everyone's taste for British music (I do too) but to say that American music is crap in comparison is just absurd. Let's not forget that America gave us six artists that influenced both American and British music: Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Bo Diddley, Little Richard, Buddy Holly and Bob Dylan. Without them, there'd be no Beatles, no Stones, no Who, no Clash, no Clapton, no Hendrix. And in turn, there'd be no Zeppelin, no Cream, no Floyd, no U2, no Smiths, no Roses, no Oasis, no Verve.

  • The Verve are influenced by The stone roses too??No wonder his face looks almost familiar for all i know, The Verve and Oasis are great band buddies and Coldplay is influenced by The Verve

  • This band atmosphere is ridiculous great. Hope to see them live some day in England, or in Spain.

  • Unfortunetly they broke up AGAIN. Hopefully they will reunite in the next decade or less but so far a reunion looks very bleak.

  • so bummed! was looking forward to seeing them live at least once before i die!

  • what a band

  • fkn class top night

  • fucking amazing

  • the only band to nail glasto!!!verve maun ,

  • great lyrics, this is the Verve at there best, i only seen em once and it was alright, but this sounds class, but then again there on at Glosto here,if u cant be arsed there u might as well get the bus and go home...!!!

  • They still got the energy! Expecting their live performance in HK.

  • NIce! Nick McCabe made me pick up the guitar 10 years ago!!!!

    i love him!!

  • MEGA genial !!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • best friggin band out there guys, what yiz on about ??? xxx

  • I agreee!!!!!!!!!! Very under rated!!!!

  • One of the most underappreciated and underrated bands ever.

  • @xFilter1967 Urban Hymns generally gets a lot of mainstream credit. If anything they're underrated for their two previous and two better albums A Storm in Heaven and A Northern Soul.

  • @thechosen2010 Na dude theyre great album but Urban Hymns definitely deserves the credit it gets.

  • @xFilter1967 i simply could not agree more. richard ashcroft is a talent for the ages! how he is not as big in america as say, oasis, coldplay, radiohead, etc. baffles me!

  • This song just rips your throat out. Amazing...

  • This is music. It's all i have to say. The Verve is the greatest band the latest 30 years

  • God Bless Ian Brown and The Stone Roses for setting the tone for Bands like Oasis, The Verve and Radiohead. Madchester Baby!!!

  • you forgot the smiths..... they were also one of the bands that developed the indierock-tone

  • Yes!!! Definitely. Ok here it goes. I go with Joy Division, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, The Pixies, Blur and Radiohead, Oasis and The Verve. To me those are the greatest English Rock Bands to have ever walked the Earth.

  • Yes that is absolutely true. I would also add bands like Coldplay, Franz Ferdinand, Pulp, Suede, Travis, Keane, Stereophonics, Manic Street Preachers, U2 (although they come from ireland)...... the list could go on and on. Somehow all the best bands come from UK. Don't know why but that's how it is. British rock is the only real rock.

  • I agree. All the real rock seems to come from the UK.

  • 1. The Pixies are American.

    2. You need to listen to the Rolling Stones, Beatles, Who, Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Kinks, Clash. England has produced some amazing music.

  • Yeah I did mess up on the pixies. They are American. As far as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd and The Clash I have a lot of that too. All The Beatles albums, most of the Stones and PInk Floyds Pulse album. I have 3 more of Zeppelin albums to be fully complete and one Clash album. Ill check out the kinks. Right now im getting into Eric Clapton and George Harrisons solo work. Thanks mate.

  • You gotta thumbs down from someone else not me. I think I was right the first time. It was The Stone roses that laid it down so bands like Oasis and The Verve were deeply influenced. Watch Ian Brown Perform. You Cant deny that Liam in some ways resembles Ian. Its not coincidence.

  • Liam Gallagher is basically a toned down Ian Brown. The Stone Roses influenced Oasis and The Verve who were the two biggest bands in the 90s, who have in turn, influenced the current biggest band in the world, Coldplay. I'm a New Zealander and have sooooooooo much respect for British. If it wasn't for your music before the 21st Century....I don't know where we'd be.

  • Im American. All I listen to is music that came from the UK. The only American Bands/Musicians I listen to are Jimi Hendrix and The Doors. All of the music I listen to is from England. Clapton, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Roses, Smiths, U2, The Police, Oasis, Coldplay, The Verve. Its insane!!! I shouldve been born a brit. LOL. Glad to hear you share the same interest.

  • That's so awesome mate. I feel exactly the same way. I think I was British in another life. So many incredible bands, the best humour in the world (second to kiwi humour!), creator of the best sports in the world, most exciting teen culture, awesome history, accents etc. I'm 15 and really, really want to go there so bad.

  • U2 are irish, not English.

  • I knew that dude. But thanks anyway.

  • Best band ever!! Richard Ashcroft is the best singer there has ever been!!

  • You have to say that The Bends is up there with Urban Hymns as well.

  • listen to universally speaking by the red hot chili peppers and give me love by george harrison they both sound like this

  • This performance is better than sex.

  • URBAN HYMNS; DEFINITELY MAYBE; OK COMPUTER; PARKLIFE; DIFFERENT CLASS are the holy grails of Britpop

  • i second that. the 5 best british albums of the 90s

  • what about 'The Stone Roses'?

  • De Ptm esta cancion----cada vez me sorprende mas. The Verve

  • Could listen to Ashcroft all day...Saw them at Oxegen last year..Unbelievable live

  • Didn't expect them to put more soul into any of their songs compared to before they split up but this is one song they have definately improved. My fav live version.

  • great band great song great performance .ASHCROFT/McCABE both LEGENDS

  • his voice... always impecable.

  • the best album ever!!!! URBAN HYMNS changed my life

  • I agree!!!

  • Can you believe that MTV 2's so called panel of experts didnt even put it in the top 20 albums of all time?Should have been top 5..That shows how under-rated the verve are

  • I dont believe in ratings, I believe in music that captures my soul , the hell with mtv and mainstream

  • MTV is a two-bit Mickey Mouse operation. They'd rather put emphasis on talentless faggots like Nickelback than a band with soul and emoton.

  • I know!!! This is no.1 without a doubt! :(

I'm in love with Richard's voice...

  • @11141983

    mine too

  • @11141983 i hear you mate me 2

  • @11141983 a storm in heaven and a northern sould were their best albums!

  • @11141983 Yes indeed, from Bittersweet right thru Come on. A classic album!!!

  • @11141983

    Bittersweet Simphony

  • what an absolute blinder..thats mccabe makin the sound of a cello on his guitar..wouldn't have believed it unless i'd seen it..swansea,sheps!

  • There ain't no space and time

    To keep our love alive..

  • I love this tune. Ashcroft and McCabe are so great together!! I wish they could find a way to continue their cooperation!! I love them both!

  • inspired me to take up drumming.. wicked tune man

  • :O

I would be crying if I was part of the crowd

  • U IF R A GIRL MARRY ME?

  • sad...

  • Anyone who thinks alternative rock is all about Fall Out Boy, Sum 41, Maroon 5 has obviously slept under the rock. Listening to the Verve is a welcome breath of fresh air and if Blur and Faith No More are reuniting, then it is living proof that real alt. rock is alive and well.

Oh, and Oasis are a good band too, although my favorite British band has always been the Smiths, the group that influenced Oasis AND the Verve.

  • yeah but... there's no alternative rock or anything there's just ROCK MUSIC. and that's it.

  • beatles suck put me to sleep

  • your man richard ash croft is better than these guys you should check him out he looks a bit like your man singing

  • This is the verve. And oasis are nowhere near this good.

  • oasis, is good too! you wanker, oasis the stone roses & the verve, are the best bands of the nineties

  • I agree bout Stone Roses man, Ian Brown is a genius

Also HAHAHAHAHAHAH (ROFL) about mcannner25's comment, man that woz sooooo funny

  • yeah of course they are, all the brit bands, from the 80's and 90's are, well, not all, but oasis the verve and the stone roses, were the ones, which change my life, andian brown's solo carreear is, really really good, i have just read some interview that a magazine did to mani the bassist of stone roses, and it'll probrably be a stone roses reunion, only if ian is agree, see ya man

  • haha and do you realize how retarded the word fuck looks when its spelled fook? pretty funny

  • i dont' care a fuck!

does that answerr your fuckin question?

  • wow you come across liam like,,you sad man. i bet you practice singing like him in the mirror dont you!..lol you need to be yourself cant be none else.;) are you feeling supersonic..???? PRICK!!!!!

  • no, i don't. i don't fucking mimic no one, you fuckin retard, because, i'm too good just by myself, but ya? ya listen to oasis music and then, ya come, here, and ya start to isult me, go a fuck your mom you fuckin retard twat, and i hope ya die, so i'll shit in your tomb

  • Oasis suck that hairy root

  • but how could you possibly confuse this with oasis. by the way, the verve fuckin kill oasis. ii put them up with the beatles.

  • i just said that oasis, were as good as the verve

ya fuckin stupid, read the oters comments

  • 'we have existence and thats all we share' brilliant! the older i get the more i learn the more i feel like that....

  • 'we have existence and thats all we share' brilliant!

  • lol class

  • This was always my fave song on the album.

  • glasto you were fookin blessed verve northern hero,s

  • I love Ashcroft but didnt get the lyrics wrong near the start? lol

  • who cares?

  • without a doubt, the most emotional song off of Urban Hymnes, and i don't mean that in a emo way!

  • I have been listening to Urban Hymns almost everyday or at least once a week since it came out in 97

thats 11 years and still counting.. i haven't even checked their other works yet
