Panasonic has some REALLY nice looking lightweight toughbooks out now. (H1 for example)
I've been using my iphone to compose emails so much I find myself hitting spacebar twice on the mac and expecting a period to appear at the end of my sentence.
Awesoome idea! But I wouldn't recommend Mac OS. It's slow and it crashes. Use Linux. It is fully customizable, so you can make it LOOK like a Mac but it won't be. Remember, LINUX!!!!
I use LINUX on almost all of my machines at work and at home. There are a lot of tools under OSX that I cannot duplicate under Linux. So this is my compromise. The laptop also boots Backtrack and Ubuntu on a very regular basis off of USB disk to RAM disk and does very well.
Apple will never come up with a rugged notebook, and let me tell you why.
He will never authorize the production of something that has a rugged build. Take a look at the entire Mac line, aesthetics is clearly a very important factor that Apple highly values. Hell, he just shifted from a one-button trackpad (as opposed to a two button trackpad) to NO buttons on the newest Macbook line. On the Macbook Air, there are simply three ports that are hidden with a latch.
the mac os is designed to work well with the computers that apple makes, I'm curious how the ported version of os performs on an machine that it wasn't intended for.
I am not the maker of this video, but I happen to know that If you have a CD drive in the toughbook, and $40.00 to spend, it is as easy to install as typing the word "a". Just put the disk in the drive and hit "Install."
It does not have an internal DVD drive due to the waterproofing. It does take quite a bit of customization to get the OS working correctly. I have over 100 hours of driver hacking and configuration on this laptop.
Compared to Linux, I know that this is insane. I just like the challenge. :)
So people who want to buy an Apple Mac can, and people like me who want a tablet / ruggedized mac can buy one of these. Win Win for all if Steve would get his head out of his Socket.
Video rocked, nice groove. I'd buy one today as I work in similar environments.
Steve is known to be surprising but opening up the OS will dilute the Mac brand. It's the combination of software and hardware that makes a Mac an Apple. Sounds like BS but it's true.
Well, from what I know, Apple isn't offering these tablet based products that a lot of us need. We don't have any other choices but to customize ourselves Mac OS based tablets until Apple respond to this need. In the meantime, great job toughmacpro!
very cool

Mac is the worst operating system, but awesome for tablets. I hate windows on tablets its annoying.

How did you get the screen to work? My CF-19 only works with an external display and the trackpad doesnt work.
What fix did you use for your toughbook?
Thanks in advance!

the toughbook running OSX. That's really not normal! You should put out a distro of that. Or some sort of package & manual.
That's the only laptop I'd have over the apple-made ones, seriously good stuff. Waterproof.
If apple made a rugged pro laptop, that'd probably be good.

hi everybody!
anyone knows what model of toughbook is, what distribution of hackintosh he installed and if all peripherals works fine?
thank you in advance for any answer!

WOW
That must not be OS X out of the box, you've created the dream pen interface for a fully functioning OS.
Dragging, dropping, and most importantly hovering over the dock without having to sacrifice click functionality.
Damn.

who knows... what if they come out with the sexiest Toughbook around?
mynameisnicholas 3 years ago
It's awesome that you can do this
but apple doesn't support other hardware because they want an all-in-one package, with minimal conflicts
Palm, for example, admitted that they should have followed the same route instead of allowing access to develop software...
I may be wrong, but that's just my understanding...
