Be honest, would this be suitable for some university halls of residence? Bearing in mind its a plexi style thing, would I have to get a pedal to manage it?
this amp sounds great in this vid. My class 5 ( in cream colour and block Marshall Logo - it says it's limited edition) doesn't sound even close to this one even cranked all the way up :( Any advise why? THX
thanks for the demo, incredible little beast - after owning marshalls all my life expect nothing less - and one more thing - it's always great seeing other left-handed guitar players as myself -
Is the guy playing @6:32 with Joe the same guy doing the demostration of the amp because the sound of the amp during the demo doesnt sound like the one he's playing on the stage? Demo sounds muddy, stage sound is crisp...are the using drivers and gain boosters in the singal chain and messing wih EQ on the stage?
Hi ive been looking at the blackstar HT5 and was goin to get one this weekend but now ive seen this at the same price. Its going to be used from blues to metal with a fender jim root tele with emg 60/81. How does this compare with the ht5? to be honest i think it doesn't sound as good but can only rely on whichever camera shot the videos and my computer speakers on here and as you stock both you must have compared them at some time or other. Cheers Martin.
Who ever wants big amp sound in a small package with enough gain for metal get a VOX night train. That things a beast but, only in thick mode. Marshall also owns VOX now.
I just picked up this amp on Friday and it sounds RIDICULOUS. It is basically a mini-Plexi / Bluesbreaker. You can get some really killer sounds out of it. This amp sounds HUGE for its size and I couldn't be happier with its tone! It takes drive pedals very well and is perfect for recording. It's like having a Marshall 1987 Plexi head cranked, without blowing your windows out with the volume.
For $400 I've yet to come across ANY amp that sounds as good as the Class 5. I'll do a vid soon.
It has to be! I've owned Gibson Les Pauls and now I play an ESP Eclipse II Vintage Burst.... it has all the tone and bite of a Les Paul, with a slimmer profile neck and body. ESP really make great guitars.
I agree with BeerBatteredBear. In addition to that mushy undefined sound, it also often has that dirty fuzz+broken speaker sound in the breakup area. Which is awesome, really, but not if this is your main amp. I wouldn't get this amp for smooth bluesy leads and riffs. Its better for pure hardrock. Either that, or the tester didn't roll back his guitar volume while demoing this thing. But he wouldn't be that stupid would he?
I just tried this amp today, I have own/owned many Marshalls over the years and this Class 5 is one of the best little amps I have ever played. You need 2 of them, one dry, one wet and then get a tube screamer, DS-1 or a Saturator. You can get any tone out of it you want. You can also run it into another cab (16 ohm out) which can also be switched to a headphone out. These other posts are junk, I've been teaching and guitar playing for 28 yrs, get this amp.
I just got this amp. Changed the tubes but a nice vintage sound. The funny thing about it is that the clean sound is what I prefer. I have a few Vox amps to thy work well both clean and driven. What to buy ? Follow your heart...
Try a Vox Night Train - amazingly clear, classy cleans which break into wonderful classic rock, blues tones...and then the raging crunch 'section' (the thick mode) that goes from distorted blues to GnRoses to really hard rock (old school '80s type metal) - it absolutely rocks.
Forget this Marshall junk...and Vox is still a British tone and sounds leagues better.
I'd expect it's a bit too loud for that purpose. Everything's relative, innit, but e.g. I've got black heart's killer ant (fraction of 1 watt :) and I can barely put the volume half way up in my 36 m2 apartment. I suggest you get a distortion pedal or a modelling amp.
Maybe it's just me but this amp sounds pretty "suffocated" at high volume in this video... Clean's good though.. Check Rob Chapper's demo -> kick-ass!
Hey man. Thanks for the video. I don't know if you would know this, but how heavy can this amp get? I know this won't be doing Pantera but could you give me a range? The videos don't always give the best tone. Thanks man! :D
This amp can be considered as a building block for your sound rather than a stand alone high gain amp. This amp will give you the classic thick vintage Marshall sound at manageable volume so just add your favorite distortion/overdrive pedal or multi-fx for a higher gain world, just like in the ole days !! On its own with a Les Paul and cranked its 100% bluesy 70's rock.
Yeah, I have a Les Paul Studio. It has pretty high output pups, hotter than a Standard, so could this cranked with that Les Paul get me say around an early Guns N Roses or Van Halen amt of OD? I'm not looking for spot on, but something in the same ballpark. Ya know?
£299 in the UK, they sound superbly beefy for a small combo don't they!! Although i can't afford 6 like Joe Bonnamassa..., I reckon i could squeeze one more small amp in past the wife......
Blues Junior has a lot more "fizz" about it while the Class 5 is far more about the darker "brown" Marshall tone. I like both so I guess it depends. A Les Paul and a Marshall always sounds good, a Fender Guitar and Fender amp always sound good too. Flat out is where the amp magic happens for me.......
only distortion? that sucks

An awesome sounding amp. Add a master volume and I'll put one on the card right now.

Why no stand by switch? If it's got valves shouldn't it have a stand by switch to cool hot tubes down a bit before you shut it completely off...

Hey guys, i will never buy this crappy amp.
Buy a VIBE DOLPHIN 20 , a much better amp!
My VIBE has a great creamy gain, very dynamic, long sustain, tremolo, reverb and it's very light!

The guys amp on stage sounds way better than the demo amp. Completely diff. tones. Must be the superior Les Paul over the ESP ;)

LOL it's not an ESP, it's some weird Les Paul copy from some European company.

Sorry I have to post again in response to JMAC.
Listen from 1.50 - 3 minutes...it's a flacid sounding mushy indistinct mess of an amp.
It sounds like it's from 1915 not 1950.
Plus on the GearPage they are getting caned because of poor build quality and chassis/tube rattle.
Buy at your own risk.
Marshall...what happened to you?
The Haze...now this?
