So earlier in 2008 Kosovo declared independence and if Serbia wanted to use force to preserve its country the West warned that it would intervene against the Serbs. Fast forward to South Ossetia declaring independence. Russia warned Georgia that should they use military that Russia would intervene, keeping with the precedent set by by the West with Kosovo. Georgia sent in their military first. The US fought a war to preserve itself and now it is dictated which other countries my have that right.
