  • and yes, if there's any place in this world where hmong people can claim and develop as a homeland, french guyane is it. they are 1% of the 200k population but produce 80% of the food. the french basically abandoned french guyane because it was so hard to produce food and yet 3k hmong people are showing them it can be done. if more educated hmongs from the US, thailand and laos immigrate there, we can easily become the majority in the country in just 10yrs or so.

  • i think the actual number is around 80% of the food is produced by hmong. and no, its not because the other people are more lazy, its just that hmong people are natural farmers and have farmed in the worst soils in asia. french guyane's soil is one of the worst in the world. the hmong traditional style of slash-and-burn works extremely well for this kind of soil cause it releases lots of nutrients back into it.

  • Hello anyone, where is this in the globe? Look so primitive!

  • They are actually quite modern. You'd be surprise. Tho... it is in the Rain Forest.

  • This is a country with the size of MN? which colonized by the French. But it is base in South America, right above Brazil next to Surinam. If anyone never seen "Amazon" they should go down there.

  • OOOKAY! You are not by chance, Tru & Mai Ha's sister, are you? "Tais Xis" ? kekeke If so, where the heck is brother Dao Ly planning to move to?

  • yes, i am tais xis. who is this? hm...now you're scaring me, how come i don't know who you are. it seems you know me well, c'mon show yourself (^_^)....lol.

  • Your sisters know me well; Mai Ha & Tru. In both 2 trips back to Cacao, I stayed at brother Dao's house. I love your sister's croissants=) Remember when they all came to MN 2 yrs ago, and stayed at our house? The dancers and parents? You HAVE to remember that, when our house was PACKED! *smile*

  • ah...of course i remember you and know who are now. damn, i was just thinking how you knew me so well. ok...ok..ok. i remember it now. actually, we were at your house again this past summer. txiv-laus nrob them guys came back with wendy, now i forgot were you there when we visited? how are you?

  • I am well, and yes I was there when they stayed over for the night. In fact, I was down the basement when you were telling lil' wendy to go to sleep even tho she still wanted to stay up! She was using my computer. Tru was telling me about her lovely adventures in India as well. Ah good times. How I wish I could go back soon. You have to tell Niam Tij Nrob and brother Nrob I said Hello when you get there.

  • Hey thanks for putting this on....i have been to Cacao 5 times but never flew over the village.

  • When was the last time you've been there?

  • I was there in 1994, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002. This Monday I will be flying back there for a 3 months stay. It might be my last trip for a very long time, because my sister is thinking of relocating.

  • WOW! Now that is just damn lucky! Who is your sister? The last time I was there was 2005. You must be aiming for "Ranboutants" season ;) Gosh I want to go! Always nice to see my childhood friends again.

  • cacao looks just like villages in laos. how sad!

  • It may looks like villages in Laos, but they are very modern inside most of their homes. You have to see the kinds of cars they drive things they own first before you feel sad for them. According to a closed-friend study research ten years ago. overall all the Hmong that has fled Laos as refugees, these group of Hmong in Cacao, French Guiana were the richest group. I don't know about now, since economy does change. So, you shouldn't have to feel sad for them. They'll probably laugh to hear this.

  • that's understandable. they might be financially stable; however, it is sad that they live in such isolated towns (south america). I wish to have gone and visited this great place. I don't know anyone who lives in Cacao; therefore, I could be making assumptions. anyway, thanks for the heads up.

    hmong usa

  • the thing is 90% of them came straight from thailand from the late '70s. so most older generation never really been to other places beside the main land france. they felt like this is home. however, the younger generation has moved and travel in the surround countries but mostly to france. they never felt they are isolated. i understand you may think it is a sad thing, because we grew up here most of our lives. but most of them when visit US couldn't wait to go back. u should visit them 1 day.

  • It's all base on perception. What you grew up around here and feel is nice, is the same concept growing up there. I mean heck, I miss it sometimes.... having grown up there ;)

  • True. My friend, who's moved out to Cayenne, keep contact with me through msn regularly. The other fellas back in Cacao (aka jungle) have pimped out euro-sport cars, satellite dishes, internet, cellphones, etc etc etc. These folks aren't "third-world-poor." Tho ever since business was open for Suriname/Brazil as well, things have slowed down "a bit", but they are still very well off for the most part.

  • So this country has alot of black people like America too right? They populated 50% of the country too right? Just wonder if they are prejudice ans stereotype like US here too?

  • yes, and don't forget the native too (indians). in the early days there were prejudice, because these groups of hmong are new immigrants, but since hmong moved there in the late 70s they have since been the main crop producing for the country. Though they're only 1% to the population there, argrilcuturally they produced up to 99% of it. Now anyone think they are poor? i know i've sidetrack a bit here....but with this kinda status, prejudice is not as much or if anymore....like many years ago.

  • if Hmong only count for 1% of the population but produce over 90% of food crops than that mean those wood eating meso-indians and escape prisoner/ ex-mine worker negros are just lazzier than an ape.

  • @HmongChaoFa YOU AIN'T A SHITTING MAN!

  • c'est un très joli village, mais malheureusement, tout ce passe mal en ce moment.
