I love the Newcastle Metro- when they built it they should have built more stock and given other urban areas a similar metro system. I love the Metro Cammel cars- simple and functional.
Would anyone be able to tell me if the metro is conveniently in Camperdown area? like by Station road? and what train would that be? I'm not from there, but may be spending some time and want to be able to run around on my own etc. thanks in advance. and How long from that area to Newcastle Centre. Love that area!
Thanks for this! I'm writing a poem about the Metro and typed it in while feeling uninspired. I never dreamt there would actually be Newcastle Metro videos ... thank you so much!!!
The merseyrail network has about 3 lines - northern, Wirral and City. 6 underground stations and 67 stations in total (75 miles of track) on the wirral and city lines (the city line does not count as it runs on national rail lines out of Lime ST and uses desel units rather than the electric ones on the other two lines).
Following on from earlier comments. Liverpool's 'Merseyrail' has several underground stations underneath Liverpool but on a smaller scale than here in Newcastle, Glasgow and obviously London. It uses mainly the old rail network around the city and also crosses the Mersey river over to the wirral area. The carriages are very similar inside to London underground trains rather than the newcastle metro stock.
The rolling stock is well designed aslo at t least in terms of size and weight etc, and as for visually well I know of plenty of other trains that look alot worse, persoanlly I don't think it's that bad, it's not greatne or crap, it's neither.
When I first rode on it in 2000 I thought it was really modern and was impressed!
It's a bit strange to think that the cars are almost 30 years old or over!
I bet they're now the oldest public transport vehicles still running in Newcastle. Buses built at the time the Metro opened would have been scrapped long ago!
I can think of several other cities that should have this metro system also. I imagine this one will grow in size from its current 48miles. Well I imagine it will need to or should. Leeds,Bristol,Cardiff,Glasgow and even places that have a Metro like Manchester,Birmingham and I think Liverpool, not sure if they have one, should have this type of Metro instead. It's the most versatile.
Manchester, Birmingham, Sheffield, Croydon and Nottingham have Trams. They do have segregated track but no underground metro running apart from beneath roundabouts etc.
Newcastle's is one of only 3 underground Metros in Britain; the others are London Underground and Glasgow Subway.
The fact that it is out of the way of the traffic is a major advantage. It carries more passengers than any other light rail system outside London. At least 36 million per year (more than Glasgow).
Sorry I accidently hit the thumbs down! I meant to press the other button!
As for other cities, I think it could have been done in Manchester as most of the Metrolink network is former suburban railway. Originally, they wanted a heavy rail underground tunnel, but I guess the cash wasn't available.
Considering the size of Manchester and the congestion the city suffers, I think that it was a cheapo decision not to build the city centre bit underground.
i remember when i lived in newcastle, loved seeing the trains come through there.

Nice to see a lesser known Metro system. I like the rolling stock. Better looking than the London underground. Also it looks well patronised

Newcastle really hit a jackpot with their metro. One of the only cities in the UK to have a real metro, lucky people.
Thanks for the video!
