@Kazlic The original was all in kana.  I believe it was done to give the effect of someone telling a story. The only parts in Kanji were the narrative parts where the story overlay scrolled by.

@BetrandofJeanneDarc thats becuase Mother 2 is the japaneese release (the original sequel to mother 1 released on its own) - earthbound is the american version of mother 2 and mother 1+2 is a re-release of mothers 1 and 2 all in one box - all the OP said is that it DOES NOT work in earthbound (american release) nor Mother 2 (japaneese release) but DOES work in Mother 1+2 (the re-release with both games in one box)...

Yes, exactly. What i was getting at was that while the SNES games Mother 2 and Earthbound were essentially the same title, there were very, very slightly differences beyond just the language translation, hence his distinction between the two titles when saying it works in neither game, which is what confused the OP.
