How to Skin a Deer

what method do u use to hang it if not the back legs. iv heard of people hanging it by the neck but that seems like is would rotate too easily then. please explain

@bendotwood if you hang a deer by its legs the blood cant drain out. First what i do is hang it up by neck or antlers if its a buck, then let it hang for a few days if its cold enough. i take a hose to the inside spray the blood out then i let it drain, i cut the skin around the neck cut down the breast bone cut the legs off and just cut a peel and cut and peel and cut and peel and you should just have the skin off in one piece. thats the way most do it around here :)

It's a lot easier to skin it by hanging it by the antlers, slitting along the inside of the legs and pulling the skin down and off from the neck (or from cape if you want to preserve it for a neck mount). Pulling the skin off from front to back goes WITH the grain and the hide just peals right off with very little cutting necessary, in my experience.

maybe easier but the heat gets trapped in the bodies upper cavity, not allowing the heat to escape as effectively if it were hind legs up. But I guess you can do it that way also..

cant do much... wrap the wet hide around you for a night if its raining or relly cold but that will leave you all sticky and nasty in the morning and attract flies to you for the rest of the day

why wouldn't you be popular? because you know how to hunt for your meat? its a lot better than eating beef prepared in an industrial facility. no chemicals and you help the deer population with selective harvesting. keeping the population down prevents overpopulation and disease. too bad Europeans don't figure this out. They would have way more wildlife if they had hunters to protect the species and create funds to protect nature.

We have hunters regulate the wildlife.Many countries in Europe don't have large preditors like wolves, bears etc. to regulate the wildlife, and most countries in Europe are much smaller and with more people per m2 than the USA so the government regulates how many animals can be shot per year too keep the population healthy. I'm speaking of my second home in Slovakia and the surrounding areas in Poland and Austria. That part of Europe is hurting bad when it comes to wildlife. Scandinavia on the other hand is doing well because they understand that they need to be hunted and respected to continue a healthy population.

Even in Europe, the tags go to wildlife protection. Socialism had more to worry about than animals.

Well, for the East of Europe (the former USSR-territories)I think you're right, the wars there in the nighties did the population also no good...people had other things on their mind (to survive the war themselves for example) than the wildlife. Hope you have a nice week!

My husband is taking me on a hunting trip and I find it amusing that big macho men can't do a job a woman like me can do in no time at all with minimal fuss.
