I'm a US Army vet, too. I didn't see war time, and truthfully, I thank the gods for that. However, I joined up to protect *everyone's* rights. That includes GLBT. Denying people the right to marriage doesn't "protect the sanctity of marriage", if anything, it makes it less sacred. If a straight guy from *Texas* can see that, you'd think anyone could. Protect equality, people, and allow Gays the right to marry.
