  • Such a sweet yet depressing scene. But then funny for all the wrong reasons.

  • I see the art of why this scene was in the film, but i clearly see the reason why it was cut from the movie for decades. Don't forget, Frankinstein didn't really know much of the difference between wrong or right.

  • Frankenstein is a classic, I love this movie

  • mary shelley was no fool, ask yourself why someone would throw a child away? and the person who threw the child away was considered a monster? humm dont think to hard you might just hurt yourself

  • @MrFalconford This movie has almost nothing to do with the work of Mary Shelley. It's based on the stage play by Peggy Webling, the storyline is completely different from the novel as well as most characters. Her depiction of the Creature and its intentions (she never calls it "Monster") is so much more complex and therefor upsetting than this movie conveys. Unfortunately most people consider this to be the "real Frankenstein"...

  • haha we watched this movie in school and when he threw her in the pool our whole class was cracking up

    this some funny shitt

  • It is not his fauld!

  • so frankenstiens monster has the brain of a killer

  • @MultiComandercody In the book, he turns against humanity for forsaking him, and starts killing those who are close to Victor, even framing Victor's father's maid for the murder of Victor Frankenstein's brother. Victor knows she is innocent, but he cannot admit it, as doing so would admit he has created this monster. The monster kills his beloved also, as the monster wanted a mate, a female, but Victor would not create such a creature. The monster retaliates against him.

  • When I first saw this I was like Aww this is so cute! wait...no no, don't throw her in the water....ok she's in the water.....wait she's drowning?! NOOO!

  • whenever that poor bastard smiled, all i could think of was "I WANNA TEND THE RABBITS!"

  • This scene was more effective when you only saw the monster reaching for the girl and then cutting away to the scene in which her father is carrying her body to the mayor. It's always what you don't see that is truly frightening.

  • It fits the idea that the monster is suppose to be a sympathetic character, yet at the time anything that wasn't created naturally had to be inherantally evil, part of the reason the series went down hill after Bride, the sympathy was all but gone after Son and the monster became simply a mindless brute

  • is she gonna blow him or what

  • i feel bad for the cat...

  • is the cat still alive?

  • I'm guessing she broke her neck on a submerged rock or branch, or something, it's the only way that could've killed her. From what I can gather, college students do worse to each other in 'initiation' ceremonies.

  • guess those good old days people didn't really teach their children "not to talk to strangers"...

  • By CUTTING this scene - TV only causes people to think something far WORSE actually happened...

  • LMFAO!!! Now let's see if YOU float!!! WTF..... your drowning? LAME I'm going to look for more flowers!

  • Der is n lieber

  • @MeerDrKuLa1 der is so lieb...der hat sie zum baden ins wasser geschmissen LOL ^^

  • Poor bastard...

  • OMG This is some funny ass shit

  • She couldn't just swim to the shore, the water doesn't look that deep.

  • @metaldave08096 You try swimming with a snapped spine, multiple contusions and you head twisted 180 degrees !lol

  • Comment removed

  • Ooh flower float! .....do you float too???=)

  • Great scene and all, but it seems like she landed in pretty shallow water...

  • ne 0ne kn0w wat m0vie im thinkin 0f... driving me nuts. sundance channel. f0reign film, 14 yr 0ld hip hop dancer chick t0sses a t0ddler in a lake but she kant jump in and save her kus she cant swim either s0 she saves her with a stick 0r sumthin. the lil girl is her m0ms b0yfriends (wh0 she had sex with earlier) daughter.

  • @j1zz1n3m

    "Citizen Kane"

  • In the original release this scene was edited and the part where he throws her into the water was cut. So the scene cut from the monster crouching near the little girl to the scene where her father carries her body into the village. The movie left to the imagination what may have happened. This was an example of censorship that actually wound up making it look like something even worse than being thrown into the water may have happened to the little girl.

  • He looked as if he were going for help.......

  • Reminds me a little of Mr Bean.

  • oops! She didnt float

  • I love the way he runs off afterwards like Mr. Bean. Always makes me laugh.

  • @BathorysGraveland haha yeah u rightt

  • Funniest thing I have ever watched for school.

  • boris karloff, argued strongly with james whale about throwing marilyn harris into the water..karloff wanted to gently "place" her in the pond. throwing her in karloff said would make the monster look like a beast..whale won the arguement..

  • @801liveable It would've been far better that way actually, the throwing in the water is what ruins the scene almost. Also some of the dubbing is terrible even for that time.

  • @801liveable I thought I had also read that Whale had wanted Karloff to hold her high over his head when he threw her in the pond, but that Karloff's back trouble which had been strained by Whale insisting on countless reshoots of Karloff having to drag actor Colin Clive around wouldn't allow him to do anything more than toss her into the pond.

  • O.O JODER ...

  • poor girl... T___T

  • XD classic he threw her in and was "shit, fuck she doesn't float, shit let's het the fuck out of here"

  • Frankenstein and The Bride Of Frankenstein rank as two of the most influential flims ever made, right up there with The Wizard Of Oz, ET, Casablanca and other classics. A movie has to not only have something uniquely visual, but it's message must be strong. Nothing stronger than a monster throwing a little girl in a lake, drowning her. That was heavy for 1931. People were shocked and appalled by it.

  • This is a great scene today. Casey Anthony has been found not guilty....I am putting this on facebook

  • @920jimbo I know, sentence Casey Anthony to death then make Frankenstein haul his arse out and dump her in the local pond!

  • OMG! ...awesome o.0

  • the dislike was from the girls father

  • @TheDeathtune hahahahhahahahaahahah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • frankenstein malamm 30

  • frankenstein

  • thumbs up if youre here just because you fucking love frankenstein

  • @thechickwholuvsbnbh Pretty much

  • She kinda died pretty fast. She wasn't kicking and screaming for help.

  • Why would he leave her home alone.

  • He's like "white girl dead, i'm getting the hell outta here!"

  • He loved kids - if you could just get the wild taste out!

  • trololololol

  • 2:35-2:58 lol

  • Thumbs up if you're here because of me

  • Another example of how censorship backfires- the omission suggests rape rather than accidental drowning.

  • @rickw1100 >> Yea, this uncensored version also makes him sympathetic because you know he didn't intend to hurt her. He tries to save her when he realizes she's drowning, and the fear in his face when he turns back to run away. While I enjoy Bride of Frankenstein a lot more, you can't ignore the original. Just as good.

  • @van8ryan -Absolutely, I agree with you completely. I once read that film historians, as a rule, consider the "Glenn Strange" monster as one to be feared,- but the "Boris Karloff" monster, as one to be pitied. I think theres a lot of wisdom in that.

  • If I'm not mistaken, Karloff had a disagreement with James Whale about this scene. Whale wanted the creature to throw Maria into the water, but Karloff insisted that he gently place her in the water, as throwing her was violent, and the creature was clearly not trying to hurt her. Well, obviously Whale won. (And I agree with Whale.)

  • lol.... best scene ever...

  • great and tragic scene

  • awwh!:') he was just playing broskies:(

  • heh boris karlof what a great role for him :)

  • i saw this prt n thought aww poor guy he just wanted to be friendly lol but i guess thats the moral dont play with strangers

  • She died on the shore....in one foot of water..

  • @MrMeat31 I know, isn't it weird? The girl must have been a real terrible swimmer, really O.o

  • did she died?

  • did the girl actually die in the movie?

  • @pietercoopman yhh so da dad brought her body into town and every1 was looking 4 da murderer )':

  • @RandomGirlsxx02 auch, bummer

  • i watched this in english earlier i know its sad but i couldnt stop laughing thumbs up if you think its funny x

  • What about YOUR BOY?!

  • Yeah.... Film Vault.

  • Film Vault

  • Yaaaa....Film Vault

  • thumbs up if The Film Vault brought you here!

  • @GummyPlatypus What about your boy

  • @GummyPlatypus What about ya boy

  • Film Vault!

  • Horror novel see video book trailer

  • what makes you think she drown? Did it say that later in the movie?

  • @castorres7

Yes, she drown - it was stated later in the movie.

  • @castorres7 yes the corpse is seen later

  • Does the little girl die? Can any one tell me

  • Marilyn Harris was her name... dob aug,19,1924 -dod dec,1,1999 heartfailure and cancer

  • somebody got thrown into a pond by frankenstein

  • At this point in the book, the monster well learned. He's not an ignorant clot. Moreover, at this particular scene, the monster attempts to save the girl -- he dosen't end up making friends with her (or anyone for that matter). The point of this is to show (among other things) societies mistreatment of the different or exotic by means of ignorance. It is to show how society creates monsters.

Why do movies have to reduce stories to a series of meaningless events?

  • @loftymuses What are you talking about? This scene isn't even in the book. And have you watching this film in full? It's not reduced to a series of meaningless events. The creature is as frightened and confused as he is in the novel.

  • Who is James Rolfe? The father?

  • looks alil like micheal jackson

  • Plop

  • funny

  • I remember when I first saw this. I believe I said "WTF! Epic Fail!"

  • dumb ass monster = fail

  • And the little girl drowns in the shallow end, where she could probably stand there :)

  • Little girls cant float like flowers

  • If you wanna skip the bullshit and see the girl get thrown into the pond 2:24

  • Thumbs up if you're here because of James Rolfe

  • @vaccarovj totally dude!

  • i liked when she asked for his name his face was like ;~[] derp

  • In this scene, you feel bad for him, he was having fun and playing and then he accidentely kills the little girl :'(

  • remember the scene from son of mask where the baby starts dancing that scene has nothing to do with this scene

  • @yaktr12: Oh James is hilarious! :D

  • @RockyBalboa211 he sure is!

  • FRANKENSTEIN: Swim time yaaaaay!!!

    girl:gurgle drown

FRANKENSTEIN:Why must this always happen :'(

  • The first truly horrifying scene in cinema....

  • @LANBritain1 Check out 1930's "All Quiet on the Western Front" to see a World War 1 scene where a bomb goes off as a soldier climbs a fence and when the smoke clears away, all you see are his severed hands hanging from the fence.

  • @LANBritain1 I love this film as much as anyone, but there were many, many "truly horrifying" scenes in cinema before this one.

  • @271tixe

Ah you may be right, however - from a young teenage film buff, I've only seen the ultimate classics. I found this one particularly frightening and disturbing because if the whole idea of a child being killed, now it may be the norm, but take in account that 10 years previously film was still silent, sound was still new - so this gives a darker, horrifying feeling to me, everytime I watch it.

  • @LANBritain1 That's great that you're into this stuff at such a young age. I'm not too much older myself, but I was into these films as a teenager (and even younger), as well. You should check out "Island of Lost Souls" if you haven't seen that one already.

  • when the second half was cut it created the illusion that the Monster drowned the girl on purprose and enjoyed watching her die seeing the entire thing it's clear it was an accident and you can tell what the Monster's thinking when he throws the girl into the pond

"Flowers Pretty, look flowers float, wait flowers pretty girl pretty, pretty things float so girl must float", you can tell from the look on his face at the end he knows he did something bad and he's scared

  • oh the innocence of children...

  • Really a brilliant scene.

  • how the hell did she not swim?

  • Kinda reminds me of I Assault on Precinct 13 (1976 Version)

  • so sad he thouht she was goin to flaot but ...

  • I cant believe this was cut from the origonal movie, although it is still shocking today

  • Even till this day, one of the most shocking scenes in cinema history

  • I never saw Frankenstein as a monster but more of an understood child

  • @FergusTV1 Tell me, how is the the scientist who created the "monster" an "understood child." If you're referring to frankenstein's monster, you probably mean misunderstood child. Regardless only a retard would call the monster frankenstein.

  • @gamelvr1 I meant the monster i am sorry for my... mistake i do know the difference between frankenstein and the monster it was simply a mistake nothing more i do know the difference you don't need to call me a retard only retards call people retards ( oh and when i said understood i did mean Misunderstood it wasjust a typo )

  • this scene was like cut from videos and cinemas for about 50 or 60 years it was only shown for like a weak in the original release time

  • @FergusTV1 I don't know if you agree, but I actually like the "censored" version of this scene better. Maybe it's because I grew up with that version, but I just seems more disturbing to me that it's cut out and left to my imagination.

  • i feel sorry 4 the cat

  • RUN KITTY GO GET HELP

  • its abit funny how she just plonks right in :L :L doesnt even TRY to swim up :')

mehe. my homework is to find out how the monster dies , i wanna see it in video though D; cant find it... <3

  • @TigersYeh I think its in the son of Frankenstein or something i don't know alot about the movies sorry

  • omg, she's holding the cat then in the next slide the cat's running off the screen. it's like the cat knew! lol. But indeed, i saw this movie today in english class and laughed my ass off for a good 2 minutes or so. everyone was looking at me by that time hahahaha

  • omg did she fucking die :(

  • @coolkidzvideos1 YES SHE DID DIE AND HER FAMILY WAS STRUCK WITH GRIEF!!!

  • First rule of Horror: If people are having a nice time, they will be brutally murdered.

  • Notice the shift in picture quality when the Monster throws Maria into the water. For many years, that shot was left out of the movie, leaving the audience to wonder exactly what the Monster did to Maria, especially when they saw her father carrying her body through the town later on.

  • We were watching this in Cinema Study class yesterday. We were all laughing when Frankenstein tossed the girl into the water (we're really messed up, I know).

  • @SpongeSebastian

Ha lol, nah, my class are like that too.

  • where is the complete scene. somebody know?

  • lol

  • As long as the cat doesn't get hurt!

  • for n1931 that make-up is frickin sweet

  • this is what life is really like. one big fuckin misunderstanding! LOL

  • Comment removed

  • Although I had watched many movies that contained violence before, I was shocked when I first saw this scene. I would have expected anything, but not that the director goes through with focussing the camera on the killing of the child. I wouldn't have expected this from such an old film. However, from the artistic point of view, it is brilliant, as it comprises the whole drama of the creature in a few minutes. What a bitter story climax...

  • I found this scene heartwarming till the end i totally wasnt expecting that when i saw this

  • now I can see why this scene is very much criticized

Frankestein: oh no more flowers...wait....lil girl pretty like flowers, she will float too *toss her* ...yeah.......oh shit...*runs off the scene* lol

  • @duranls1Dr. Frankenstein is the man who created the "monster" who killed the little girl. How could you be dumb enough to call the "monster" frankenstein.

  • @gamelvr1 well, sometimes, inventions are named after their inventors. did dr frankenstein not "invent" the monster. i know the monster is never directly referred to as frankenstein in the novel or movies, but i think the common mistake of calling the monster frankenstein could be correct... kinda

  • Poor Kid....!!! But WOO GO BADASS MONSTER!

  • hahaha we watched this part of the film in school to compare the monsters obliviousness to that of lennie in Of Mice And Men

    hilarious, love this part <3

  • 1:06 - 1:18 One of my all-time favorite screen images.

  • We watched this in English today and we saw this scene and every one laugh at the face the kitten is making right before she walks to the river because it looksas though she isstrangleing it

  • I always noticed that too.

  • @sbobrules97 Your English teacher is failing.

  • Ok good, he didn't drown the kitten. :)

  • is this a deleted scene?

  • @Sefco26

The second half, where the monster accidentally drowns the girl, was cut from the film in some states during it's run in 1931, and completly taken out in 1937 when the film was released, it wasn't restored until 1986. The other famous cut was the line "Now I know what it feels like to be God" in the scene where Frankenstien first brought the creature to life, that line wasn't restored until 1999

  • @snakes3425 It's an absolute miracle that these scenes survived - Universal was notorious for being the least preservation-oriented of the big studios. They burned many of their silent film negatives in a bonfire for a 1930's film.

  • WOW! I've never scene this complete with him actually throwing her in! Amazing! This was filmed at what is now the Malabu Creek Canyon State Park, where Planet of The Apes, and MASH and a zillion other films were filmed.

  • On the original unrestored version, 2:21 2:38 were not included.

  • Yeah, that was a good idea to cut those scenes out. It implied that he raped her.

  • I can't stop watching this and laughing. this is what life is really like. one big fucking misunderstanding! ha ha ha

  • ha ha ha ha

  • ha ha ha ha ha

  • so she just sinks then?

  • Oh and keep in mind people that this was deleted until the late 80's because it was considered too horrifying for the time along with the end of Frankenstein's line when he first gave life to his creation. Frankenstein's line was cut by thunder, and this ended with him reaching for her (doesn't make much sense since that gives the impression he meant to hurt her and did far worse things). Still that says alot for this movie. It kinda reminds me of William Frankenstein's murder in the book too.

  • By today's standards it may look a bit silly for the fact it doens't look deep at all, but it still is completely brilliant. My main problem with the Universal Frankenstein movies is they mainly don't even try to go by the book and he wasn't as pitiful till the sequel save for this one scene and his first entrance. But then I went ahead and bought the movies and I'm glad I did. There's so much emotion in this scene alone. Karloff is the Monster.

  • well looks like she didn't float so well.

  • the cat is so adorable in this film and yes i can see the cat was not happy because the little girl was not holding the cat right.

  • I remember watching this movie in film studies. There was literally a giant, simultaneous gasp when he dropped her in.

Also, the cat @ :14 is NOT happy.

  • If frankenstein had seen if the girl weighted as much as a duck and was a witch, she woulda floated and this never woulda happened...monty python if only you had made your movies sooner
