nice.. that cam timing system looks like a bitch. i own this car and got 80,000 mint cond. hope nothing goes wrong with it. i change my oil more frequently than frequent, using bmw recommended oil
A rare video showing this, by mechanics. You don't see many of these on the tube. btw you can obtain the cam tools from bmw or bmw tool shops, but they are not cheap by any means. Lots of whiners on here. Make your own videos, why don't you contribute something rather than leaching off everyone else.
Ruined this whole series with music instead of narration. Pointless shit. Just like watching a movie about cars cant learn shit like that. Bravo idiots.
The tool is to press the camshafts into the bearing strip so you can fit the bearing caps. There are special tools you must have to time these engines properly, can't just "line up marks on pulleys" like one guy said. These are very precise engines. I don't particularly like how dirty his hands are. I wash mine many times when doing rebuilds to keep dirt contamination as close to zero as possible.
@MeeShell4 You time the cams to the crank by using cam locks. If you look at about four min into the vid you will see a bar going across the head this locks the cams at TDC. This allows proper timing of the cams to the crank. The next step is to bring the VANOS to full retard and in stall the VANOS unit. It sounds easy but the S54 motor is a very complex engine.
how much would it be to rebuild a engine or buy one from a bmw 2000-2001 740i sport -thinking of getting a 2000-01 740i sport -and also when you rebuild it you can put a zero on the odometer ?
@hvcool haha but the rest of the cars components still have mileage on them so it isnt true even if the engine has been rebuilt. for example drive train, diff, gearbox, etc.
Great vid, very educational. I'm gonna stripping my M50 engine down soon so needed some tips. It 'll be my first time doing a job this big. I am wondering how ill get everything lined up again on rebuild. Do you guys use a tool of some kind? Is there a simple method of getting everything TDC?
@marcusarelius23 There is an easy way. There are timing marks on the crankshaft/ harmonic balancer and the engine block. The marks should be aligned along with the other marks on the other engire pulleys. Once they are all aligned, set your distributor/ power packs to TDC.
im going to get started rebuilding my bmw M50 engine soon, the only thing it scares me is messing with the camshafts and timing = 0 that part looks so confusing.
