They were real good. Some of their hits were taken from the fifties artists like Del Shannon. Many of the British Bands did that, including the Beatles, Stones, Led Zeppelin. I liked the Searchers.
@TheDiddlysquat COLOR TV wants too prevelant then maybe it was a documentary for people in the recording business they keep having close ups of tape recorders
The Searchers wanted a more softer voice for" Needles and Pins"Mike Penders voice was more suitable,[Black Jake] Tony Jackson wasent happy about this and caused many fall- out's between the band, Tony wanted to be the lead singer but the way the Searchers music was heading Tony voice diddent suit there new style,I myself loved Tony's attacking style of vocals and have always loved the Searchers, Thank God for You Tube and thank you for this post.Tezza the Manch.........
@spoofa20 It was mainly coz of Chris Curtis.....It was the fact that Curtis was basicly treating him like a Gobshite. When it was him who was the Gobshite. So After a huge row, Tony was sacked. Curtis took over the running of the band, and eventually they split up coz they couldn't stand him no more. I hope this has been useful to you.
@ps3matty From what i read it was tony that was becomeing too dictatorial demanding to sing lead on every song even though they werent getting hits with his vocals anymore they wanted to take it in a differant direction a folk rock direction tony stuck to his guns and continued to play r&b after he left the group .
@spacepatrolman curtiss gave jackson a warning and said if you dont cool it im going to call tito burns and youll be out of the group maybee the way they beatle booted jackson out of the group wanst nice they wouldnt tell him when the next rehersal was and let the manager tell him .
@ps3matty Chris did admit later that he never liked Tony, he always thought of the Searchers as HIS group to be steered in HIS direction, as Mike & John have never talked about the split we will never know the whole truth, though when Chris fell off stage in 1966 injuring his hand I did read he got a telegram with some choice words from Tony...
this is fantastic !! I love this classic 60s' sound ... they are so young here ..Tony Mike john and Chris .. Yesss !! thanx for posting my freind !! this is a treasure .. dont ever let it go ..x.. Lyndloo..

I love the (now) vintage recording equipment. Goes to show you don't need a lot of crap to record true talent.

My Uncle worked With Tony Jackson he even came close to givin Chris Curtis a punch after it was down to him that sacked him
ps3matty 1 year ago
@ps3matty why did they sack Tony? -he was lead voice on most of their hits, and they didn't do too much after he left.
