Last little thing - some pitches are a bit inaccurate, particularly the jumps. (Solution: take a very tiny break during a jump to avoid the slide; hear the pitch in your head before sounding it)

Add the other two singers one at a time until you're able to stay on your part without switching. If you keep switching to one part in particular, practise with just her so you can hear how the two parts sound together!

I've seen a news article saying that Catherine, second from left, has written music for a local musical play, but I've never heard it. @gingscorpio4 This is not an original Four Quarters arrangement. It is by Mac Huff. There are several web sites selling copies of it for less than $2.00 US. It is probably more practical to buy it that way rather than asking a group singing it to pass it on, since there is a copy right issue involved.

@Cvin24 It probably is SATB. As a fan of the group, I've seen pictures of the two girls singing the low parts sitting behind a piano, a pretty good indication that they read bass clef too. I'd guess they just adapted it for the voices they had. The fun little fact about this song is that their usual 2nd alto (the low voice) is singing lead. The girl dipping down for the low notes is a soprano. I think that is why she grins right after she hits the low note.
If I can make one suggestion for future posts...Make the background, the background. The lead gets drowned out at the beginning by the ooh's. Other than that, great job!

genuine personalities can be saved for individual recording artists and songwriters. they are singing a babershop song (i would know the sheet music is 20 feet from me) and if you're going to do that song, the least a group can do is let loose and put their personalities into their expressions. stage presence is a huge thing with quartets like this and i've seen many break up because people didn't enjoy how the presented themselves...
@9263GURU The song was written by Elton John, a pop artist, and Tim Rice, a Broadway guy. I'm sure neither anticipated that an arranger would attempt to make it a Barbershop song. It was written to be a pop song & did in fact go to #4 on the Billboard Hot 100. Its harmonies lend themselves to barbershop, but the depth of the emotions in the song do not. The 4Q's recorded this one too soon and the stage presence does suffer. There is video evidence elsewhere that they can both sing & act.

@thealbumcollector It is a wonderful showcase for Lindsay, as is Pachelbel's Canon. I have long considered her the "Star" of a group that is so deeply grounded in friendship that they try not to have a star. There may be a prettier voice in the group, but she is such a complete package as a singer. I think it would be advisable to re-record some of the videos if they ever made the decision to go professional (loose the sheet music and add motion). If not, just keep churning out new songs.
i must say that this song should be left to the guys. the low parts dont sound nearly as immature and thats the range it was meant for. i did this at a BHS (barbershop harmony society) event and we learned it in a few hours and it just sounded more mature as far as voices go. the vowels here were making this song unappealing to the ear. maybe stick to pop songs ladies?

It is the height of immaturity and arrogance to assume that any song belongs to one gender (unless so defined by the lyrics) or to one style of music. I will concede that this song works well with rich baritone harmonies, but that doesn't exclude women from singing it. Please check out the barbershop groups singing it. The have barbershop style and vowels. They totally miss the emotion of the song and come no where near 53,000 hits.
@Jazzbeu55 and those are probably immature guys singing it. i sing at one of the top high schools in my state and i know what good sounds like. but to have 53000 hits i figured they would have sounded older than they looked. much like what a lot of the girls i sing with sound like.

For high school girls who weren't trying to be anything other than a good local group, these 4 have built a surprising international fan base. They do well all the things that come from listening to each other--blend, balance, tight harmonies, and phrasing. They are most notable for their doo wop songs. Sorry if I sounded harsh, but this performance didn't deserve to be dismissed for being sung by young female voices.
@Jazzbeu55 we put on a nationally renowned christmas show every year, have developed broadway stars, and do overseas tours in brazil.we know international fan base. and we have 4-5 individual mens and womens quartets that sing all around our local area, a couple even have cd's out just like these ladies. these girls' sound here just isn't a barbershop sound, plus i saw NO facial expressions/ emotion. and thats the biggest part of barbershop.
@9263GURU Finally we agree on something. This group isn't barbershop, nor have they ever pretended to be barbershop. If they were to switch to barbershop, they would lose 2/3 of their fan base, which is largely doo wop or more traditional a cappella. If they ever do perform before a live audience again (???), they need to work on stage presence, but they don't need to resort to the corny antics used in barbershop . Part of their appeal is that their genuine personalities come through.

Sounds awesome! My acapella group at school is doing the same thing. When you get to the doo, doos at 9 and 37, make each one distinct, it'll ,make a big difference in the sound of that part. =]

They seem to enjoy getting ideas from fans and sometimes are able to use the suggestions. Don't worry about Peddant's comments. The long time fans have become comfortable with his sense of humor. We have all seen a lot of good suggestions made, along with a few that didn't really seem to fit the group. Anyway, let the group know what you think they could sing well.

I agree with Jazzbeu55 reg. the lead singer - didn't know her name is Lindsey. In this recording her voice stands out. In Earth Angel in the recording of the Doowop medley (taken in the stairwell), it's hard to hear the lead - I believe it's one of the sisters; she is no two from right in this video

I think it would be advisable to re-record some of the videos if they ever made the decision to go professional (loose the sheet music and add motion). If not, just keep churning out new songs.

i must say that this song should be left to the guys. the low parts dont sound nearly as immature and thats the range it was meant for. i did this at a BHS (barbershop harmony society) event and we learned it in a few hours and it just sounded more mature as far as voices go. the vowels here were making this song unappealing to the ear. maybe stick to pop songs ladies?

@9263GURU The most significant word here is "Immature." It is the height of immaturity and arrogance to assume that any song belongs to one gender (unless so defined by the lyrics) or to one style of music. I will concede that this song works well with rich baritone harmonies, but that doesn't exclude women from singing it. Please check out the barbershop groups singing it. The have barbershop style and vowels. They totally miss the emotion of the song and come no where near 53,000 hits.

@Jazzbeu55 and those are probably immature guys singing it. i sing at one of the top high schools in my state and i know what good sounds like. but to have 53000 hits i figured they would have sounded older than they looked. much like what a lot of the girls i sing with sound like.

@9263GURU I'd love to hear your school group if they are that good. For high school girls who weren't trying to be anything other than a good local group, these 4 have built a surprising international fan base. They do well all the things that come from listening to each other--blend, balance, tight harmonies, and phrasing. They are most notable for their doo wop songs. Sorry if I sounded harsh, but this performance didn't deserve to be dismissed for being sung by young female voices.

@Jazzbeu55 we put on a nationally renowned christmas show every year, have developed broadway stars, and do overseas tours in brazil.we know international fan base. and we have 4-5 individual mens and womens quartets that sing all around our local area, a couple even have cd's out just like these ladies. these girls' sound here just isn't a barbershop sound, plus i saw NO facial expressions/ emotion. and thats the biggest part of barbershop.

@9263GURU Finally we agree on something. This group isn't barbershop, nor have they ever pretended to be barbershop. If they were to switch to barbershop, they would lose 2/3 of their fan base, which is largely doo wop or more traditional a cappella. If they ever do perform before a live audience again (???), they need to work on stage presence, but they don't need to resort to the corny antics used in barbershop . Part of their appeal is that their genuine personalities come through.

Sounds awesome! My acapella group at school is doing the same thing. When you get to the doo, doos at 9 and 37, make each one distinct, it'll ,make a big difference in the sound of that part. =]

@AdrienFitzwater The Four Quarters have a Facebook page with a discussion board that provides a place to suggest songs. They seem to enjoy getting ideas from fans and sometimes are able to use the suggestions. Don't worry about Peddant's comments. The long time fans have become comfortable with his sense of humor. We have all seen a lot of good suggestions made, along with a few that didn't really seem to fit the group. Anyway, let the group know what you think they could sing well.

I was wrong; the recording of this on your new CD, "A Pocket Full of Change," is so good it wraps its arms around the listener and won't let go for hours.

@superfjerten They certainly sing the song as well as anyone I've heard do it. They didn't sing it in Lion King though. When the movie was released, they would have been 2 to 4 years old.

I agree with Jazzbeu55 reg. the lead singer - didn't know her name is Lindsey. In this recording her voice stands out. In Earth Angel in the recording of the Doowop medley (taken in the stairwell), it's hard to hear the lead - I believe it's one of the sisters; she is no two from right in this video
