  • my parents wash my rice before they cook it cause they think washing the rice will remove the dirt in the rice

  • There is some dirt and sediment that comes with the rice so it is good to wash it. Plus it takes away any excess starch in the rice

  • In all rice eating cultures I know, washing rice is a very important step in the cooking process. It removes the excess starch so the grains cook up nice and fluffy, but more importantly, removes the powdery white residue that is left behind from the processing of the rice. The residue is not very clean. (thats where all the weevil eggs are)

  • I've read that with modern rice, you don't have to worry about talcum powder or in your case weevil eggs. Honestly though, I wash my rice about half the time, depending on where I get it.

  • long grain in the USA is bland and boring. But out here in South-east Asia, the long grain reigns supreme. There are several different varieties such as jasmine and hom mali and they taste different, very fragrant, some so good you can eat it on its own. The age of the rice also makes its taste different, some times of the year you can get new harvests and they taste fresh and sweet and cook up light and fluffly, perfect for sopping up the juice of whatever y're eating with yr rice.

  • Maybe thats why we spend so much time throwing the little kernels at weddings instead of eating. The only good thing I have for our rice is making rice pudding.
