Many things in Christianity have pagan symbols incorporated with them – the Irish Cross is one such example. It does not matter what is included or not… a symbol is a symbol… if you start placing undue respect in what must compose a symbol and what should not than you are putting far too much emphasis on the earthly object and this comes dangerously close to idolatry.

Idolatry is the worship of a symbol, not worrying about it. There are dangers that are associated with symbols present in systems-- not necessarily in the images themselves (pictures are just pictures), but more so in the influence that they are associated with. Satan is a prideful creature-- and he boldly places his images where he can to show what is his.

Symbols do matter in this sense, as each one comes with a meaning. Much prophesy from the bible uses imagery and symbols to represent people or powers/kingdoms associated with the prophesy. Symbols matter in this case.

However, with this being said, I must say that I agree with you that worship of symbols is wrong (Exodus 20:4-5). And as far as I'm concerned, we should avoid the use of superfluous imagery in churches or anywhere for that matter (including on our bodies-- our clothing and on our skin (no tattoos) ). God calls us to simplicity. There is little profit in decked out things. These distract us from God's plan for us.

As far as the bent cross, there are historic designs that have incorporateed this image of Christ and the broken cross seperately. They were simply combined to make what's called the papal crucifix. some say it is supposed to represent the hilt and handguard of a crusader's sword and represent the continuing fight for christianity. It is also said to show that the weight of the cross alone cannot bear the weight of all the world's sins. & the throne- St. Peter was crucified upsidedown, tribute?
