Great song! Yess off-key, perhaps... but great content! haha. Now if there were only singing allowed during the Step 1. Check out USMLE Consult from Elsevier for a GREAT question bank!!
your idea of combining music with learning is really great. I have always wonder why remembering music songs ,in my case, is much easier than learning or why remembering other stuff is easier. Anyway thanks for what you doing. And I Have a question for you why do you call yourself Substance P ???
Read an interesting article today. It was a case-control study that showed that increased IV rates are NOT associated with cerebral edema. Nonetheless, cerebral edema is a real and dangerous possibility in DKA.
The article's Pubmed citation is as follows: Ann Emerg Med. 2008 Jul;52(1):69-75.e1. Epub 2008 Apr 3.
And coming out of DKA really does feel like a rescue from pain- I felt a zillion times better, even though I still hurt.
Some type 2s can go into DKA, generally those with low cpeptides- 5% of DKA cases are in non-type 1s. I think it was somewhat cruel, but even in DKA my doctors said maybe type 2.
And on the topic of other diabetics going into DKA, pregnant women can go into DKA too, which is generally a big problem for mother and child.
Other forms of ketoacidosis happen minus hyperglycemia
Thanks for all the clarifications. My song is mostly a simplified condensed summary of type 1 DM and DKA, and I think it is good to remember that the presentation of DKA is never classic. But we must learn the classic presentation first before learning all the exceptions...
@lantusappreciation it does happen in type 2 diabetes but thats rare and only in long standing cases where insulin is totally gone and there s a poor control of patient's sugar level..
OK, I got diagnosed with diabetes when I was in moderate DKA and just about to turn 18, so I want to mention that new cases of type 1 diabetes can happen in adults, and that adults with diabetes who have some bug (pneumonia is a big problem) and/or don't take insulin can also go into DKA.
Only a minority of people actually can smell the fruity breath, and it gets confused with alcoholic breathe in teens and adults.
Also remember to to drip glucose if you have to drip insulin to clear ketones.
I'm a mom of a type 1 kid, found this through diabetes links. Can't tell you how many kids don't get diagnosed until they are in huge trouble, anything you can do to help with that is great. Also, very cute, especially last words.

Substance P is a neuromodulatory transmitter. There's a P somewhere in my real name, and I loved the sound of "Substance P." It's badass.
