What is so very interesting about this episode is the way in which, for a brief instance, one may see the inner workings of Sherlock's mind and observe a full moment of guilt in his having to confront the reality of his own addiction in such a unexpected manner. This is especially poignant for him as it comes from a lady he seems to hold a physical attraction for. Sherlock is prone to discuss any number of topics exhaustively, but love is not one of them. Elementary?
Watching Jeremy Brett as Holmes inspired me to read all of Conan Doyles books on the master detective. Brett's performance remains my favourite to this day.
@1775LostOne@1775LostOne About 2000-3000 years ago, maybe more. Then again who says they are bad? Knowledge of what your taking and the quality is important. Tea, coffee, alcohol, tobacco, are drugs as well. Tobacco is the first killer, coffee is the 5th on the list, marjuana is the last. It can't kill you. Actually marjuana is used in a lot of treatments, in pharmacy it is the most used plant, over 300 uses... I could go on but you can learn by yourself, watch docs, get informed etc.
why did Brett have to die? Robbing us of the greatest Sherelock Holmes . This is such a great series..I 'am pissed that it ended. The blonde girl is from BBC's Pride and Prejiduce (Jane).
Trying not to think about how ill poor Jeremy Brett looks..... will cry if I do.
Opium addiction? I thought that was covered in the beginning of the Man with the Twisted Lip. Still, I have a special interest in drug addiction (one of the many reasons I find Holmes so fascinating), so this promises to be interesting to me.
I have only just heard of his passing...i am saddened..one of the greatest actors that graced our screens and the most superior Sherlock Holmes of them all in my opinion..
I loved this story when I read it in my youth and I love it even more seeing JB and DB and EH, respectively, portray Holmes and Watson. Long live Granada!!!!
Brett and Hardwick. The best Holmes and Watson ever........and Susannah Harker is so pretty that you just want to jump inside the computerscreen and kiss her. Just to hear her talking with that beautiful english accent makes me almost blushing....ha....ha
I never get bored looking at this Granada series. Sad to think that Brett has just about a year left to live here....
Yes - I was surprised Susannah Harker looked so pretty. I have only seen her in Pride and Prejudice where was supposed to the handsomest Bennet sister but I don't think the Regency style suited as much as the Victorian.
Sadly, Jeremy Brett continues to be missed. His dedication to the show and Sherlock Homes was admired by all. Brett was all but consumed with the show and the character. Remarkable performances even when it was obvious he wasn't feeling well. Bravo sir!
Interesting episode, saw it a while back. They certainly did rework it considerably; in fact in the book they didn't even bother to give a motive why Smith killed his nephew. Generally I prefer them to be as faithful to the book as possible but they did a good job here.
Haha, what experiments is Holmes doing with those colorful pieces of cloth? And, it's funny that he has to harriedly push them away and retrieve and posture when his "fair visitor" comes in! It is not the typical Holmes to make an effort for a lady!
This episode is like HEAVEN to me, being a big fan of both Jeremy Brett's Sherlock Holmes and BBC's 1995 production of Pride and Prejudice -- here we have, Jane Bennet + Holmes !!

Favourite Holmes actor, favourite Watson and one of my favourite of the canon.
Does it get any better?
Thanks for posting.
PS Clive Merrison comes a close second as Holmes in the BBC Radio 4 adaptation.

Holmes admits smoking tobacco notorious for its noisome odor. To fill a room with smoke while a lady is being made welcome is very non-Victorian.

The young lady looks like Jane from Pride and Prejudice 1995. Is it the same actress? Or am I mistaken?

Holmes, "Must look nonchalant. Must look as if i have not been watching fair client for over thirty minutes."
Hardwicke's nice, but i really do prefer Burke.
