He's ok. Kind of sounds like a girl playing, it's so delicate. This guy has no balls. I'm a blues player once and formost and I would get on stage and just crush this nerd. I remember sitting in with this guy in LA and he started playing over me with all this processed pedal shit. I beat the fuck out of the pussy right there on stage. He just went down unconcious with his "Ibanez" piece of shit and didn't move. That was the last time those guys asked me to sit in! Sonny reminds me of that punk..
@ebay9302 you put this same retarded spew on all comments...no one has heard of you ebay girl...no one ever will. We like our musicians to be humble. We can all smell your cunt...and buddy it stinks...you should wash it!
After finding a sponsors pass on the ground at the PDX Bluesfest in '09 I got to sit onstage and watch Sonny play. After he finished the set half the crowd went wild and the other half just stood there with their jaws on the ground. I got to meet him after the show and he signed my all access pass. He is a genuine person who likes his fans. Now I feel i must sell all of my guitars as I was thoroughly schooled.
Other guys have had the same effect on me...."why do I bother"...Jimi, Clapton, Mclaughlin, Beck. But in the 45 years I've been playing It has given me great joy.
@poppi286 ....ain't that the truth. I almost hate going to see guys of this caliber becuase it brings the pain of reality home.....a humbling experience to say the least.....I saw Satriani w/ Leslie West a few month's back and wondered why I even still play......but I still have fun with it regardless.
Sonny's amazing live - he will play around New Orleans during Jazzfest -at Rock n'Bowl a few nights, his own set at the fest and he may sit in with some other musicans during their sets. Truly a genius of the guitar.
I saw Sonny play at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano CA last month. The most amazing live performance by a guitar player I have ever seen! And I have seen many of the greats. This guy is a pure magician on a guitar.
Jesus, this guy is a magician and a true scientist of his instrument. Every time I listen to Sonny I just get amazed of how unique can you be with just a slide and a strat. This particular song is a masterpiece at it's best.
The first time I saw Sonny was at the CrossRoads Blues Festival. Unbelievable. I came across this and showed it to my nephew who plays the guitar. He was completely blown away. Thanks for uploading this.
gaugin and van gough need to change the oil in their shared '54 chevy pick up truck and decide to go for beignets at cafe du monde so hire sonny to get the job done.
Sonny just kills on electric slide. This is something else, a beautiful solo elec. guitar piece with independent parts. Somehow it reminds me of a mash-up of Leo Kottke & Mike Gordon, bassist from Phish (if he was drummer Jim Gordon's son), meeting Clapton backstage at a concert to jam on a 'Motherless Children' promoting his 461 Ocean Blvd. album back in '74. Yeah, I know, but that was my feeling. Obscure, but makes sense to me somehow.
you play for years and you think you know something about the instrument and then you see something like this and you realize that there are no boundaries ...
what is he doing at 0:43-0:45 to get that swell, he is not touching any knobs. he also does it at 3:10. seen him do it on a les paul as well on ON Your Way Down g'ovt mule
@Erevial search "Sonny Landreth Terraplace Resonator Demo" he does it there too and one of the top-rated comments explains how he does it. I tried it on my acoustic and it works! (not as good as electric, but still really sweet!)
@NHBluesMan thanks man! i did watch that video and tried it too- it does work ! i also found sonny himself explaining his technique at the total guitar channel- check it out !
every day... an opportunity to live, love and learn...every moment spent watching Sonny Landreth an absolute pleasure of sound, harmony and innovation...
One man playing slide guitar. Quiet beautiful and very moving. Get past the intro for a rare back stage treat with a slide guitar master and a great writer.
I love the way he spank his axe...man, it´s awesome...and the effect at 0:45???...wow man...rock needs more guitar players like him and stop the Vai`s wanna be...LOL...great guitar player...no words to explain...
I love the way he spank his axe...man...his style is plenty of harmonics...and the effect at 3:10...awesome...man...rock needs players laike him and no more steve vai wanna be....XD...a real master....god guitar...is there something else to say??? ido´t think so...
Place the slide over a good harmonic position( he is using 12 position). Don't mute on the neck side of the slide, palm mute so that nothing rings on the bridge side, and strum as hard as you can so that everything will ring on the head side. with palm down it wont ring, but lift off and it will.
@Akuyoung I love the way he spank his axe...man, it´s awesome...and the effect at 0:45???...wow man...rock needs more guitar players like him and stop the Vai`s wanna be...LOL...great guitar player...no words to explain...
@Akuyoung Go watch some Jack Pearson videos and his slide playing...Clapton doesn't know what advanced musicianship is. Not knocking Landreth, but this is a very worked out type of playing
@Chromatype "Worked out type of playing?" Have you ever seen anybody play on the other side of the slide before Sonny. . .No, because Sonny invented this style of playing.
Amazing... I thought I was a fair slide player, until I discovered Sonny and realized just how far I have to go. How the hell does he mute the strings with his right hand and get them to ring out again like that? (3.10)
this man is just ridiculous. i saw him in milwaukee over the summer and i was PRAYING he would play this, but no luck :( i love how he can make his guitar almost sound like a ukulele in some parts. simply incredible.
I just saw Sonny and the band at the Fargo Blues Festival on July 31st. I was leaning against the stage about ten feet away from him like a little kid. There is nobody better....nobody.
yes there are...many actually...Jack Pearson eats Sonny for breakfast without even trying...Sonny is not an improvisor, he is more of a lick player with a large back of tricks...big difference...listen to more people before you start claiming you know who the best is...there is NO ONE person who is the best..ever..always someone with a line you can't play
Sonny is one of a kind,in both the style of his playing and his down to earth good guy attitude he shares with everyone..just a great musician and person...see him if you can..
Notice in the chord right before (0:42), he puts as much energy as possible into the strings with a really hard pick rake while using the slide to create a 12th-fret open harmonic... Think of the string vibrating in nodes, so the string vibrates freely on both sides of the slide, but the primary node (vibration between the bridge & tailpiece) is prevented (so the fundamental frequency consists of 2 waves... one on each side of the slide.)
The string is now vibrating at 1-octave. He then takes his pinky and lightly touches at the midpoint between the slide & nut (the second octave) then again at a sub-node approximately above the front pickup.
He's hitting the harmonics on the pickups. You could also use those same exact spots (on that guitar at least, the spots differ from guitar to guitar) to produce a pinch harmonic which is common in a lot of neoclassical rock. Essentially the sound is being split over the pickups
Go stick your faces in the disposal!
