one time I did that fight and mallow (witrh 1 hp left) was the only one standing and I had no more pick me ups I did an attack and I beat her.

This fight is very difficult. I wouldn't worry too much about it. Just make sure you have one the best armor and accessories and make sure your best character (besides Mario) is battling against Dodo, and that you not only have good timing for that fight, but also adequate healing items as well. The 2nd and 3rd phases are pretty easy in my opinion. It's the Dodo solo fight that's difficult.
