(1) the bailout is not unconditional! it requires massive restructuring of the companies and a $1 dollar pay for CEOs.
(2) no bailout = unproductive workers leading to further impoverishment

Try reading "economics for real people" by Gene Calhan or "economics in one lesson" by Henry Hazlitt for an introduction into Austrian thinking... you will not be let down by the thinkers of the only school to predict the great depression!

The big 3 failing is a function of free markets. Government should only be worrying about monopolies and fraud. government intervention will create market inefficiency b/c people wouldn't know how to price systematic risk. Especially when the government isn't showing any transparency on what they're doing. With all these bail outs, the free market doesn't work properly. I agree that government did help free up the credit market, but the government should stay on the sideline for here on out.

(1) the bailout is not unconditional! it requires massive restructuring of the companies and a $1 dollar pay for CEOs.
(2) no bailout = unproductive workers leading to further impoverishment
(3) its been shown in developing countries that free markets without regulation or government intervention is devestating! free market takes care of the rich....sadly not the poor

Try reading "economics for real people" by Gene Calhan or "economics in one lesson" by Henry Hazlitt for an introduction into Austrian thinking... you will not be let down by the thinkers of the only school to predict the great depression!

This guy's not totally off base, but removing all the supports from our current economy in one fell swoop is not the answer. The fact that we have corporations "too big to fail" undermines capitalism, but the damage can't be undone simply by allowing them to go under. There has to be an intermediate step, and that's where Schiff is wrong.

If everything was still normal you would still have a hard time shifting to that intermediate step because you would have to legislate some changes which they would fight. No one ever gives up power easily except the public.

The problem I have with Schiff is that he allows for no measures at all which might help unwind a horrible situation into something manageable. It's as though it MUST happen one way only, i.e. complete devastation. While I'm not in favor of bailing out any of these crappy companies, there must be some way to more ggently unwind this crazy position we are in now, rather than some armeggedon type correction...
