The German word is Liebe, which is similar to love (as German and English have similar roots)

French though, being a latin based language uses the word Amour (or l'amour), other latin languages have the following words for love:

amor (Portuguese)

amore (Italian)

amor (Spanish)

amor (Romanian, although "dragoste" seems to be most used)

and "amor" in Latin itself

In most Germanic languages the word for poison and gift are quite similar and have been for thousands of years. The only reason we say poison is because of the Norman Invasion of England. In German they used to say vergeben (to poison) to represent that something was being given (Geben) yet that it would kill the recipient, but it meant to forgive as well and so the verb was changed to vergiften. They are both things that are given and that's pretty much the only tie.
