Usually with snakes, the female is larger than the male. Looked like a black racer.

You're probably right about the gender thing. I'm no herpetologist. As for the type, it's definitely a black rat snake. We have both here in central North Carolina and the rat snakes have a distinctive checkerboard pattern on their bellies. Black racers are a little more slender, and not nearly as docile.

depends on the species. With ratsnakes, males get larger than females.
