Yes I saw the 1940's Captain Marvel serials on You Tube. You are right the Billy Batson in those was too old and the serials were amazingly violent. I didn't think Captain Marvel killed any one, but in these he machine gunned down bad guys and threw them off bridges. I think either the serials were made for adults or the censorship rules were very laxed back then.

The Hayes Code was strictly enforced, if you think studios butcher comic books today back then they simply used the hero's name and hired the crazy old man who was running the newsstand said comic books were sold on to write the screenplay, I often wonder if our grandparents even saw the entire movie since the chapters came out weekly, we all know paying to see Batman and Robin once is robbery, but imagine having to pay to see it 15 times just to see the 10 minute serial chapter

Captain Marvel is a kid. To turn into Capt. Marvel, Billy yells out Shazam. Like it was shown here in this video.  He can also say Shazam to change back into a kid.

@thingjob Yeah the Rock was supposed to be Black Adam and directed by Peter Segal but that version has been pretty much canceled...mainly cause of the script. The Studio wanted a more serious tone in line of The Dark Knight which the writer then walked and seemingly everybody else..I also think a tone similar to the Dark Knight is wrong for Captain Marvel as well. We may still get a movie or a rumored TV series but it might be a while.

I don't think it's a good idea to dumb down these superhero cartoons. I was like three when the old batman show came out, and me and my sister loved it. If this came on back then, we would have watched something else.

And for crying out loud, Superman's faught Marvel twice in animation, and he won both times. It's about even, exept Superman is more experienced. Just being magical doesn't negate Superman's powers (unless it's something specific that does).

They do publish Captain Marvel Comics, they have to publish them under the name SHAZAM since Marvel copyrighted the name Captain Marvel for a character they created and it would result in yet another lawsuit over copyright infringment. The story is quite funny, DC is infamous for it's policies starting out in which their writers and artists gave up all rights to their creations and for suing anyone who was a threat to their sales for copyright infringment

I like Freddy and all, but as CM3. Aside from Trials of Shazam, the breif JSA arc in which Shazam returned and depowered the Marvels, and Cry for Justice, not much has really been done for them. Blackest Night will bring back Power of Shazam for a single issue with Black Lantern Osiris, but like I said, aside from the random storyline here or there, the Marvel Family as a whole is an uptapped source of material for DC comics. We have god knows how many Batman titles; Can't we have 1 CM title?

One reason I think DC doesn't do much with Captain Marvel is his last major Comic book was published in 1953, and DC's been trying to distance itself from the camp of the 50s and 60s. However if they want a kid-friendly superhero, Captain Marvel's the best bet (one of his comics from 1950 was called: Captain Marvel and the Good Humor Man guest staring Jack Carlson and the Captain Marvel Club Boys, I'm deadly serious on that)

Captain Marvel was also the first superhero to make it to the big screen, he had a 1941 serial called the Adventures of Captain Marvel staring Tom Tyler as the Captain and Frank Coghlan Jr. as Billy Batson (although Billy is suppose to be a kid he looked more like he was in his early 20s in the movie)

DC has beenpublishing Captain Marvel Comics, and cap guest stars in story arcs however they have to use SHAZAM as the title of the comics to avoid a confrontation with Marvel who also have a character named Captain Marvel. As for why there are two Captain Marvels: DC sued Fawcett on the grounds of copyright infringment and got the comics pulled from the market, Marvel then created a new character and copyright the name. DC then bought the rights to the original character
