@DumblyBrilliant It depends which Westerbeke it is! There are far worse engines than that nowadays, engines with crappy timing belts for example and drive-by-wire. Possibly the top contender for a bad engine is the Italian job with unit injectors. The two cylinder model is not so bad but trying to synchronise FOUR is a factory job. The engines that went into vans were so hated by the main dealers that they would destroy (rev up) problem engines that were in guarantee and get a fresh one.

Westerbeak engines are the kiss of death for a boat in the UK. No one will touch them.
