just wanted to point out that at 7:35 ish you made a spelling mistake on number 9. Apart from that....great vid dude, thanks, just what i was looking for.
@WildForrestMonkeyBoy no, this shit is fake this isnt photoshop i know that the guy photoshopd the image and then called it a new thing called gimp cos he links bondage
@MrManguy17 Love you too, dude. Feel free to drop by my "linked bondage" studio any time and I'll show you how to use the Gimp. Should be good for a laugh.
@dopeassdork Nah. They're wild strawberries from our yard. The wild ones are just smaller than the ones you get in the shop. We have raspberries, too, but they grow in thorny bushes, not flat on the ground.
@sonicfan811 Ah, I see you caught my carefully hidden pro-zombie agenda... Maybe you should come around to my place to talk about it over... a bite to eat.
How when i open my cut out image into a new background, how do i keep it as just the bit i cut out when i move the image? (as soon as i move it, i am moveing the cut out section so that i get the background instead of the image - so in my case, i get a horse shape, but just the background/some parts of the horse from the original photo) it's kind of hard to explain..
@megandsirus Not sure if I understand you. Sounds like you may have the layer mask selected instead of the image. Bring up the layers dialogue (Ctrl / Option plus the "L" key). You'll see your layer has a small colour thumbnail (the image) and a black and white thumnail (the layer mask) at the end. Try clicking on the colour one and see if that helps.
Congrats on a truly well-made instructional video. You present the info in easy to follow steps, level of detail is on the mark, you repeat the important steps with clear emphasis (nice touch), your instructions are pre-written and well-thought out and the music is unobtrusive. Of the dozen or so videos I've watched on doing "removing background in GIMP" yours stands out as the best presentation so far. Thank-you
can't you just use the scissors? invert the selection, feather it, and cut? it's pretty near perfect and as far as i'm concerened i don't like to be this specific. unless it's important. there is always the fuzzy brush as well.
But great job. another bit of information to add to the gimp mind
oh BTW great job on Tutorial. i liked the way it flowed. unlike other people who. type everything on a notepad as there doing it. wasting valuable time.
@science247 Thanks! Yes, there's always a bunch of ways of making a selection (quickmask, flood tool, ctrl+lasso select, magic scissors etc). Really, the art is to know them all, including their strengths and weaknesses and combine the tools best suited to the image. That's a bit much for a beginner tute, though, so I stuck to one approach. :)
@Cheesecake614 - Says "Cheesecake614" lol! Go watch pulp fiction and be afraid... Still, at least it doesn't sound like a poster store ("Photo Shop"?!). heheh
ok here we go again with the blue background. How the fuck did the background become blue? Help me dammit. I'm getting frustrated through this bullshit. People need to work on their fucking instructions.
@londonlad777 you dont click on the brusg tool: once the background goes blue you are automatically enabled to brush over it. You can adjust the scale of the brush within the 'foreground select' tab area.
@WildForrestMonkeyBoy ..."Feel free to post your more exciting version... :)"...bahahahahha...top answer....just downloading gimp now...good vid maaan....
You have to save it as an image format vegas recognises that also has an alpha. .png is your best option, or if you have trouble with that try .tif. I think there's an option you need to use in Vegas to enable it, too.
Ironically, although I actually own a legal copy of Vegas pro on Windows, I haven't used either in years since switching to Linux, so my memories a bit rusty. Anyway, hope this helps!
hey. have you ever used a photo mask? Would you be able to make a tutorial? I can't find one. you know what I mean by photo mask. Like you google photo mask and they give you (usually) a black shape and you use it to make your picture that shape. I have no clue how to do it in gimp! this was very informative.
Glad it helped! There's other ways too, like using the path tool to trace the edge and then selecting "Path to selection". This method is fast and easy for new users to understand though, when used on images with a pretty clear difference between foreground and background.

@PotatoRichards Linux with a KDE desktop. Mac / Windows are a bit limited for me. It's cool if they suit you though. Whatever works.
