I've owned the Genesis for 1 montha. I've ridden in BMWs, Mercedes, Lexus, Infinitis, Acuras, VWs, and Volvos. Admittedly the European cars have stiffer handling & more sporty performance feel so if you're looking for this, the Genesis is not for you. But for you critics who think the Genesis is not as smooth as Lexus, Infiniti, or Acura-you are delusional. Smoothness of ride & quietness of cabin are on par with the Japanese competitors. I dare you to take a blindfolded ride to prove my point

Also, the idea that Jaguars aren't very reliable is old history. I hate to break it to you but this isn't the 1970s anymore. I've owned two Jaguars and know many people who have owned Jaguars... Ever since Sir John Egan sorted them out in the early 80s, they've been as reliable as anything made in Germany or Asia.
If you want to pay more for the same thing, then by all means buy a Lexus. Lots of people pay more for a prestige name but the funny thing is that Lexus really isn't a prestige name. It is a jumped-up Toyota.
If you want to spend $90,000 on a car, then buy a Jaguar or an Audi and you'll not only get a prestigious name but you'll also get a combination of precision engineering and performance that Toyota can only dream about.
Some of the low-end Audis share components with VWs, but *only* the low-end ones. In fact, Audi existed long before VW bought them out. So they are a distinct brand with a distinct history. Lexus is simply a marketing construct by Toyota. It literally only exists because Toyota marketing people believed there was a limit to how much money Americans would spend on a car with the Toyota badge on it.

Audi has some driving pleasure but not much the top of the line Quattro AWD cars dont let you enjoy the drive, however they are fairly reliable.

I agree that Bmws arnt reliable but you cannot getaway from the fact that Mercedes-Benz have the best safety record and reliability record of any automaker to date.

The problem with the C and E Mercedes is that they are cheaply built and they don't handle well. Even the ones with the powerful AMG-tuned engines... look at the Top Gear Power Board... an E63 AMG with over 500bhp couldn't keep up with a poxy little Porsche Boxter.

BTW, the Genesis mechanicals are all new. the Tau engine makes 385hp in 4.6L form and 430 in 5.0L. Normally aspirated...

I think you will also find mercedes CL600 and SL600 V12s shut down to 6 cylinders under slow driving, and the V8 CL500 and SL600 shut down to 4 cylinders and why would someone with a coupe be bothered about fuel economy?

You can buy a 5 year old ///AMG for a little more or less than a brand new Hyundai, and in 10 years time the ///AMG will be worth more and in better condition, Mercedes V8s are the most reliable V8s ever made, check out Mercedes Trucks and other commercial vehicles they are the best.

I thought the Car and Driver guy was rude to his "friend from the swim club" he totally slams the cars rough road characteristics, complains about the lack of paddle shifter, slams them about how they did themselves a favor by not putting a hyundai badge on the front, talks how much inferior the handling is to the "M" , ribs him a couple good times on that about the car being soft, then says how 17/25 gas mileage is o.k. instead of good. Bet the guy is glad he moved to Cali.
Lincoln, Infiniti, Volvo, and Acura are all Premium brands though. Though I do agree that this Hyundai is better than what those guys have to offer. Genesis > Volvo S60/S80, Genesis > Infiniti M/Q, Genesis > Acura RL, etc.

Car and Driver has horrible perceptions. This is a sporty / family style vehicle. I personally absolutely love it. I dont care about the fold down rear seats, I love the interface and sound system, I personally drove one and felt very comfortable I am 6'5" 270. I dont drive hwy much, it performs well on the back roads and cost 10-20 grand less than the cars that old buzzard from car and driver were comparing it to. The guy from Hyundai should feel proud and he gave great answers.
car and driver is obviously biased more towards sport, which is understandable. However, they often almost completely deemphasis the biggest single factor in a car shopper's criteria. Price. One can drive off a Hyundai for $32,000. Or you can load it up and have a $42,000 car. Can't say that for BMW, Infiniti, Mercedes, etc. This car makes more sense as a less well equipped large sport sedan, where it blows away the competition in price.
I couldn't agree more. In the luxury segment, I think that comfort, ammentities and the ability to travel great distances with ease and reliability trumps any 0-60 or slalem tests. I've owned some pretty powerful cars, and never have I timed 0-60 (seriously). I wouldn't be drag racing Lexus' and Infinitis. I love this car, by the way!

yeah...that does sound like a good idea...although it may have been difficult/expensive to come up w/ an entire line up for their 'luxury brand'...plus the onerous task of establishing a brand associated with that. Nonetheless, a major victory for hyundai in my books.
Definitly agreed with you when the Genesis first debuted, but since I have considered the following. Hyundai is trying something new by offering luxury vehicles in the same name as their economy cars. Many of us have a stigma of what Hyundai quality is since in their debut in the 90's they were crap. Since like 2003 they really have come a long long way. The Hyundai people are doing something new and unique and the car is quality and frankly the best 40K car available.

Hyundai almost launched the Genesis under its own brand, but they decided to cut that cost too. It kind of defeats the purpose doesn't it? Instead of introducing a new brand with new luxury products, they simply made a bigger Hyundai that will go to Hyundai dealers. That doesn't make it an amazing new luxury sedan. That makes it a wannabe.

It's amazing how Hyundai performed this year with Genesis and all other models. Hyundai truly had the most successful year in the U.S. and around the world. The success of Genesis just shows that people just don't care about prestige that are associated with badges.
In a way, Japanese automakers created that culture during the last 20 years. With success of Lexus, many people want to jump on the Hyundai wagon as they did with Lexus 20 years ago.
I don't get it. Why would you want to open up a whole new brand and division for just one model? Hyundai did the right thing to stay with Hyundai.
Now days, consumers are savy enough to know that luxury brands don't mean anything unless cars back it up with quality, value and warranties. And, Hyundai backs it up with all those.

@henryleder The simple fact is the running gear on the Hyundai is a decade old the engine is old, the only part that is relatively new is the body design and maybe interior, they try to copy the Germans and fail, they try to out price them and fail, lastly if you want a fast, reliable, classy and good looking coupe or saloon go with the Germans its not that im trying to put anyone down its what everyone knows and im just saying it, anyone i know will say buy German, they are the best its a fact.
Took a spin for the first time, not too bad, been thinking about an Infiniti or a Merc... I have a TL and wanted something a little softer. I'll definately keep the TL, she's my toy, but this so far is better than the Merc or the M. Far better priced... As for performance... didn't like the performance on my TL either, not until I changed the suspension and added the mods to it as well, so if anyone's looking for a sportscar feel, drop in some TEIN coil-overs, add a supercharger....
I've been in BMW M5's, 760Li's, Etc. And I own an 05 X5 3.0, and as far as suspension goes, because that's the real make or breaker about this car ( Genesis ), If you've driven an X5, that's what this car feels like, but take into account that it's a mid/large-size sedan. It's got a better suspension than any BMW Sedan rolling without Active Roll Stabilization.
People are very judgmental on the Hyundai Genesis. Also who the fuck buys these cars to race them on a track? are we honestly judging luxury passenger cars based on track numbers. Anyways its really surprising Hyundai has really improved and its quality, reliability, and design is really nice.

Ya i use to make fun of Hyundai a few years ago especially at Auto shows since no one ever seems to go their cars to look at them, but now I really want to go to a Hyundai dealership and check this car out and also the Coupe. =D Hyundai is going leaps and bounds. from an eco commute car to a an actual competitor with the major brands. This is like Samsung competing with Sony . Samsung makes really amazing products. Praise to Hyundai automobiles for making the Genesis platform. = )
If I worked for Hyundai I would have taken the final step and re-branded the car under a different, more luxury oriented make name. Essentially do what Lexus does for Toyota. It's just so lame to have an ultra luxury sedan and then tell people "it's a Hyundai".
It's expensive to license an entirely different brand and modify the distribution and dealer networks to accommodate the new brand. It probably wasn't worth it for just one car.
A few gripes I have with this car are: No auto-assist door closure, no rear auto-up-down windows, no passenger cooled seat, no lumbar/thigh adjustment.
Other than that, everything else is phenomenal. For the price, you cannot go wrong. Its very roomy, and the Hyundai style I-drive is so easy to use. This car is impressive and I believe Hyundai will have a clear winner with this car. I love Lexus, BMW and Benz, but with such a pricing difference, its hard to tell who will sell what these days.

Yeah for sure. I can't stand how easily people get sucked into buying a super-expensive car, because they think it'll magically last longer. My friend bought a Mercedes a year and a half ago, and bragged his ass off about it. Now? It's literally in the shop every 2 months because things are breaking left right and center. Me? I have a month left on my Tiburon V6. 5 years, no tuneups. My mechanic just looked at it last week and said "Car's in fantastic shape, nothing wrong with it." LOL!

the REAL reason why the Hyundai logo isnt on this car is because the REAAL company WAS called Genesis but then when it was imported to america, they couldnt make new factories for the company Genesis so they came up with the idea of calling it a Hyudai... And the Genesis company came from the Hyundai.

I've owned the Genesis for 1 montha. I've ridden in BMWs, Mercedes, Lexus, Infinitis, Acuras, VWs, and Volvos. Admittedly the European cars have stiffer handling & more sporty performance feel so if you're looking for this, the Genesis is not for you. But for you critics who think the Genesis is not as smooth as Lexus, Infiniti, or Acura-you are delusional. Smoothness of ride & quietness of cabin are on par with the Japanese competitors. I dare you to take a blindfolded ride to prove my point

Also, the idea that Jaguars aren't very reliable is old history. I hate to break it to you but this isn't the 1970s anymore. I've owned two Jaguars and know many people who have owned Jaguars... Some of the low-end Audis share components with VWs, but *only* the low-end ones. In fact, Audi existed long before VW bought them out. So they are a distinct brand with a distinct history. Lexus is simply a marketing construct by Toyota. It literally only exists because Toyota marketing people believed there was a limit to how much money Americans would spend on a car with the Toyota badge on it.

I've owned classic Mercedes before and while they're nice cars in many ways, they're too soft for any sort of driving fun.
The C-class and E-class are mass-produced rubbish. They handle like crap and they aren't particularly reliable. Their 4matic isn't even proper AWD.
I've owned two Jaguars and they've been bullet-proof when it comes to reliability.

The problem with the C and E Mercedes is that they are cheaply built and they don't handle well. Even the ones with the powerful AMG-tuned engines... look at the Top Gear Power Board... an E63 AMG with over 500bhp couldn't keep up with a poxy little Porsche Boxter.
As for Jaguars being "the most troublesome and unreliable cars ever"... you're just embarrassing yourself. That hasn't been true since Callaghan was PM.

BTW, the Genesis mechanicals are all new. the Tau engine makes 385hp in 4.6L form and 430 in 5.0L. Normally aspirated...

Car and Driver has horrible perceptions. This is a sporty / family style vehicle. I personally absolutely love it. I dont care about the fold down rear seats, I love the interface and sound system, I personally drove one and felt very comfortable I am 6'5" 270. I dont drive hwy much, it performs well on the back roads and cost 10-20 grand less than the cars that old buzzard from car and driver were comparing it to. The guy from Hyundai should feel proud and he gave great answers.

car and driver is obviously biased more towards sport, which is understandable. However, they often almost completely deemphasis the biggest single factor in a car shopper's criteria. Price. One can drive off a Hyundai for $32,000. Or you can load it up and have a $42,000 car. Can't say that for BMW, Infiniti, Mercedes, etc. This car makes more sense as a less well equipped large sport sedan, where it blows away the competition in price.

I couldn't agree more. In the luxury segment, I think that comfort, ammentities and the ability to travel great distances with ease and reliability trumps any 0-60 or slalem tests. I've owned some pretty powerful cars, and never have I timed 0-60 (seriously). I wouldn't be drag racing Lexus' and Infinitis. I love this car, by the way!

Good car (i own one) but it has some issues. For example - very poor ipod integration and old map versions. Other than that - excellent car.

overall for the price this car is one of the best out there i think. my only pick is this..hyndaui is not a luxury car company like lexus, acura. etc.. people i know and i think i speak for alot will think that if you buy this car and people know its a hyndaui your gonna look cheap and thirsty. hyndaui should have came out with a luxury car company called geneses. and then marketed it under a new company. like infinity to nissan. that way it wouldnt be hyndaui-which is synomonous w broke/cheap

Ford Focus, Mercedes c class, BMW 3 series, Toyota Avalon, VW Jetta, and the list continues...Cheap is relative, and intelligence too. I proffer to drive a 3.8 lambda with 370HP Genesis any day than driving a cheap dirty common BMW 3 series. Have u driven a Genesis...? no...so STFU.

yeah...that does sound like a good idea...although it may have been difficult/expensive to come up w/ an entire line up for their 'luxury brand'...plus the onerous task of establishing a brand associated with that. Nonetheless, a major victory for hyundai in my books.

Definitly agreed with you when the Genesis first debuted, but since I have considered the following. Hyundai is trying something new by offering luxury vehicles in the same name as their economy cars. Many of us have a stigma of what Hyundai quality is since in their debut in the 90's they were crap. Since like 2003 they really have come a long long way. The Hyundai people are doing something new and unique and the car is quality and frankly the best 40K car available.

Hyundai almost launched the Genesis under its own brand, but they decided to cut that cost too. It kind of defeats the purpose doesn't it? Instead of introducing a new brand with new luxury products, they simply made a bigger Hyundai that will go to Hyundai dealers. That doesn't make it an amazing new luxury sedan. That makes it a wannabe.

It's amazing how Hyundai performed this year with Genesis and all other models. Hyundai truly had the most successful year in the U.S. and around the world. The success of Genesis just shows that people just don't care about prestige that are associated with badges.
In a way, Japanese automakers created that culture during the last 20 years. With success of Lexus, many people want to jump on the Hyundai wagon as they did with Lexus 20 years ago.
It's paying off for everyone. That's good.

I don't get it. Why would you want to open up a whole new brand and division for just one model? Hyundai did the right thing to stay with Hyundai.
Now days, consumers are savy enough to know that luxury brands don't mean anything unless cars back it up with quality, value and warranties. And, Hyundai backs it up with all those.

@henryleder The simple fact is the running gear on the Hyundai is a decade old the engine is old, the only part that is relatively new is the body design and maybe interior, they try to copy the Germans and fail, they try to out price them and fail, lastly if you want a fast, reliable, classy and good looking coupe or saloon go with the Germans its not that im trying to put anyone down its what everyone knows and im just saying it, anyone i know will say buy German, they are the best its a fact.

Took a spin for the first time, not too bad, been thinking about an Infiniti or a Merc... I have a TL and wanted something a little softer. I'll definately keep the TL, she's my toy, but this so far is better than the Merc or the M. Far better priced... As for performance... didn't like the performance on my TL either, not until I changed the suspension and added the mods to it as well, so if anyone's looking for a sportscar feel, drop in some TEIN coil-overs, add a supercharger....

I've been in BMW M5's, 760Li's, Etc. And I own an 05 X5 3.0, and as far as suspension goes, because that's the real make or breaker about this car ( Genesis ), If you've driven an X5, that's what this car feels like, but take into account that it's a mid/large-size sedan. It's got a better suspension than any BMW Sedan rolling without Active Roll Stabilization.

People are very judgmental on the Hyundai Genesis. Also who the fuck buys these cars to race them on a track? are we honestly judging luxury passenger cars based on track numbers. Anyways its really surprising Hyundai has really improved and its quality, reliability, and design is really nice.

Ya i use to make fun of Hyundai a few years ago especially at Auto shows since no one ever seems to go their cars to look at them, but now I really want to go to a Hyundai dealership and check this car out and also the Coupe. =D Hyundai is going leaps and bounds. from an eco commute car to a an actual competitor with the major brands. This is like Samsung competing with Sony . Samsung makes really amazing products. Praise to Hyundai automobiles for making the Genesis platform. = )

If I worked for Hyundai I would have taken the final step and re-branded the car under a different, more luxury oriented make name. Essentially do what Lexus does for Toyota. It's just so lame to have an ultra luxury sedan and then tell people "it's a Hyundai".

It's expensive to license an entirely different brand and modify the distribution and dealer networks to accommodate the new brand. It probably wasn't worth it for just one car.

A few gripes I have with this car are: No auto-assist door closure, no rear auto-up-down windows, no passenger cooled seat, no lumbar/thigh adjustment.
Other than that, everything else is phenomenal. For the price, you cannot go wrong. Its very roomy, and the Hyundai style I-drive is so easy to use. This car is impressive and I believe Hyundai will have a clear winner with this car. I love Lexus, BMW and Benz, but with such a pricing difference, its hard to tell who will sell what these days.

Yeah for sure. I can't stand how easily people get sucked into buying a super-expensive car, because they think it'll magically last longer. My friend bought a Mercedes a year and a half ago, and bragged his ass off about it. Now? It's literally in the shop every 2 months because things are breaking left right and center. Me? I have a month left on my Tiburon V6. 5 years, no tuneups. My mechanic just looked at it last week and said "Car's in fantastic shape, nothing wrong with it." LOL!

the REAL reason why the Hyundai logo isnt on this car is because the REAAL company WAS called Genesis but then when it was imported to america, they couldnt make new factories for the company Genesis so they came up with the idea of calling it a Hyudai... And the Genesis company came from the Hyundai.
