If memory serves, the number symbols we use (1, 2, 3) are actually Arabic, derived from Indian numerals. They spread along with the Indian system of mathematics that would later become used in Europe (and consequentially all European colonies/lands conquered.)

Since China developed their own version of mathematics prior to this, they have their own numerals which were later adopted by Japan. (Even though today Arabic numerals are used in both countries too.)

Numbers are only in Kanji. The hiragana is sometimes shown above the kanji at the top to show kids how to read it whon haven't learned their 1st grade kanji yet. :D
