I recently discovered your uploads. It's nice to see with each passing video your confidence level as skill improve. I'm a fan of anyone who plays music with their dog nearby.
Okay, this video just done it...I'm OFFICIALLY a fan! Damn, you must have some cool parents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, ...SOMEBODY to have turned you on to the music you choose to play!!! I guess ECLECTIC is the word I'm looking for, and you definitely inherited some mad talent!
@Ryan102077 Haha, hey! Thanks SO much for your comments!! =D
Haha, as for the family members...I don’t think any of them are really into the music that I am. Well, I like a such a huge variety, but nobody in my family really does much with music. My mom played the saxophone way back when...and piano. haha, my inspiration comes from the random music that I come across! ;D
your awesome great groove especially the occaisonal look up natural not self conscious with a little humor wish wonderful stage prescence wish you were my bass player so talented.
My last little bit of unsolicited advise: Your Laguna is a standard 34" scale. If you were my student I would nag you into trying out a 3/4 scale bass. Paul McCartney's Beatle-bass is a 30" and bassists for the Stones and Cream and others play(ed) 30" as well.
A test is to see if you can run up and down between the 2nd and 5th frets without changing hand position. Spend some time in a music store trying them out. It'll increase your speed and smooth out position changes.
OK now you're starting to sound like an idiot. I defended one of your comments. But suggesting someone scrap a bass they're comfortable with and change damn near every aspect of their playing is going too far. And then steering them to a specific type of bass because Paul McCartney plays it is beyond absurd. Here's some unsolicited advice for you: keep your unsolicited advice to yourself. Andy just keep doing what you're doing with the gear you have and your own style will emerge.
@hooptyndablowfish Can you even read? I suggested she TRY a 3/4 scale bass to see if would speed up her scales, and told her of a test. Pretend she was using her brother's golf clubs, wouldn't you agree that she should try some fitted clubs?
I brought up the Beatle-bass to remove the stigma of thinking a 30" is a "KIDS" guitar. I find the Hofner too narrow for longer than average fingers. I bought a Gibson Flying V because I had trouble with open chords on my 335. Jeeze.
I agree this fascist guy is an idiot. If I had an instructor who thought it was alright nag me into changing my bass so I could be like Paul McCartney I'd find another instructor.
@Alphawolfeable Yes, I'm an idiot. She plays well, but watch her 'Birthday' video and tell me she shouldn't be using a shorter scale bass for that song.
Do you think she could pass the test I suggested of running a pattern of 2nd to 5th frets up and down all for strings without changing hand position? Did you ever see a professional guitarist changing guitars for different songs on stage?
She's good, but can she play better on a 3/4? Why not find out?
@fascistcat I can think of scores of musicians who make more money than they know what to do with who only play Fender P basses (and they swap each song). There are probably more songs written on P basses than all other basses combined. No telling how many people learn on P basses. To play them people do what they have to do. Doesn't matter if they are male or female. And if that means position changes so be it. I'm not sure what your hangup with position changes is anyway.
@Alphawolfeable Position Changes: Here's a clip that is close enough to what I was talking about. See- watch?v=tXvkiNPwYIU.
It's not about position changes, it's about not having to change positions to execute a scale. If you can't comfortably play a 1-2-3-4 one finger per fret, the fret spacing is too wide (ie- try a 3/4 scale).
I don't know why you're dissuading her from trying a 3/4, but if she set you up as some sort of arbiter of 'right and wrong,' who am I to argue?
@undathebridge - I think when he said key and tempo don't matter he meant those are two you can alter without necessarily wrecking the musicality of the song. I don't think he was saying to completely disregard them. Even if you don't know what key you're playing in you're still playing in one key or another. And a newer player will usually play at a slower tempo they can handle. His point was to ignore the theory geeks who never have anything positive to say.
@hooptyndablowfish So true! Theory geeks are like the dementors in the Harry Potter films. The room goes cold when they show up and they can suck the life out of you in a matter of minutes.
Ignore any comments that you get here regarding the key you're playing in. Key and tempo don't matter.
The key is going to depend on the vocal range of whoever you end up playing with.
Unsolicited advice - practice 'standing up' as you'll find that you may have to adjust your hand position based on the angle of your wrist. You do a lot of 4-fret reaches (Birthday) where Paul McCartney would do quick position changes instead.
@undathebridge I'm totally serious. She could put a capo on the 2rd fret and do a 10% reduction in the beats per minute. She could raise the whole thing a perfect fifth.
It just depends on the venue and accompaniment. See '/watch?v=gG47gS8xqRM' for the E-man redoing Peace, Love and Understanding.
If you were teaching a beginner a I-IV-V rock bit on guitar, why not change the key for easier chord changes? C-G-C may be tougher than E-A-E, so why fight it?
There are two schools of thought. One says play it EXACTLY like the original. The other says play what sounds right. In my opinion Andy did the right thing playing what she thought sounded best. The more you play by feel the more likely you are to venture off and create your own new music. I get bored listening to people play exact copies. If I want to hear the original I'll listen to the original.
@hooptyndablowfish i agree, playing by feeling is fine. i just don't know how a musician can say key and tempo don't matter. if you're jamming with some guys and they tell you to solo in the key of C, you should at least have a point of reference. furthermore, when you get into more intricate genres like jazz, key and tempo become very important, especially when you're trying to get away from conventional/obvious melodies and progressions.
@undathebridge I don't understand why my 'key' comments are controversial. While 'staying in key' is essential, what key the song is played in is not. Obviously, everybody playing together should be in the same key.
I've had similar arguments with a friend when I wanted to rewrite Bohemian Rhapsody for one guitar and a bass. He said, "I think we should play it like it is." When asked if he would be hitting Freddie Mercury's high notes, the project was abandoned.
@fascistcat - If you were to watch her other videos you'd see she plays the same way standing up. In fact she's standing in majority of her videos. She seems to have pretty good hand strength. I noticed in her earlier videos her timing could be off which indicates her muscle memory hasn't fully developed. But then she's shown dramatic improvement in her more recent videos. I think she's coming along pretty well. She's also got good taste in the music she covers. :)
@CrankUpTheAmps No problem. I'm always bad with remembering that too. What type of bass is that? My Yamaha is getting old and I'm in need of replacing it. I like the sound you get from yours.
@CrankUpTheAmps Are you kidding? The tune is in A minor. Which musical universe are you playing in? Nice job though. Are you ready for the Live At The El Mocambo or Hollywood High versions?
@CrankUpTheAmps Well judging by some of the TABs out there you're better off with using your ear.
However, I can't for the life of me imagine how you arrived at Eb. It's the biggest musical leap you can possibly be from A! If you don't have a tuner, get yourself over to a piano and learn what is what and where everything is. Keep up the good work.
Great job! One of my fave EC songs. @ luvabanana, before he was Elvis Costello, he was a data entry clerk, shocking, I know, he barely looked the type. :P
love a bit of elvis c try accidents will happen can send you the tab if you want a little bit to much distortion me thinks but otherwise good keep jamming
back in the late 80's, elvis costello's dad lived in the next street, i often used to see elvis costello walking past. he had a strange walk and always carried a old leather briefcase. i always wondered what he carried in it. ..... anyhow, i'm liking your sounds. really trick.
his dad was a big band leader and musican, famous in his own right, he went under the name of 'Day Costello'. that's where elvis took his name. i was born and grew up in a very small town (Heston, England), Jimmy page was also born there. my mom knew his mom as he and his family lived near by. they moved before i was born. i sound like i'm name dropping, i'm certainly not, just that so many musicians came from there and surrounding areas. must be something in the water? ;-)
Excellent stuff. You've a lovely feel for bass and melodic playing. Great choice of song! Check out XTC's Colin Moulding, or The Jam's Bruce Foxton for some truly wonderful bass lines :) The world of music is sadly very short of good female bass players like you... Really enjoyed your playing.
@CrankUpTheAmps On a serious note, it's good to see more females getting into bass, drums, and guitar. I've been playing for a long time, and when I started, girls just didn't do that sort of thing. Can't tell how long you've been playing, but you sound great and you have some very eclectic musical taste - even obscure stuff like elvis costello! I'm impressed!
Thank you for your covers. I enjoy them. There's a real feeling in your playing. And I use them to improve...But, sorry for my English that might be as lousy as my technique.
I couldn’t find any other covers of this song, either!!!...tabs either...probably because he’s so good that he’s just able to improv. all of those little bits! ;D haha, I had to tab it out and read it while playing!! :P Thanks again!!
Your smile at 1:06 is awesome! I can just imagine you thinking, "hah! nailed it!" :D Excellent cover of an excellent song. I've been wanting to pick up the bass and after watching you play, I'm really tempted to go buy one now.
@jaelonquixote HA! What an awkward smile! ;P Thank you so much for your comment! You really should at least go try out a bass somewhere if you can!!!!!!! I’ve been having a blast with it!! :D
You peak my interest. Not only are you a start up bassist (I love watching progress), but I love your song choice. Your striking hand seems a bit tense to me, though that might just be my imagination. If it isn't I'd advise trying to relax it, especially if you plan on playing in long stints. It'll murder your forearms.
@KeithRitchie1 Thanks! I can't remember if I replied to your comment...I just use a little 15-watt Line 6 bass amp and I record the bass audio and the video at the same time with my Sony Handycam video camera! :)
that explains a lot, piano helped with early hand eye coordination and the oboe helps with tonality , note control, rhythm, and of course the ability to read music which are all very important for a bass player.i played the trombone for a few years in school but i smashed it up pretty good beating some kid up with it for making fun of band nerds and the parents wouldn't buy me another one and the school refused to loan me one after that,so... that was the end of that. keep it up,
what else do you play (piano,keyboard,guitar,ect..). you have really good finger movement and i find it hard to believe you've only been playing since 3-09, unless you practice the scales a lot, just curious?
@kirk7613 Hey, thanks for your comment! I played piano for a couple of years about 11 years ago...didn't like taking lessons a whole lot. I liked just making up my own stuff much better! ;D
I've also been playing oboe for 9 years now...I'm sure that's helped me in some way or another!
Not bad at all.....been checking out your vdos and your a very good bassists, and i like the cute faces you make at the camera when u play......keep it up,,,,btw the marquess song very good.....cant find the tabs anywhere though, you learn the songs by ear? whats your secret?
Hey hey, i see you still hate playing open notes, great job but i think you missed a little bit of octave bars, oh well, great job as usual, please play open notes, you make me tired watching you play : D
@ozzthorn258 You caught me! : / I won't lie...open notes aren't always my favorite! I tabbed this song out myself, so I'm sure it's the farthest thing from the way it's actually supposed to be played, too! :P I did hit a couple of open notes in this cover, though! ahaha
Sometimes my open notes just sound out of tune...and if I adjust, everything else is out. Can't win. :P But I will try to use the opens more in the future! haha, thanks for your advice! :)
@CrankUpTheAmps i know what you mean sounding outta tune, but you have to be careful note to let other strings ring out aswell, could be your problem, sometimes bass players use harmonix, pressing directly on the fret bar, not just before it, making cover attempts sound outta tune, it's a learned ear thing, but you got the skills so keep getting better, if you like i can run a tutorial on open note progressions if you like, just let me know : )
@xOmumblesOx Yes! That's the other reason why I somewhat dislike the open notes! :P Maybe someday I'll actually know what I'm doing with my bass and I'll be able to tab and play things the easy way! :P
I have played bass for 27 years . I can usually find something to pick on and say oh you could have done that better but here I 'm struggling. Really good. Well played!!

@TheBommer29 Hey man, thanks for your comment...yeah, I should have adjusted the amp a bit more before recording this. :P

That's one of the best bass covers I've heard! Fantastic work! I'd love to see it tabbed!!!!

Love your technique, girl. Your presence and demeanor is pretty terrific too! Thanks for sharing this.

Thank you for your covers. I enjoy them. There's a real feeling in your playing. And I use them to improve...But, sorry for my English that might be as lousy as my technique.

God I need to play more often.
kaerfehtdeelb 1 year ago
@kaerfehtdeelb Hey man, thanks for your comment!

5150RDH 1 year ago
that explains a lot, piano helped with early hand eye coordination and the oboe helps with tonality , note control, rhythm, and of course the ability to read music which are all very important for a bass player.i played the trombone for a few years in school but i smashed it up pretty good beating some kid up with it for making fun of band nerds and the parents wouldn't buy me another one and the school refused to loan me one after that,so... that was the end of that. keep it up,

kirk7613 1 year ago
what else do you play (piano,keyboard,guitar,ect..). you have really good finger movement and i find it hard to believe you've only been playing since 3-09, unless you practice the scales a lot, just curious?
kirk7613 1 year ago
@kirk7613 Hey, thanks for your comment! I played piano for a couple of years about 11 years ago...didn't like taking lessons a whole lot. I liked just making up my own stuff much better! ;D
I've also been playing oboe for 9 years now...I'm sure that's helped me in some way or another!

Hey hey, i see you still hate playing open notes, great job but i think you missed a little bit of octave bars, oh well, great job as usual, please play open notes, you make me tired watching you play : D
ozzthorn258 1 year ago
@ozzthorn258 You caught me! : / I won't lie...open notes aren't always my favorite! I tabbed this song out myself, so I'm sure it's the farthest thing from the way it's actually supposed to be played, too! :P I did hit a couple of open notes in this cover, though! ahaha
Sometimes my open notes just sound out of tune...and if I adjust, everything else is out. Can't win. :P But I will try to use the opens more in the future! haha, thanks for your advice! :)
CrankUpTheAmps 1 year ago
@CrankUpTheAmps i know what you mean sounding outta tune, but you have to be careful note to let other strings ring out aswell, could be your problem, sometimes bass players use harmonix, pressing directly on the fret bar, not just before it, making cover attempts sound outta tune, it's a learned ear thing, but you got the skills so keep getting better, if you like i can run a tutorial on open note progressions if you like, just let me know : )
ozzthorn258 1 year ago
@CrankUpTheAmps I hate playing open notes also. That's so funny. It seems when I hit them I try to hard to stop them from ringing. LOL!
xOmumblesOx 1 year ago
@xOmumblesOx Yes! That's the other reason why I somewhat dislike the open notes! :P Maybe someday I'll actually know what I'm doing with my bass and I'll be able to tab and play things the easy way! :P
