I don't know about you, but when I was in Fargo and Bismarck Mandan last summer I was laughing at all the people with thick accents who kept insisting that they didn't have an accent (No I wasn't laughing directly at them-just to myself)
I thought the funniest thing she kept on saying was "about", lol. Very glaring accent in that word. That pronunciation stretches from North Dakota to Wisconsin.
yeah, i don't know what's funny lol but i am also from NoDak, so... lol People in Iowa make fun of the way I say "Bagel"... (Baygul) so it's probably the same thing lol
oh yes they do. Everyone from North Dakota that I know has a very strong distinctive accent. Listen to folks from Kansas City or Indianapolis, they have a neutral midwestern accent and newscasters based their accent on those two cities. if you think they sound southern, then YES YOU DO HAVE AN ACCENT
Actually some are as extreme. What's laughable is everyone in North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin insist they don't have an accent and are ready to dismiss others from "the deep south" of Omaha and Des Moines as sounding "southern" when in actuality those are considered the neutral accents (as well as those from Indianapolis and Kansas City) oh and if you think I'm from those areas I'm not I'm from the North East therefore I'm probably the most objective of all.
I was just in North Dakota and MInnesota back in August- I can truly say the accent is very strong-- even in the Twin Cities- I noticed a similar accent in South Dakota- it wasn't quite as strong but was still noticeable. In Iowa the accent moderates and becomes midwestern neutral. Even in the Kansas City area those with a drawl are acturally transplants from the Ozarks. Most locals have a a fairly neutral accent. I was also in Wichita Kansas where I noticed a subtle twang.

People in North Dakota have VERY STRONG accents compared to the rest of the country. You're just used to the accent because you live there.
