  • feel way more enlightened about these boxer engines. makes me want to get ballsy with my modification process to track the car :D

  • Wow you can drop gearbox out and back in a lot easier!

  • @saph4be

    If you have a lift yeah!!! I don't. I dropped a tranny once.....Never again WITHOUT a lift!!!

  • @HuckThis1971 ya most my subaru buddies can pull these in less than 2 hours. great vid man:)

  • thank you very much Sr!!

  • RAMMSTEIN

  • Excellent video sir! I am going to take a pass doing it myself lacking tools and a lift. But I learned a lot about my Forester. Thanks for taking the time and trouble to video the steps. Cheers

  • Huck great vid. Wish had something like this when i changed the clutch in my 85 gl back in the day. The easy way back then to split the motor and tranny was just to push on the clutch and everything just came apart, idk if this idea will work on the newer ones but just an idea to try i guess. also thumbs up on the Rammstein playing in the back ground :)

  • +1 fans stay on radiator

  • Good video Huck. If you wanted to save a few minutes and some knuckle skin, I believe you could have left the fans on the radiator. I'm never wrenched on a Forester, so I may be wrong, but I've pulled the radiator on the Impreza a few times to work on the timing belt assembly and I've never removed fans. Just disconnect hoses harness and supports. Not my idea. Check out Mikethemeatballs tbelt videos. I hope this doesn't come across as sharpshooting your technique. Just offering another approach.

  • @mg556linked

Nah!!! Don't feel offended at all. Everyone has there method of working. I just did it to show people. I just find it easier this way because depending on the car, the stupid rad fan gets stuck on the power steering pump.

  • @HuckThis1971

great video man! I'm not gonna attempt to do this myself because I don't have an engine hoist but you have a lot of good tips there for people like myself who will supervise the work done on my car. Thanks a lot!

  • Nice dude. You should title this also as a Subaru Engine Removal tutorial.

  • Thank you very, very much for making this video. You're really a very kind person for taking the time to document this. Are you in Canada? What part?

My 96 Legacy Outback has a very bad oil leak. A good mechanic told me that my main rear seal is leaking, and that it has gotten onto the clutch. He will replace the clutch kit and the rear main seal for about $825 (U.S.), parts and labor. Does that seem fair? I can't afford it (no job currently), but I need the car.

What do you charge for this?

  • Great vid thanks I know I can do this myself now

  • Ich tu dir Weh in the backgroun lol. good choice. great change too.

  • Fantastic video. I gotta do this to fix a bad rear oil seal. They had already done clutch job 40k miles ago... I

  • Amazing Vid! Like it. But seems too much complicated for novice like me :(

  • Great Video. Many thanks. I'm looking at a used Subaru that needs a clutch. I will be referring to this if I buy the car. Can you say how many hours it takes typically to do this job?

  • i talked to someone who, rather than lifting the engine up, suggested removing the k frame and lowering the engine and transmission down. What do you think about that? Does it sound like a good idea to you?

  • @paulybseven

Even more work. Pull the engine if you don't have a lift. If you have a lift, drop the tranny!!!

  • 25:53 lol Hmmm grease!!!!

  • You are the man! Burned up my clutch in an 03 impreza outback trying to follow a snow cat. I know...stupid. Replaced the clutch with no experience. You are a godsend.

  • @bearjibster Lifted the engine out with a tractor. Ran into one problem. Took a bolt out of the engine mount instead of the main nut. Took a day to figure that out. All in all 3 1/2 days. Keep track of your nuts. Thanks a million

  • Do you recommend pulling the engine more than doing the work in the car? I'm trying to find the most efficient way right now. AWESOME video, by the way!!!

  • When the last option is to take the engine out i start to cry lol. I always try pull just the tranny out

  • Why did you choose to pull the engine? Isn't it possible (and probably easier) to pull the transmission for a clutch job?

  • @nbietz

If I had a lift yes. I did a clutch job from removing the trans before. Jacked the car WAY up and was crawling under the car the hole time. Personally, there is more to remove getting the trans off than just pulling the engine.

  • wow what a job just to finally get to see the clutch.... nice vid man

  • Nice video
