A great songwriter who had the misfortune to be born in new jersey, so he spent most of his career making beautiful poetry about a state that is nothing but turnpikes, tolls, and douchebags.
wish i could take my great unlce to see this he use to bring his guitar to family dinners and looking back now i didn't realize how good he was till a seen an old home video the other day funny how you don't miss some things till there gone, maybe thats why everybody always tell younger people to appreciate things.
@estenis@estenis Actually, this song was written by Daniel Emmett, who led the Viriginia Minstrels, a white musical group, in the 1840s. Blackface minstrelsy involved "blacking" up one's face and acting out stock characters on stage, like Zip Coon and Jim Crow. It was INCREDIBLY racist, as the songs and lyrics were written from the perspectives of white people, creating characters that "played the fool" for the enjoyment and laughter of singularly white audiences.
why a racial under ton when you are black? iam a mix from black latino and white but the way i see it when the song is over a white old man it would be okay???
Um, Dan Tucker was NOT black, and actually, it was entirely likely that he owned slaves (who wrote the song). The song probably dates farther back than 1843. He ran a ferry across the Savannah river in Elbert county, was a reverend, and had been in the Virginia Milita during the Revolutionary war. He is my ancestor, actually, on my father's mother's side (She was Mewburn Tucker, married to Tom Tucker, Elbert County, GA.) Dan Tucker is buried in Elbert County off of Heardmont Road.
last time i saw him was in 1991 day 1 of may the worker day here in portugal since then no more time he play here but i dont lost my hope since spain is a little far but he goes there a lot of times he forgets the fans here at portugal is a shame
great artist and an old song. This song actually has a lot of negative racial under tons (dan tucker is black). its amazing now day how many sogs we know were written in the 20's 30's and 40's. this song dates back to 1843
Um, no, Dan Tucker was not black. He owned slaves, actually, and they are the ones that wrote the song. He's my ancestor. Buried in Elbert County, Georgia. Dad's mother was a Tucker. Dan Tucker born 1750, served in Virginia milita, moved to GA on land grant.
Old Dan Tucker" was written by slaves about a man named Daniel Tucker who lived in Elbert County, Georgia. Tucker was a farmer, ferryman, and minister who appears in records from the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Dan Tucker was my 6th Great Grandfather and was adored by black people for his kindness to them.

I think this version is even better than the one on the Seeger Sessions DVD in Dublin.
It's a shame there wasn't a huge crowd for this show. I'd go even if Bruce planned on singing the phone book!
