Dont forget Group C and IMSA GTP cars that raced in europe and america at the same time as Group A. Race car chassis with any powerful engine combo you could think of (big block chevy, 300zx turbo v6, V12 Jaguar, turbo porche flat 6, turbo buick/holden 3.8 v6, even turbocharged 4 cylinder ford cosworth and BMW M3 engines, ALL making atleast 700hp in race trim. names like TWR, NPTI, and ofcourse porche all dominated. by the end of it the Jag XJR14 had comparable laptimes to eurpoean F1 cars!
I was in the pits at Bathurst that year and the two Jags were BY FAR the loudest cars on the track. You'd be watching the TV and see them coming down Conrod and then into ;pit lane and then you'd get the roar from the actual car.

back in the days of group C, at bathurst, there were nissans, toyotas, volvos, even the V12 jags raced at bathurst 80, 81, 82, 83 & 84 and even they were no match for the mighty 308 commodores and the monster 351 falcons. holden and ford just raped everyone in the first half of the 80s at bathurst.
@2GoRightGoHolden Agree with you about Group C - great variety of makes and performance. I do recall Kevin Bartlett's Camaro using a Gemini for brakes one year... The occasional encounter with a flat bed truck trundling around the track was an added surprise bonus too.
This awesome video is a reminder of what aussie motorsport lost when local touring car racing shrivelled into its current v8 supercar format. The arseholes got what they wanted...
Whether you like the guy or not didn't that V12 sound awesome! What a car. I remember this race as a kid and i always liked the XJR's after seeing them at Bathurst.
No because he has stitched up many people in V8 racing Skaife, kelly racing, perkins.and anybody that has had dealings with him people don't speak up though.
I love the frantic hand movements over the last hump on Conrod... and was he wringing it's neck or what? The in car footage from the race loks like he's on a warm up lap by comparison...
I have seen one of the sister cars to this one recently. (Originally driven by Denny Hulme) It sounds terrible compared to this one. Alan Moffat was a great commentator, like Crompton is today, because he has done it and know what he's talking about.
Never liked Tom Wanker!! No one will ever forget the 1988 Saturday top ten run off. What a complete farce that was.....all thanks to one fuckin scottish!!!
Ah yes 1988, he protests the leading Sierras (excpet Eggenbergers hmmm....) His fragile british built car craps itself in 4 laps and the protest about the lead HSV car having an illegal steering rack and front wing was upheld(no dq seeing it had retired anyway) Sierras were cleared too!! Maybe Holden should have just stuck with the Polarizer!!
Duckin too right. Bloody Tom Wank came to Ozzie, got a little upset at how good Australian Sierras were built and had all of 'em impounded!! For the leading Shell DJR Sierras they were stripped into a million pieces on Friday evening. Found nothing wrong. Hastily cobbled up again, all the Oz Sierras were off the pace and of course the ANZ (non Australian) Sierra got the loot. Annyway you know the deal....am I still feeling a bit sore? U betcha!!!
Bigcat178, the commentator was Alan Moffat that said "Heres one Englishman" what can you expect from an American trying to call an Aussie race? I could never stand that big headed yank when he was racing let alone commentating.
Great to see the Jaguar showing just what they are capable of! All jaguars have "Grace space, and Pace...real sport saloons built with quality engineering real leather great handling too!
